Study grants in Spain
Spanish scholarships fall into two groups, and they are different doors: government scholarships for those already legally residing in Spain, and international scholarships for those coming from abroad. Half of all rejections happen simply because someone knocked on the wrong door.
How education financing works here
The primary government funding stream is the Ministry of Education scholarship programme; the key requirement is not citizenship but legal residency for the required period. If you hold a residence permit, you are most likely eligible. On top of that come scholarships from autonomous communities — Catalonia, Valencia, Andalusia, Madrid — with softer criteria and lower competition, simply because fewer people know about them.
For those coming from outside
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs programme offers language courses, master’s degrees, and research internships for foreign nationals. In addition, almost every university maintains its own scholarship fund for postgraduate study — searchable on the university website under becas propias, and this is the most underrated source of funding.
An important caveat
The foundation most frequently mentioned in Russian-language roundups is aimed primarily at citizens of Latin American countries — it is generally not suitable for Russian speakers in Spain. Check the citizenship requirements before preparing your application package.
What to prepare in advance
Almost everywhere you need at least intermediate Spanish, and your educational documents must carry an apostille and a sworn translation. This takes months to arrange — not a week before the deadline.
