Banks and transfers in Marbella
Finances in Marbella: where to open an account, which banks are foreigner-friendly, and how to transfer money across borders.
Banks in Marbella for foreigners: what to know before relocating
A bank account in Spain is not optional — it is a basic necessity. Without one you cannot rent a flat, get utilities connected, set up internet, or complete a property transaction. The sooner you resolve this, the fewer obstacles you will face in the first few months. And opening an account in Marbella as a foreigner is entirely possible — but with nuances that depend heavily on your status.

Opening a bank account in Marbella: requirements and what to expect
All Spanish banks operate within the EU’s AML/KYC compliance framework, and requirements for non-residents have tightened since 2022. That said, experience shows that opening an account is possible if your documents are in order.
Standard document package:
- International passport
- NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) — the key identifier for foreign nationals in Spain
- Proof of address in Spain (contrato de alquiler, utility bill, or letter from the property owner)
- Proof of income source — especially if you are a non-resident or opening an account with a large initial deposit
NIE is obtained at the Marbella police station (Comisaría de Marbella, Calle La Jara) or through the consulate before entering the country. Appointments are booked through the Policía Nacional system; average waiting time is 2–4 weeks.
Insider tip: some branches allow you to open a non-resident account (cuenta para no residentes) — without a Spanish address, using only your passport and a foreign address. It’s a temporary solution with limited functionality, but it gives you access to an IBAN for initial transactions.
Marbella banks for foreigners: a comparison of options
| Bank | Best for | Minimum deposit / fees | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sabadell | Families, employed professionals, investors | From 0 EUR; ~€10/month maintenance fee with a low balance | Strong branch network in Marbella; Russian-speaking managers available at select branches |
| BBVA | Broad profile, digital users | From 0 EUR; strong mobile app | Online opening for residents; non-residents must visit a branch |
| CaixaBank | Property buyers, mortgage seekers | From 0 EUR; mortgage — from 3.5% (2025–2026) | Spain’s largest bank; stable, but more bureaucratic |
| Bankinter / Bankinter Private | Wealthy non-residents, investors | Private from ~500,000 EUR AUM | Most accommodating for complex profiles; personal manager |
| N26 / Wise (not banks) | Digital nomads, transitional stage | 0–8 EUR/month | Cannot replace a Spanish IBAN for mortgages or rent, but useful as a bridge solution |
Bankinter Private deserves a special mention: it is one of the few Spanish banks where compliance officers are genuinely prepared to work with high-net-worth clients from CIS countries, provided the asset history is clean. Here, decisions are made by a personal manager, not an algorithm.

Transfers to Marbella: the real picture for 2025–2026
SWIFT transfers from Russia to Spain have been effectively unavailable for most Russian banks since 2022. The direct route is closed. Alternatives actually used by Russian speakers in Marbella:
Via third countries. Transfers through Armenia, Kazakhstan, the UAE, or Georgia are the most common route. Funds are accumulated in an account in an intermediate jurisdiction (for example, Kapital Bank in Azerbaijan or TBC Bank in Georgia), then sent by SWIFT to Spain. Route fees range from 1.5% to 4% depending on the amount and banks involved.
Crypto exchange. Works steadily via P2P platforms and OTC exchanges. In Marbella there are operators working with USDT/USDC → EUR. Important: your Spanish bank will see an incoming transfer from an exchange and may request an explanation of the source. Without a written explanation and documentation of the transaction chain, the transfer may be frozen.
Wise and similar services — work correctly if you already hold an account in a European jurisdiction (non-Russian). As a transfer route from Russia — not an option.
Insider insight: Spanish banks are particularly sensitive to large incoming transfers from non-residents from "high-risk" jurisdictions. Transfers of EUR 10,000 and above will almost certainly trigger an AML verification request. Have your documents ready: sale and purchase agreement, source-of-funds declaration, asset history. This is not a problem — it is standard procedure, and you need to be prepared for it in advance.
Common mistakes
-
Opening an account without a NIE. Some banks accept a passport alone — but this gives you a temporary non-resident account with restrictions. Without a NIE you cannot complete a property transaction or set up most services.
-
Walking into the first bank you find. Branches of the same bank in Marbella can behave very differently. The Sabadell branch on Avenida Ricardo Soriano and the one in Puerto Banús vary considerably in their willingness to work with non-residents — call ahead or visit several in person.
-
Transferring large sums without preparing supporting documents. A €50,000 incoming transfer without accompanying paperwork is an almost guaranteed freeze and a lengthy back-and-forth with compliance.
-
Relying on Wise as your main account. Wise is not a Spanish bank, and its IBAN is not accepted for home rentals, mortgages, or a range of government payments.
-
Ignoring the non-resident tax (IRNR). If you are a non-resident with a Spanish bank account and Spanish property, you have tax obligations in Spain even if you do not live there full time. Your bank will not warn you.
-
Confusing NIE with TIE. NIE is an identification number (issued quickly). TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) is the physical resident card. Banks require your NIE number, not the TIE card — but the branch manager sometimes gets confused too.
Who should choose what
If you are relocating for the long term and have already received your NIE — start with Sabadell or CaixaBank: broad branch network, straightforward online banking, and a relatively simple onboarding process. If you are a high-net-worth investor with assets from €500,000 — Bankinter Private will save you considerable stress through its personalised service. For the transitional period while your documents are still being processed, Wise will handle basic payment needs within the EU.
The question of transfers from Russia is resolved on a case-by-case basis: routing via a third country works, but requires careful documentation of every step.
