Banks and transfers in Alicante

Finances in Alicante: where to open an account, which banks are foreigner-friendly, and how to transfer money across borders.

Banks in Alicante for foreigners: how to open an account and where to transfer money

Banking is one of the first things to sort out after moving — and it is precisely where most relocators lose time and money. Alicante is not Madrid or Barcelona: there are fewer international branches, but local banking culture is stronger and attitudes toward foreign clients, who have always been numerous here, are more relaxed. To open an account in Alicante you need to understand which bank suits your situation, what documents will be required, and how transfers from Alicante work to countries with limited SWIFT access.

What a non-resident needs to open an account in Alicante

The standard document set applies across all of Spain:

  • **Passport (valid)
  • NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) — without it, opening an account is virtually impossible
  • Proof of residential address in Spain (lease agreement, padrón extract)
  • Proof of income source — especially relevant for those transferring large sums

The NIE can be obtained at the Alicante National Police headquarters (Comisaría de Policía Nacional, Calle Músico Mahiques) or through an authorised gestor'а. Registration through the official portal can sometimes stretch over several weeks — experienced relocators hire a gestor for €50–100 and resolve the matter faster.

Non-resident account (cuenta de no residente) — a separate format: opened before obtaining a residence permit, limited in functionality, but allows receiving and sending transfers and paying rent and utilities. Once you receive your residence permit, switch to the resident account type.

Which bank to choose: a comparison of options

Banco Sabadell has historically been the most welcoming bank for foreign clients in the Valencia region — its headquarters are in Catalonia, but it has a strong presence along the coast. It tends to ask fewer questions and has English-speaking managers at several of its Alicante branches.

CaixaBank — Spain’s largest bank by customer base. The most extensive ATM network in the country, a solid mobile app, but compliance is stricter: they may request a comprehensive package of documents on the source of funds.

BBVA is popular among digital nomads for its modern app and the ability to open a basic account online (for residents). Non-residents must visit a branch in person.

Bankinter — a niche option for those holding assets or planning investments. Service is premium-tier, with a higher entry threshold.

Transfers from Alicante: SWIFT, Wise, and alternatives

Since 2022, SWIFT transfers to Russia from Spanish banks have been effectively blocked — Spanish banks do not work with sanctioned Russian correspondents. The situation for Ukraine and Belarus is different: transfers within SEPA work correctly; transfers to Ukraine via SWIFT are restricted but possible through certain European intermediaries.

Workable arrangements for 2026:

  • Wise — available in Spain, with transfers to most EU countries, the UK, the US, and a number of other destinations. Transfers to Russia are not supported. The Wise card works well as an everyday card in Alicante for Russian speakers: accepted everywhere, low conversion fees.
  • Western Union — offices are available in Alicante (including at CaixaBank branches and some exchange points). Transfers to Russia are formally possible through certain corridors, but limits and conditions change — verify the current situation before sending.
  • Crypto exchanges — several P2P services and small exchange points operate in Alicante. Transactions are conducted via USDT/BTC, then converted to rubles or hryvnias through local counterparties. The scheme works, but requires a basic understanding of compliance: a bank may block an account if large sums regularly arrive from crypto exchanges without explanation.
  • Revolut — card and account opened online, useful as an interim tool. It holds a banking licence in Spain, which adds an extra layer of reliability.

Insider nuance: Spanish banks are increasingly asking for explanations when receiving incoming transfers of €3,000–5,000+ from outside the EU. Keep a contract, invoice, or other supporting document on hand — it will save considerable stress when the first large payment arrives.

Common mistakes

  1. Going to the bank without your NIE. Opening an account is virtually impossible without one — don’t waste time negotiating with a manager; get your NIE first.
  2. Choosing a bank by proximity to home rather than by compliance policy. If you receive transfers from non-standard sources, it is worth clarifying the bank’s position in advance — otherwise you risk having your account frozen.
  3. Relying solely on SWIFT for transfers to Russia. Since 2022 this route has not worked for most Spanish banks. A backup tool needs to be in place before you move.
  4. Ignoring account maintenance fees for non-residents. These can reach €10–15 per month. When comparing banks, look at the terms for non-residents specifically, not the promotional rates advertised to EU citizens.
  5. Opening just one account. Experience shows that having a local bank account plus a Wise or Revolut card is the minimum workable setup. Any single tool can let you down at the worst possible moment.
  6. Using a personal account for business transactions. Spanish banks monitor account activity closely — regular incoming transfers that resemble commercial activity can trigger a request for explanations or result in account closure.

Practical takeaway

For most people relocating to Alicante, the optimal setup looks like this: Banco Sabadell or CaixaBank as the primary Spanish account for rent, utilities, and everyday spending — plus Wise or Revolut for international transfers and currency conversion. If you work remotely and earn in euros, that is sufficient. If you need to send money to Russia — set up a crypto route in advance or use Western Union; do not rely on SWIFT bank transfers.
