Higher education in Marbella: the real picture for international applicants
Marbella is not a university city in the classical sense. There is no large state institution with thousands of students and dozens of faculties. Instead, a different ecosystem has developed: international business schools, private colleges with accredited programmes, and campuses of European universities. For Russian-speaking applicants this means a specific market — instruction in English, high tuition fees, and a focus on business education, hospitality management, and international relations.

Which universities actually operate in Marbella
ESEI International Business School (Marbella Campus)
ESEI — a Spanish business school with a campus in Marbella, accredited in Spain. Offers bachelor’s and master’s programmes in business, marketing, and hospitality management. All instruction is in English. One of the few institutions in the city with official student visa support.
Les Roches Marbella
Les Roches — the Marbella campus of Les Roches Global Hospitality Education, a Swiss hospitality management school. Specializes in hotel and luxury hospitality management. Graduates receive diplomas from the Swiss parent institution, widely recognized by industry employers. One of the most recognizable higher education brands in Marbella.
Universidad de Málaga (UMA) — distance learning and through filiales
Universidad de Málaga — the nearest large public university (30 minutes from Marbella). Some programmes are available remotely. Spanish is the required language of instruction. Tuition is significantly lower than at private institutions.
Comparison table
| University / programme | Field of study | Language | Cost / year | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ESEI Marbella | Business, marketing, management | English | €12,000–18,000 | Spanish accreditation, visa support |
| Les Roches Marbella | Hospitality management | English | €30,000–40,000 | Swiss diploma, very high tuition level |
| Universidad de Málaga | Wide range of faculties | Spanish | €1,000–2,500 | Remote or relocation to Málaga |

Language requirements
- English language: for ESEI and Les Roches — a minimum of IELTS 5.5–6.5 or TOEFL iBT 72–90 depending on the programme. Some programmes accept the school’s own internal test.
- Spanish language: for UMA and state programmes — B2 level via DELE or an equivalent certificate. Without the language, access to state education is closed.
- An important detail: private schools often admit applicants with B1–B2 English on the condition that they complete an intensive pre-sessional course.
Recognition of a Russian school certificate and nostrification
Spain requires a formal homologación (homologation/nostrification) procedure for foreign educational credentials.
- A secondary school certificate (11 years) must be apostilled and translated into Spanish by a sworn translator.
- The homologation application is submitted to the Ministerio de Educación y Formación Profesional. Processing time: 6–18 months.
- Private universities (ESEI, Les Roches) accept original documents with an apostille and translation without waiting for homologation — the process is simplified under their own internal rules.
- A Russian bachelor’s degree requires a separate homologation or the university’s internal recognition procedure for admission to a master’s programme.
Student visa and residence permit
- Citizens of Russia and other CIS countries who plan to study for more than 90 days require a student visa (Visado de Estudios, type D).
- Submitted at the Spanish Consulate in your country of residence. After arrival — obtaining the Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero (TIE) — the student residence card.
- A student residence permit does not automatically grant the right to work, but allows up to 30 hours per week with the university’s permission.
- Annual visa renewal requires proof of enrolment and satisfactory academic progress.
Cost of living for a student in Marbella
Marbella is an expensive city even by Spanish standards. A realistic budget for 2026:
- Room rental in a private home/apartment: €600–1,000/month
- Student residence halls (where available): €1,200–1,800/month (meals included)
- Food and everyday expenses: €400–600/month
- Transport: bus or scooter — €60–120/month
Total budget excluding training costs: €1,200–2,500 per month.
Scholarships and funding
- Spanish state scholarships Becas MEC are available primarily to EU citizens and those with a work-authorizing residence permit — for recently arrived students from Russia, they are in most cases inaccessible.
- Les Roches and ESEI offer their own merit-based scholarships — up to 20–30% off tuition for strong applicants.
- Erasmus+ scholarships are available to students only after enrollment at a partner EU institution.
- Tip: ask about early enrollment discounts — some private schools offer a reduction of €1,000–3,000 when applications are submitted 6+ months in advance.
Document submission deadlines
| Programme | Main deadline | Late deadline |
|---|---|---|
| ESEI Marbella (autumn intake) | March–April | July |
| Les Roches Marbella | February–March | June |
| UMA (public) | June (via EvAU/PAU) | July |
Common mistakes
- **Counting on a state university in Marbella itself. There is none. The nearest one is in Málaga, which means either relocating or studying remotely.
- Starting the diploma nostrification process after enrolment. The procedure takes up to a year and a half. Applying to private universities in parallel is reasonable, but the state-university route is closed without nostrification.
- Skipping the language test. Showing up without an IELTS/TOEFL certificate and hoping to sort it out on the spot wastes time and undermines your chances of a scholarship.
- Underestimating the cost of living. Marbella is not a student town with cheap accommodation. A budget of €800–900/month for living expenses simply doesn’t work here.
- Not verifying diploma accreditation. This is especially relevant for Les Roches: the degree is highly regarded in the industry, but formally it is a Swiss institution — employers and embassies may interpret its status differently.
- Applying for a student visa without confirmed accommodation. The consulate requires proof of housing for the entire study period — without this document, no visa will be issued.
