Schools and children in Alicante

Children and schools in Alicante: what options are available to Russian-speaking families, how much it costs and how to apply.

Children’s education in Alicante: state schools, private options, and the reality for Russian-speaking children

Choosing a school is one of the first decisions families make when moving to Alicante. It affects not only the quality of a child’s education but also how quickly they adapt, your daily commute, and your monthly budget. Spain’s education system has three tiers and seems straightforward at first glance — but for Russian-speaking parents it contains several far-from-obvious forks in the road.

How the school education system works in Alicante

The Spanish school system is divided into three types:

  • Públicas (public) — free of charge, with instruction in Spanish and partly in Valencian. Quality varies by neighborhood.
  • Concertadas (semi-public schools) — partially state-funded, usually run by Catholic or secular non-profits. Cost: 200–400 €/month, including fees and extracurricular activities.
  • Privadas (private) — fully fee-paying, often with bilingual programs (Spanish + English). Fees run €400–600/month and above.

State school enrolment is handled through the Alicante City Council (Ayuntamiento de Alicante) or the GVA portal (Generalitat Valenciana). The key period is March–April before the academic year. Enrolment takes local registration (empadronamiento) into account: the closer the school to your address, the higher your priority. Without empadronamiento, enrolment is effectively impossible.

The academic year starts in September and ends in June. Summer camps and after-school care (comedor escolar) are billed separately — on average €80–150/month.

Kindergartens in Alicante: guardería and escuela infantil

Early childhood education in Spain is divided into two cycles: 0–3 years (guardería) and 3–6 years (escuela infantil, part of the formal education system). The second cycle is free in state nurseries, but places are in critically short supply.

State nursery places for children under 3 are a scarce resource. Waiting lists reset each year, with priority given to families with local registration and low income. In practice, most newly arrived families end up in private guarderías — costing from 300 €/month for a half-day to 500–700 €/month for a full day with meals.

Insider insight: Alicante offers municipal subsidies toward private nursery fees for families with a residence permit. Applications are submitted through Servicios Sociales (the municipal social services office). Many newly arrived families are unaware of this and end up overpaying for a year or two.

Russian school in Alicante and support for Russian-speaking children

Russian-language schools of the kind familiar from Russia or Ukraine do not exist in Alicante — neither accredited nor officially operating ones. The options that do exist:

  • Saturday circles and Sunday schools — informal groups within Russian-speaking communities. Sessions are irregular; the programme depends on volunteers.
  • Online tutors in Russian language, mathematics in Russian, and Ukrainian — the most popular support tool. Average rate: 15–30 €/hour for a specialist from Spain or Eastern Europe.
  • Distance schools with Russian or Ukrainian accreditation — some families run their child through both a Spanish school and an online school in parallel, to preserve the curriculum and documentation. This is legal, but requires discipline from both child and parent.

Ukrainian children have had the right to free enrollment in state schools with additional language support since 2022 (the PROA+ program). In practice, the availability of that support varies by school.

Common mistakes

  1. Late empadronamiento registration. Without registration you have no school priority. Families who put it off until summer risk not getting into the school nearest their home.

  2. Counting solely on a state nursery. Places at Alicante’s municipal guarderías are taken in April–May. Arriving in June or July and expecting a free spot in September, a family will almost certainly be out of luck.

  3. Ignoring Valencian. Some subjects in Alicante state schools are taught in Valencian. Children adapt quickly, but parents often cannot help with homework — something worth bearing in mind.

  4. Looking for a ’Russian school’ as a standalone institution. Parents lose time waiting to find a familiar format that simply does not exist. The right approach from the start is a combined model: a Spanish school plus online support in Russian.

  5. Underestimating the hidden costs of state school. A formally free school still requires payment for: uniform, textbooks (not always covered), comedor, after-school care, field trips, insurance — real costs add up to €50–150/month.

  6. Arriving without any language preparation. Children with no basic Spanish find themselves in complete linguistic isolation for the first few months. Even 2–3 months of online lessons before the move can dramatically change the adaptation experience.

What to choose and for whom

For most families with school-age children settling in Alicante long-term, the optimal strategy is a state or concertada school combined with an online tutor in the native language once or twice a week. This delivers linguistic integration without losing the cultural and academic foundation.

Families with a high budget and a short horizon (1–2 years) should consider bilingual private schools — adaptation through English happens faster there, and the transition to the next country will be less painful.

The key step after relocating is empadronamiento in the first few weeks. Everything else builds on it.

School in Alicante starts with the neighbourhood

The neighbourhood where you rent will determine your school: in some areas a place at a state school is assigned directly tied to the registered address; in some cases it all comes down to the morning commute. We’ll find housing with an eye on to the school and will prepare your child’s documents from Russia, Belarus, or Ukraine — with apostille and sworn translation. Both take weeks, and application windows are short.
