Russian speakers in Marbella
2026 guide for expats: life, work, and paperwork on the Costa del Sol
Life in Marbella — through the eyes of those already here
Russian speakers come to Marbella for the Mediterranean climate, safety, and the opportunity to gain legal status through the golden visa or digital nomad visa. One of the largest Russian-speaking communities in Spain has taken shape here, with its own infrastructure ranging from Russian kindergartens to law firms. The city has been attracting affluent people from the post-Soviet world for 30 years, meaning the level of adaptation and understanding among local businesses is high.

Where fellow expats settle — and where it’s best to avoid
Where to live
- Puerto BanúsPrestigious marina district with luxury real estate, restaurants and Russian-speaking neighbours. Ideal for those who want everything within reach and walking distance to the sea.
- Sierra Blanca / NagüelesQuiet hills above the city, sea-view villas, high security. A favourite with families and those who value privacy.
- Nueva Andalucía (Valle Romano)A happy medium: golf courses, apartments cheaper than in Banús, and good transport links. Popular among the middle class from the CIS.
- Old Town (Casco Antiguo)Authentic Marbella: pedestrian streets, proximity to the centre, real atmosphere. Ideal for those who want to integrate into Spanish life rather than live in a gated complex.
Where it’s better not to live
- Las Chapas — eastern MarbellaFar from amenities, poor transport links without a car. Not practical for a family with children and no vehicle.
- Periphery of San Pedro — industrial zoneThe industrial quarters along the N-340 highway are noisy, with poor air quality and minimal pedestrian infrastructure.

Housing and neighbourhoods
2-bedroom apartment rental — €1,500 to €3,500/month depending on the area; Puerto Banús and Sierra Blanca — from €2,500. Long-term villa rentals — from €4,000/month and up. Search on Idealista, Fotocasa, and through Russian-speaking agencies (there are dozens in Banús). Short-term rates rise sharply in summer; long-term contracts (12+ months) typically offer a 15–25% discount.

Documents and status
The first step is the NIE (foreigner identification number), obtained at the Comisaría de Policía Marbella or through a consulate. Next comes empadronamiento (address registration). Residence options: golden visa when purchasing property from €500,000; digital nomad visa with income from €2,646/month (2026); standard residence permit on various grounds. All processes go through your NIE and gestorías (local legal assistants).
Steps to take →
Banking and money
With a NIE, you can open an account at Sabadell, BBVA, Bankinter, or CaixaBank — you will need your NIE, passport, and proof of address. Some banks (notably Bankinter Private) are accommodating toward wealthy non-residents. Transfers from Russia currently only work through indirect routes (crypto exchange, third countries); SWIFT from Russia to Spain is restricted.

Work and business
As a tourist-driven city, Marbella offers realistic job opportunities in hospitality, real estate, yachting, and luxury retail. Employment requires a NIE and a work permit (granted automatically with a residence permit). The digital nomad visa allows you to work remotely for a foreign employer legally. The local job market is competitive and salaries are lower than in Madrid.
Where to look for work →
Healthcare
Public healthcare (SAS, Andalucía) is available with a residence permit and padrón registration. Private clinics — HM Marbella, Hospiten, USP — accept Sanitas, Adeslas, and Asisa insurance. Russian-speaking doctors and interpreters are available at private clinics and through listings in Russian-speaking community groups. Emergency services: 112.

Schools and children
International schools: Aloha College (English, IB), Swans International School, Las Chapas (British curriculum). Fees — from €500 to €1,500/month. Russian-language kindergartens and supplementary education are available through communities (VKontakte, Telegram). State schools are free but taught entirely in Spanish.
How to enrol a child →
Transport and cars
Having your own car is almost essential — public transport is limited. The nearest airport is Málaga (AGP), 40 minutes away. Russian driving licences are valid for 6 months from the date you receive residency, after which you must exchange them for a Spanish licence by passing an exam. Uber is barely functional — the main options are Cabify and local taxi services.

Transfers and parcels
There have been no direct Málaga–Moscow flights since 2022; connections run via Istanbul (Turkish Airlines), Dubai, Belgrade, or Yerevan — with 6–12 hours of travel time. Parcels to Russia — via CDEK (with restrictions), EMS, and private couriers through third countries. Money transfers — Western Union (partially), cryptocurrency, and intermediaries.

Questions about life in Marbella
Can you buy property in Marbella without a residence permit?
+
Yes, a foreigner without a residence permit can purchase property — only a NIE is required. Purchases of €500,000 or more qualify for a golden visa and residency for the entire family.
What is the minimum budget for relocating to Marbella?
+
A realistic starting budget — from €3,000–4,000/month for a couple: rent €1,800–2,500 + car rental + food + insurance. Without owned property and a car, living here is expensive.
Is Spanish necessary for daily life in Marbella?
+
In Puerto Banús and tourist areas, you can get by with English and even Russian. But for government offices, public healthcare, and everyday interactions, Spanish is a significant advantage.
How do you register a sole proprietorship or company in Spain from Marbella?
+
Self-employed status (autónomo) is registered through the Agencia Tributaria with a valid NIE and residence permit. Social security contributions start from €80/month in the early years (Tarifa Plana rate for new registrants). An SL (equivalent to an LLC) is set up through a notary, with a minimum share capital of €3,000.
Is Marbella safe to live in?
+
Marbella is one of the safest cities in Spain. Petty theft does occur in tourist areas during summer, but serious crime rates are very low. Gated urbanizaciones with security are a popular choice for families.
