Russian speakers in Alicante
Sunny coast, affordable living, and a large Russian-speaking diaspora
Life in Alicante — through the eyes of those already here
People come here for the mild climate, a relatively low cost of living compared to other European destinations, and a strong Russian-speaking community that took root in the 2000s. After 2022, the flow of relocators from Russia, Ukraine and Belarus grew noticeably — the city welcomed several thousand new residents. Alicante attracts digital nomads, families with children, retirees, and those purchasing property for a residence permit.

Where fellow expats settle — and where it’s best to avoid
Where to live
- Playa de San JuanThe best neighbourhood for families: a long beach, supermarkets, Russian-speaking neighbours, and new housing stock. Rent is above average, but the infrastructure justifies it.
- Ensanche / CentroCentral location with cafés, markets, and good transport links. Ideal for singles and couples without a car; much of the housing stock is older buildings.
- Cabo de las HuertasA quiet, prestigious seaside neighbourhood of villas and townhouses. For those who want peace and are willing to pay for it.
- BenalúaA residential working neighborhood close to the center: cheaper and quieter than the tourist areas, great for long-term budget rentals.
Where it’s better not to live
- Zona del Puerto (nightlife area)Noisy nightlife bars and tourist crowds in summer make it uncomfortable for long-term living, especially with children.
- Carolinas BajasDense construction, a socially mixed neighbourhood, and occasional mentions in crime reports.

Housing and neighbourhoods
1-bedroom rental in the centre — 700–950 €/month; by the sea in Playa de San Juan — 900–1,300 €/month; 2-bedroom in residential neighbourhoods — 800–1,100 €. The market is tight: demand exceeds supply, deposit is typically 2 months plus insurance. Search on Idealista, Fotocasa, and in Russian-speaking Telegram groups for Alicante. Landlords often require a Spanish NIE and proof of income.

Documents and status
The first step is the NIE (foreigner identification number) — nothing is possible without it. Next comes the padrón (address registration) at your local municipality. Main residence statuses: investor residence permit (golden visa, threshold — €500,000 in real estate, programme frozen since 2024), residence permit without the right to work (at least €2,400/month in passive income), digital nomad visa, and family reunification. Russian documents require an apostille and a certified translation.
Steps to take →
Banking and money
The main banks are CaixaBank, Sabadell, BBVA, and Bankinter. Non-residents can open an account with a passport and NIE; additional proof of income source is sometimes required. SWIFT transfers to Russia have been restricted since 2022 — crypto exchanges, Wise (where available), and Western Union are used instead. Banco Sabadell has historically been welcoming to foreigners.

Work and business
In demand: IT specialists (remote), real estate agents fluent in Russian and English, tourism and hospitality. Employed work requires a work permit (autorización de trabajo) as part of the residence permit. Freelance and remote work for a foreign employer — through the Digital Nomad Visa or a residence permit without the right to work, provided income is sufficient. Average regional salary: 1,400–1,800 € net.
Where to look for work →
Healthcare
Public healthcare is available with a tarjeta sanitaria (health card), issued after padrón registration. Private clinics are widely available: consultations from 40–80 €. There are few Russian-speaking doctors, but Russian-speaking medical intermediaries do exist. Recommended insurers: Adeslas, Sanitas, or Asisa — from 60–120 €/month depending on age.

Schools and children
Public schools are free, with instruction in Spanish and partly in Valencian. Private and semi-state schools (concertadas) — €200–600/month. Full-format Russian-language schools are not available, but Saturday classes and online tutors exist. Private daycares (guarderías) — from €300/month; state-run spots are scarce. Enrolment is handled through the municipality.

Transport and cars
The city has a good TRAM bus network and suburban rail (RENFE Cercanías). A single bus/tram ticket costs 1.45 €; a monthly pass is around 35–45 €. A car is useful for trips outside the city and to suburban areas. Russian driving licenses are valid until they expire — to exchange them for a Spanish license you need a residence permit and must pass a local test (theory and practical); there is no reciprocal agreement with Russia.

Transfers and parcels
There have been no direct Alicante–Moscow flights since 2022. Services operate via Istanbul (Turkish Airlines, Pegasus), Dubai, Belgrade, or Yerevan — from €300–700 one way. Parcels to Russia — via Serbia, UAE, or Armenia: CDEK International, Boxberry (routes change — verify current options). Money transfers — via crypto exchanges, Koronapay (with restrictions), or cash via trusted couriers.

Questions about life in Alicante
Can you open an account at a Spanish bank without a residence permit?
+
Yes, a non-resident account (cuenta de no residente) can be opened with a passport and NIE. However, some banks have tightened their approach since 2022 — they may request proof of income or decline Russian citizens. Sabadell and smaller cooperative banks tend to be more accommodating.
How to get an NIE in Alicante and how long does it take?
+
NIE is issued by the Oficina de Extranjería or the police. Appointments are booked at sede.gob.es; queues can run 4–8 weeks ahead. Going through a gestor (intermediary) is faster and costs 100–200 €. Once you have an appointment, the process itself takes 1 day.
Is Alicante a good fit for a family with children?
+
Yes: a safe city with good infrastructure for families, beaches, and parks. Public schools are free, and children pick up Spanish fast. The downside — there is no Russian-language school, so parents often hire Russian tutors.
What is the minimum income required for a residence permit without the right to work?
+
In 2025–2026, the requirement is at least 400% of IPREM per applicant — around €2,400 net per month — plus 100% of IPREM for each dependent (~€600). Income must be supported by documentation: bank statements, pension, dividends, or rental income.
Is Alicante safe to live in, and what is the crime rate?
+
Alicante is a relatively safe city by European standards. The main risks are pickpocketing in tourist areas during summer. The Playa de San Juan, Cabo de las Huertas, and Benalúa neighbourhoods are considered calm. Serious crime is uncommon in the tourist part of the city.
