The Marbella job market: what to understand before you move
Marbella is not an economic hub but a tourist and luxury-residential destination. This shapes everything: the structure of the labour market, wage levels, and real opportunities for those arriving from the CIS. Finding salaried work here or starting a business is possible, but the strategy must be built differently from Madrid or Barcelona. Understanding seasonality, the required documents, and the local competitive landscape saves months and money.

What work is realistically available in Marbella
The city’s economy rests on four pillars: tourism and hospitality, real estate, yachting, and luxury retail. These are where Marbella’s vacancies are concentrated, and where you should look first.
Hospitality and F&B. Five-star hotels — Puente Romano, Marbella Club, NOBU Hotel — hire staff from May through October. Waiters, animators, receptionists, sous-chefs. English is essential; Spanish is a serious competitive advantage. Line-staff salaries run €1,400–1,800 gross per month, plus tips (a meaningful amount in luxury venues).
Real estate. This is the second most accessible sector for Russian speakers. Estate agencies — from boutique firms to major international names (Lucas Fox, Engel & Völkers) — are constantly looking for people with Russian, English, and Spanish. The commission model: a fixed base of €800–1,200 plus a percentage of the deal. A well-performing agent can earn €4,000–6,000 a month in peak season.
Yachting. Puerto Banús is one of the most expensive yacht marinas in Europe. Captains, stewards, and deckhands with RYA/STCW certificates are in demand here. It is a specialised market, but for those with the right credentials it is a genuine entry point into a well-paid niche.
Digital and remote work. Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa (Visa Digital Nomad) allows you to live in Marbella legally and work for a foreign employer. The minimum income required is €2,849/month (200% of the SMI — Spain’s minimum wage; 2026 threshold). This is a legitimate and increasingly popular path for developers, marketers, and consultants from the CIS.
Salaries in Marbella: realistic expectations
Salaries in Marbella are noticeably lower than in Madrid — an important fact to know in advance. The minimum wage in Spain in 2025–2026 is around €1,134 gross/month (14 payments per year). Most positions in tourism and hospitality fall in the €1,300–2,000 gross range.
| Sector | Position | Gross salary/month | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hospitality | Waiter, receptionist | €1,400–1,800 | Seasonal contract, tips |
| Real estate | Agent | €800–1,200 + % | Spanish and a network required |
| Yachting | Steward | €2,000–3,500 | STCW certificates required |
| Luxury retail | Sales consultant | €1,500–2,000 | Russian language is an advantage |
| Digital Nomad | Remote employee | Under contract | Visa Digital Nomad required |
| Management | Hotel Manager/GM | €3,000–5,000 | 5+ years experience + Spanish |

How to start a business in Marbella
**Opening a business in Marbella is entirely realistic, and the local environment is well set up for it. The city’s Russian-speaking infrastructure — law firms, accounting offices, business associations — understands the specific needs of clients from the CIS.
Autónomo (sole trader). The simplest structure. Registration via a notary or online; social fund contributions are €80/month in the first year (the reduced ’tarifa plana’ rate), then based on actual income. Suitable for freelancers, consultants, and estate agents.
SL (Sociedad Limitada, equivalent to an LLC). Minimum share capital — €3,000 (a simplified SL form with €1 was introduced in 2023, but in practice banks require more). Registration timeline — 10–20 business days with proper professional support. Opening a bank account is a separate challenge: banks (Sabadell, CaixaBank, Santander) require a full document package and in-person attendance.
Current niches for Russian-speaking entrepreneurs in Marbella:
- Real estate agencies and property management
- Restaurants and cafés positioning themselves for an international audience
- Children’s educational services (there are many Russian-speaking families in the city)
- Yacht services and charter
- Beauty and wellness for an affluent audience
Insider tip: in Marbella, competition is fiercest in the niches that seem ’obvious’ to newcomers — a Russian restaurant, a travel agency, a souvenir shop. Sustainable businesses here are built on the network effect and trust within the expat community, not on tourist foot traffic.
Documents for work: what you need
For any official employment in Spain you need a NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) — a foreign national identification number. This is the first step.
- EU citizens — NIE and registration as a resident.
- Non-EU citizens — NIE plus a work permit. If you already hold a valid residence permit, the work permit is issued automatically.
- For digital nomads — apply for a Visa Digital Nomad through the Spanish consulate before entry, or through the UGE (Unidad de Grandes Empresas) from within the country.
- For autónomo status — register with the Agencia Tributaria (AEAT) and the Tesorería General de la Seguridad Social (TGSS).
Common mistakes
-
Arriving in October looking for hospitality work. The season ends in September; mass hiring happens in March–April. Latecomers are left with no options until the following year.
-
Assume you can get by without Spanish. English is enough in the luxury sector and among expat employers, but competitiveness drops sharply on most positions without at least basic Spanish.
-
Registering as autónomo without understanding the tax system. An autónomo in Spain pays social security contributions regardless of income (except during the first reduced-rate year). This puts real pressure on cash flow from day one.
-
Ignoring the bank account requirement when setting up an SL. Opening a corporate account for a non-resident takes 4 to 8 weeks, and it is the critical path for launching the business — it cannot run in parallel with registration and must be planned well in advance.
-
Confusing the Digital Nomad Visa with a tourist visa. Working for a foreign employer on a tourist visa is a violation of immigration law. The short-term risk may seem low, but it becomes a problem when you apply for a residence permit.
-
Underestimating the seasonality of the local market. A significant share of the luxury-segment clientele in Marbella is present only from May to September. Any business model that ignores this in its financial plan will face a cash-flow crisis in winter.
Which option suits whom
Employment in Marbella is realistic in three scenarios: you hold yachting certifications, you have luxury hospitality experience with the right languages, or you have a strong network in real estate. For digital nomads, it is one of the best options on the Spanish coast — solid infrastructure, climate, and community. For entrepreneurs, the market is niche but the solvent audience is real. The key condition: enter through the community, not through advertising.
