Universities in Alicante: what to know before applying
Alicante is a university city with a well-established infrastructure for international students. It is home to one large public university and several private centers accredited by the Spanish Ministry of Education. For Russian-speaking applicants, the province is attractive for its mild climate, relatively low cost of living compared to Madrid and Barcelona, and a well-developed Russian-speaking community that eases the initial adjustment.

Major universities in the city
Universidad de Alicante (UA) — a public university founded in 1979, part of the Erasmus+ international exchange network. The campus is located in San Vicente del Raspeig, 7 km from the city centre. It offers more than 40 undergraduate programmes and 60+ postgraduate ones, with strong faculties in law, economics, tourism, IT, engineering, and Spanish philology.
CEU San Pablo Alicante — a regional campus of CEU University, private and Catholic. Specializations include business, law, and communications. Degrees are awarded by CEU Universidad and recognized across the EU.
Universidad Internacional de Valencia (VIU) — an online university with a local office presence; popular among working students and those seeking a Spanish degree without attending daily classes.
Comparison table of programs
| University | Field of study | Language of instruction | Cost/year | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Universidad de Alicante | Law, economics, tourism, IT | Spanish (some master’s programmes in English) | ~€800–1,400 (public rate) | The lowest tuition among public universities in Spain |
| Universidad de Alicante | International master’s programmes (English) | English | ~€2,000–3,500 | Quotas for international students are limited |
| CEU San Pablo Alicante | Business, law | Spanish | ~6,000–9,000 € | Private CEU degree, recognized in the EU |
| VIU (online, Valencia region) | MBA, education, psychology | Spanish | ~€3,500–6,000 | Suitable for students with a residence permit; no in-person attendance required |

Enrolling as a foreigner: a step-by-step approach
Step 1. Diploma recognition (homologación)
A Russian secondary school certificate must be homologated through Spain’s Ministry of Education. The procedure takes 6 to 18 months. An alternative is to sit the Spanish university entrance exam EBAU/EVAU (similar to the Russian EGE) as a foreign applicant: held once a year in June, covering several subjects in Spanish. The EVAU score determines the competitive grade (nota de corte) used for university admissions.
Step 2. Language requirements
For undergraduate programs in Spanish — DELE B2 at minimum; most UA programs expect DELE C1. For English-language master’s programs — IELTS 6.0–6.5 or TOEFL iBT 80+. The language certificate is submitted as part of the application package.
Step 3. Application deadlines
- Pre-registration in UA — March–April (for enrolment from September).
- Master’s programme applications — depends on the programme, usually February–May.
- It is best to submit documents for nostrification 12–15 months before your planned enrollment date.
Step 4. Student visa and residence permit
After enrolment, a national D-type visa (visado de estudios) is obtained from the Spanish consulate in your country of residence. Required documents: enrolment letter, proof of financial means (~€600–700 per month), health insurance, and a criminal record certificate. Upon arrival in Spain, you must apply for a TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) — a student residence permit — within 30 days.
Scholarships and financial support
- Becas MAEC-AECID — Spanish government scholarships for foreign nationals; highly competitive, applications submitted through the Spanish embassy.
- Becas Santander — private scholarships from Santander bank for UA students; cover part of tuition or mobility costs.
- Erasmus+ for incoming students — if you are already enrolled at a European university that is a UA partner, inbound mobility is available.
- Spanish Ministry of Education state scholarships for Russian nationals are virtually unavailable in 2024–2026 due to the suspension of several bilateral agreements; the situation should be verified with up-to-date sources.
Cost of living in Alicante for a student
- Room in a shared apartment: 350–500 € per month
- Student residence hall (residencia universitaria): €450–650 per month (meals included)
- Food + transport + other: €300–450/month
- Realistic total budget: 750–1 100 € per month — one of the lowest among Spanish university cities
Recognition of a Russian university degree for master’s programmes
If you are entering a UA master’s programme with a Russian bachelor’s or specialist degree, the procedure is called reconocimiento de título extranjero. The university assesses equivalency independently; the Ministerio de Educación is not required in this case. Processing time is 1–3 months. Documents must be translated by a sworn translator (traductor jurado) certified in Spain, with an apostille on the originals.
Common mistakes
-
Delaying diploma recognition (nostrification). The process takes up to 18 months. Applicants who begin it in the same year they plan to enrol will inevitably lose one academic year.
-
Confusing homologación with reconocimiento. Homologación means equating a foreign qualification to the Spanish standard through the Ministry. Reconocimiento is recognition by a specific university for admission to a specific programme. These are different procedures with different timelines and authorities.
-
Overestimating your Spanish level. DELE B2 is the real minimum, but classroom instruction at UA moves at C1 pace. Students who arrive with B2 often spend their first semester just catching up to the lecture speed.
-
Ignoring the nota de corte. Cut-off scores for popular programs (medicine, law, ADE) are consistently high. Submitting an application without first calculating your own EVAU rating score is one of the most common reasons for rejection.
-
**Purchasing minimum-coverage insurance. Consulates accept policies with coverage from €30,000, but some insurers offer ’student’ policies with exclusions that fail verification. Read the policy terms carefully — not just the coverage amount.
-
Overlooking student residence permit restrictions. A student residence permit in Spain allows you to work no more than 30 hours per week and only with the appropriate authorization. It does not automatically convert to a work permit after graduation — a separate application is required.
