Schools and children in Shenzhen

Children and schools in Shenzhen: what options are available to Russian-speaking families, how much it costs and how to apply.

Children’s education in Shenzhen: how it actually works

Shenzhen is one of China’s youngest cities — both in terms of its residents’ ages and the infrastructure itself. Yet that creates a paradox: there are noticeably fewer international schools here than in Beijing or Shanghai, and competition for places is fierce. Families relocating here for China-facing business or work in the IT sector need to sort out their children’s education before they move — not in the first month after arriving.

State schools: why this isn’t an option for most

Formally, China’s state education system is open to foreigners. In practice, it is not. A hukou (household registration) — or at minimum a confirmed employment contract with a local company — is a de facto requirement for enrolment. Even when those conditions are met, all instruction is conducted exclusively in Putonghua, with no adaptation period or language support provided for the child.

Families who have tried this route describe the experience the same way: the child sits in class for several months understanding nothing, and the adjustment stretches on for a year or longer. For children over 8–9 years old this is particularly hard. The exception is children who already speak Chinese or who are planning long-term immersion in local culture.

International schools in Shenzhen: the main options and prices

The highest concentration of international schools is in the Nanshan district and the coastal area of Shekou. This is no coincidence: these neighbourhoods have historically been home to expat professionals working at Huawei, DJI, Tencent, and related companies.

Shekou International School (SIS) — one of the city’s oldest international schools, running an American curriculum from pre-school through Grade 12. The school has a reputation for being stable and consistent, but places are limited and a waiting list is very real.

BASIS International School Shenzhen (Nanshan) — a relatively new school with an American curriculum and high academic standards. Growing rapidly in popularity among families from Asia and Europe. Strong STEM programme.

Tuition at both schools starts at 150,000 CNY per year (around 20,000 USD). These are base fees; enrolment charges, insurance, uniform, meals, and transport are added on top.

Kindergartens at international schools are a different story altogether. Fees start at 8,000 CNY per month and can reach 12,000–15,000 CNY in some programmes. For comparison: a Chinese private kindergarten costs 3,000–5,000 CNY, but the language and cultural barrier remains.

Russian school in Shenzhen and online education

There is no Russian school in Shenzhen in the traditional sense — no permanent offline institution with Russian state accreditation, as exists in Beijing or several European capitals. This is an important point for families planning to return to Russia or sit the Unified State Exam (ЕГЭ).

The standard approach for Russian-speaking families is a combined model: an international school in Shenzhen as the primary setting, plus an online school following the Russian curriculum in the evenings or on weekends. The online school market is now well developed: Sirius.Online, Foxford, Shkola.Online, and a number of private platforms offer full courses with external certification through partner schools in Russia.

The time difference from Moscow is +5 hours (UTC+8 vs UTC+3). Classes on a Russian curriculum typically fall in the late evening Shenzhen time — a real strain on both children and parents that needs to be factored in from the start.

WeChat groups within the Russian-speaking community occasionally see initiatives to organise Russian-language weekend groups or mini-schools — a lively but unpredictable scene that depends entirely on individual enthusiasts.

Neighbourhoods and logistics: where to live for the school commute

If your child is enrolling in SIS or BASIS, it makes sense to look for housing in Nanshan or Shekou. Rents here are higher (apartments from 8,000–15,000 CNY/month for a family-sized unit), but the savings on school transport and time stuck in traffic make it worthwhile. Shenzhen has serious congestion, and daily commutes from Longhua or Bao’an to Nanshan can take 1.5–2 hours each way.

School buses exist at international schools but do not cover all areas and come at an extra cost — confirm routes before signing a rental contract.

Common mistakes

  1. Leaving document submission to the last moment. Waiting lists at SIS and BASIS form 6–12 months in advance. Applications should be submitted as soon as the decision to relocate is made — not after arrival.
  2. They treat a state school as a workable backup option. Without a hukou and without Chinese language skills, this is virtually impossible for a child — and psychologically very hard.
  3. Underestimating the total cost of tuition. On top of the base fee of 150,000 CNY, there is a one-time enrolment fee (10,000–30,000 CNY), plus meals, transport, uniform, and trips. The real figure runs 20–30% above the stated price.
  4. Ignoring the time-zone gap when planning online schooling. A lesson on a Russian curriculum at 19:00 Moscow time is midnight in Shenzhen. That is simply not viable for a school-age child — look for daytime slots or schools with flexible timetables.
  5. Choosing housing without accounting for the school route. In a city without a proper metro system, getting between distant neighbourhoods can turn a school day into a marathon.
  6. Not checking a school’s accreditation before enrollment. Some small ’international’ kindergartens and schools in Shenzhen operate in licensing gray areas — their educational certificates may not be recognized abroad.

Who should choose what

For families with school-age children staying 2+ years, the optimal combination is: an international school (SIS or BASIS) + a Russian-curriculum online school with a flexible schedule. This is expensive — the combined education budget for one child easily exceeds 200,000 CNY per year — but it is the only arrangement that gives a child proper socialization, English-language skills, and keeps the option of returning to the Russian system open.

For preschoolers the question is gentler: a good international kindergarten in Nanshan for 8,000–10,000 CNY per month provides a language-rich environment and a proper daily routine. It is best to start looking for a kindergarten through WeChat groups of Russian-speaking residents — that is where you will find the most up-to-date reviews and real waitlists.

Formats, fees, and enrolment

School in Shenzhen starts with the neighbourhood

The neighbourhood where you rent will determine your school: in some areas a place at a state school is assigned directly tied to the registered address; in some cases it all comes down to the morning commute. We’ll find housing with an eye on to the school and will prepare your child’s documents from Russia, Belarus, or Ukraine — with apostille and sworn translation. Both take weeks, and application windows are short.
