Study grants in the USA

In the United States, the main source of study funding is not the government but the universities themselves — from their own endowments. So the search here is not for a programme but for a university: two neighbouring schools can have radically different financial aid policies for international students.

How education financing works here

Three sources. The first and most important is the university’s own financial aid, which for international students can be either generous or nonexistent. The second is athletic and academic scholarships awarded for specific achievements. The third is government exchange programmes, where selection is country-based and the rules change regularly.

PhD programs are funded differently

Doctoral programmes in the US almost always come with full funding: the university covers tuition, and you receive a stipend for working as a teaching or research assistant. This is not a perk — it is standard for strong programmes, which is exactly why a PhD is often more accessible to a foreign student than an undergraduate degree.

What to prepare in advance

A language certificate, standardized test scores where the program requires them, letters of recommendation, and a personal statement. A separate requirement is proof of finances for the student visa: even with a scholarship, the consulate looks at how the remaining expenses are covered.
