Schools and children in Marbella

Children and schools in Marbella: what options are available to Russian-speaking families, how much it costs and how to apply.

How education for children works in Marbella

Choosing a school is one of the first and most loaded decisions when relocating with children. In Marbella it is harder than it looks: there are many formats, prices vary enormously, and picking the wrong curriculum can cost a child an extra year of adjustment. At the same time, the city offers one of the best selections of international schools on the entire Costa del Sol — along with a Russian-speaking infrastructure that is more developed here than anywhere else in Spain.

International schools in Marbella: programmes, costs, things to know

For families relocating from Russia and the CIS, the main choice is between three leading international schools:

Aloha College — one of the most respected schools on the Costa del Sol. It follows the IB (International Baccalaureate) curriculum, giving direct access to European and British universities. Instruction is in English, with Spanish included as a compulsory subject. Located in Nueva Andalucía, convenient for families from Golden Mile and Puerto Banús.

Swans International School — a British-curriculum school with a close-knit atmosphere and small classes. It has long been popular with Russian-speaking families precisely because of its size: children don’t get lost in the crowd, and teachers know every student. Located in Sierra Blanca.

Las Chapas — a British-curriculum school located closer to Marbella Este. A good fit for families living in Elviria, Las Chapas, and Cabopino. Less prominent among newcomers, but carries a solid reputation and manageable admissions queues.

State schools: free, but with a catch

State education in Spain is free and available to all children with a residence permit — including those still in the process of obtaining one. Enrolment is handled through the local municipality based on place of residence.

The key condition: all instruction is conducted exclusively in Spanish. For a child who doesn’t speak the language, the first 6–9 months will be tough. Some schools have immersion programmes (apoyo lingüístico), but their quality varies significantly from school to school.

An insight rarely mentioned: if a child ends up in a state school with a high concentration of Russian-speaking children — and there are such schools in Marbella, particularly in San Pedro de Alcántara and Nueva Andalucía — adaptation goes faster, but Spanish is learned more slowly. It’s a double-edged situation; keep your relocation goals in mind.

Kindergarten in Marbella and Russian-language preschool education

State guarderías accept children from 4 months; municipal ones from 3 years. Waiting lists are real, especially for infant groups — applications should be submitted several months before the desired start date.

Private kindergartens cost €400–€800/month depending on format and language of instruction. International nurseries attached to major schools tend to be pricier.

A Russian-language kindergarten in Marbella is not a single establishment with a sign above the door — it is a format that exists through community networks. Russian-speaking mothers and expat educators organise part-day groups, home-based mini-nurseries, and cooperative arrangements. Current contacts and reviews can be found in Telegram communities for Russian speakers in Marbella and in VKontakte groups. This segment is alive but fluid: groups open and close, so verify availability just before you move.

A Russian school in Marbella in the traditional sense — a dedicated building with state accreditation — does not exist. However, Russian language and literature classes do operate in a supplementary format: private tutors, Saturday groups, and online lessons from Russian teachers. This is standard practice for children attending international schools: Spanish and English in the main programme, Russian separately.

Common mistakes

  1. Registering for an international school only after you have arrived. Waiting lists at Aloha College and Swans form 6–12 months in advance. Arriving in September without a prior application risks losing a year or sending your child to a state school not by choice, but by necessity.

  2. Assuming the child will ’pick up’ Spanish quickly at a state school without support. Without a tutor or a bilingual speech therapist, the first year in a state school can be stressful and academically wasted. Support is needed from the very first month.

  3. Not checking whether transport is included in the fees. School buses at international schools are a separate line item: €150–€300/month depending on the area. Many families only discover this after signing the contract.

  4. Looking for a Russian school in Marbella as a licensed institution. It doesn’t exist. Holding out for an accredited establishment pulls you away from the real options — private groups and online formats that actually work and deliver results.

  5. Choosing a neighbourhood without considering the school commute. Marbella stretches 27 km along the coast. Living in Elviria and driving your child to Aloha College in Nueva Andalucía means 30–40 minutes each way every day. For families with children, this is a critical factor.

  6. Underestimating the paperwork required for school enrolment. International schools require legalised and apostilled Russian/Ukrainian school records translated into English or Spanish. Apostilles cannot be obtained in Spain — arrange them before you move.

What works for whom

Families with preschool-age children — a municipal kindergarten plus a Russian-language group through local communities: the optimal combination of price and cultural comfort. School-age children aiming for European higher education — Aloha College with IB, enrol a year in advance. Those who want a balance of quality and budget on the eastern side of the city — Las Chapas. Families with a limited budget who are willing to invest in tutors — state school plus intensive Spanish from day one. Russian is maintained separately in every scenario — not an option, but a necessity for a child who will grow up bilingual.

Formats, fees, and enrolment

School in Marbella starts with the neighbourhood

The neighbourhood where you rent will determine your school: in some areas a place at a state school is assigned directly tied to the registered address; in some cases it all comes down to the morning commute. We’ll find housing with an eye on to the school and will prepare your child’s documents from Russia, Belarus, or Ukraine — with apostille and sworn translation. Both take weeks, and application windows are short.
