The job market and business environment in Alicante

Alicante is not Madrid or Barcelona, and that distinction matters enormously before you relocate. The local job market is considerably narrower, average salaries are lower than in the capital, and most Russian speakers who work here successfully have either brought their employer with them or carved out a niche in the economy serving the Russian-speaking and international community. Since 2022, competition for the limited positions requiring Russian has grown noticeably — the market felt the influx of several thousand new arrivals.

What jobs you can realistically find in Alicante

When talking about working in Alicante for Russians, it is worth honestly separating two markets: the local Spanish one and the diaspora one.

The local market requires confident Spanish (B2–C1) and, in most cases, an already-issued residence permit with the right to work. Without this, reaching an offer is difficult: employers will not wait while you process an autorización de trabajo. The most realistic directions:

  • Tourism and hospitality — seasonal positions from April through October, rate from €1,100–1,300 gross
  • The restaurant sector — kitchen staff, waitstaff at seaside venues; some employers overlook limited Spanish if you speak English
  • Construction and real estate — Alicante is building actively; there is demand for site managers and technical specialists familiar with European standards

The ’diaspora’ market — here Russian speakers work with Russian speakers. In consistent demand:

  • Realtors with knowledge of Russian and English represent the most active niche — buyers from Russia, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan consistently seek property on the Costa Blanca
  • Remote IT specialists — working for foreign employers while living in Alicante; the city draws them with its prices and climate alongside a European quality of life
  • Translators, lawyers, accountants for a Russian-speaking audience — a small but steady demand

The average salary in the region is 1,400–1,800 € net. For comparison, similar roles in Madrid pay 1,800–2,400 €. The gap is significant and worth factoring into your budget planning.

Remote work and Digital Nomad Visa

If you work for a foreign employer or run independent projects — Spain’s digital nomad visa (Visa para Nómadas Digitales, introduced in 2023) puts your situation on solid legal footing. Requirements: income of at least 200% of Spain’s minimum wage (SMI) (approximately €2,600–2,800 per month for 2025–2026), a contract or client base outside Spain, and at least one year of proven work experience.

An alternative — the Non-Lucrative Visa: suitable for those living on passive income, dividends, or savings. The downside: it officially prohibits any active commercial activity on Spanish territory.

Insider tip: some expats have spent years operating in a ’grey zone’ — living on a Non-Lucrative visa while receiving income into a foreign account. Spain’s tax authority (Agencia Tributaria) significantly stepped up checks on freelance residents in 2024–2025. The risk of fines and loss of residence permit is now real, not hypothetical.

How to start a business in Alicante

Starting a business in Alicante is entirely possible, though bureaucratically slow. Main formats:

Autónomo (sole trader) — the most common structure for small businesses and freelancers. Registered with the Agencia Tributaria and Seguridad Social. The social contribution for new autónomos in the first year is €80 per month (the reduced ’tarifa plana’ rate), after which it depends on income (the Cuota RETA system). The key pain point: contributions are due even in loss-making months.

S.L. (Sociedad Limitada, equivalent to an LLC) — requires share capital of at least €3,000 (a 2023 reform lowered the legal minimum from €3,000 to €1, but in practice notaries and banks are more comfortable with real capital). Incorporation takes 4–8 weeks, including the notary, the commercial register, and opening a bank account.

StructureBest suited forStart-up costsKey detail
AutónomoFreelancer, consultant, estate agent~400–600 € (registration + accountant)Personal liability for debts
S.L.Small business, team, investors€1,500–3,000 (notary + register)Double taxation when distributing dividends
Sucursal (branch of a foreign company)Companies with operations outside Spain€2,000–4,000Complex accounting, legal counsel required

Prices in the table are market reference points: government fees and third-party rates at the time of publication. These are not SVOY prices — our service fees are provided on request and in the ’Services’ section.

Popular business niches in Alicante: real estate agencies, cafés and restaurants, tourism services, beauty services, online schools, and consultancy for the diaspora. Restaurants and cafés are highly competitive and seasonal: May–October revenue must cover all 12 months.

Common mistakes

  1. Arriving without a residence permit that includes work rights and expecting to find an office job. Spanish employers will not sponsor your work permit — that option is reserved almost exclusively for top-tier specialists under a quota.

  2. Underestimating competition in the ’Russian-speaking’ market. Since 2022, the number of estate agents, accountants, and translators offering Russian-language services in Alicante has multiplied. The only way through is a narrow specialisation or a strong reputation.

  3. Registering as Autónomo and forgetting about contributions during a loss-making month. Seguridad Social accrues the debt automatically. Outstanding contribution debts block residence permit renewals.

  4. Working for a foreign employer under a Non-Lucrative residence permit and thinking it’s safe. The Agencia Tributaria can see incoming transactions. The risk is a fine and cancellation of your status.

  5. Opening a restaurant or café without accounting for seasonality. From November through February, foot traffic in tourist areas drops by 60–80%. Any business plan must factor this in.

  6. Expecting European-level salaries. Alicante is a region where wages fall below the Spanish average. 1,400–1,800 € net is the realistic ceiling for most non-managerial positions.

What to choose and for whom

If you already have a stable income from abroad, the Digital Nomad Visa resolves the question legally and comfortably. If you plan to build a business locally, setting up as Autónomo with a good local accountant (gestor) is faster and cheaper than forming an S.L. at the outset. Finding salaried employment in the local market is realistic only with solid Spanish and a valid residence permit — it is worth searching for jobs in Alicante on InfoJobs, Indeed.es, and LinkedIn in parallel with your paperwork, not after.
