Schools and kindergartens in Shanghai for Russian speakers
Shanghai schools for Russian-speaking children: whether Russian-language instruction exists, what international schools and kindergartens cost, what alternatives to a Russian school are available, and how admissions work.
Children’s education in Shanghai: how the system works for expats
Choosing a school is one of the first decisions a family makes when moving to Shanghai — and one of the most expensive. Education for foreign children in Shanghai works differently than in most other major cities: the state system is effectively closed to non-residents, while the international market is wide but rigidly priced. Understanding the landscape in advance means not losing time and money in the first few months.

International schools in Shanghai: the main options and costs
Most Russian-speaking families choose accredited international schools. They operate in English, award IB, AP, or national programme diplomas, and are legally open to foreign nationals.
The main schools expats tend to consider:
- Shanghai American School (SAS) — two campuses: Pudong and Hongqiao. The largest American school in Asia. AP and IB programmes. Tuition runs approximately 230,000–250,000 CNY per year (excluding the enrolment fee, which can reach 30,000–60,000 CNY).
- Concordia International School — located in Pudong, with a Christian ethos and a strong academic reputation. Around 180,000–200,000 CNY per year.
- Yew Chung International School (YCIS) — multiple campuses across the city, bilingual programme (English + Chinese). One of the few schools where Chinese is embedded systematically. 150,000–180,000 CNY per year.
- Dulwich College Shanghai, Nord Anglia, Wellington College — British-curriculum schools, popular among European expats. Fees are in a similar range: 160,000–230,000 CNY per year.
Insider tip: the enrollment/capital fee often does not appear in a school’s initial marketing materials. It is non-refundable, paid as a one-time charge, and at some schools exceeds half a year’s tuition. Ask about it at your very first contact.
Kindergartens in Shanghai: international campuses and the local context
An international-standard kindergarten in Shanghai is a significant budget item in its own right. International daycare centres, whether attached to expat residential complexes or operating independently, cost from CNY 15,000 per month. Annual costs are thus comparable to school tuition.
The most popular options are concentrated in the Hongqiao, Gubei, and Pudong (Lujiazui / Jinqiao) neighbourhoods — where most expat families live. Montessori, IPC, and bilingual programmes are clustered in exactly these areas.
A more accessible alternative is a private Chinese kindergarten with an English-language stream. Cost: 4,000–8,000 CNY per month. Quality varies, but a number of institutions in Hongqiao and Minhang maintain a solid reputation among local middle-class families. The main nuance: the environment is predominantly Chinese-speaking, which can be either an advantage or a drawback — it depends on your goals for your child.

Comparing options: schools and kindergartens in Shanghai
| Option | Best for | Cost (CNY/year) | Key note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shanghai American School | Families planning for the US or an international diploma | 230,000–250,000 | Highly competitive, enrolment fee required |
| YCIS | Those who want their child to learn Chinese | 150,000–180,000 | Bilingual environment, multiple campuses |
| Concordia | Stable academic environment, Pudong | 180,000–200,000 | Christian school ethos |
| Private Chinese school (English stream) | Long-term residents, budget-optimized | 60,000–100,000 | No IB/AP, local environment |
| International kindergarten | Children up to 6 years, expat environment | 180,000+ | Non-refundable deposit upon enrolment |
| Private Chinese kindergarten (English stream) | Budget optimisation, integration | 48,000–96,000 | Mandarin as the primary language of communication |
Russian school in Shanghai and supplementary education
There is no fully accredited standalone Russian school in Shanghai in the complete sense. Several formats effectively fill this gap:
- Online schools with Russian accreditation (Foxford, Klyuch School, Internet-Urok) — most Russian-speaking families use them alongside the main international school to preserve the Russian language and curriculum.
- Private tutors and small groups — the Shanghai Telegram community regularly features listings from teachers following the Russian curriculum. Several families often join together in groups of 3–5 children.
- Russian-speaking clubs and classes — music, chess, rhythmic gymnastics. Organized informally through chats in Hongqiao.
A tip: if your child is enrolled in a Russian online school with the goal of applying to a Russian university, check in advance whether that platform holds in-person exams through partner venues — the Russian Consulate in Shanghai does not perform this function directly.
Common mistakes
- Registering for school after arriving. Places at SAS, Concordia, and YCIS are taken 6–12 months in advance. Applications should be submitted at the same time as your work visa paperwork — not after you have found housing.
- Not including the enrolment fee in the relocation budget. The enrollment fee is a separate line item of 30,000 to 60,000 CNY and is non-refundable upon withdrawal. Many families only find out about it when they are already signing the contract.
- Counting on a state school. Shanghai’s state schools are effectively inaccessible to children with foreign passports — both legally and practically. Exceptions are rare and require special authorisation.
- Ignoring the language question when choosing a kindergarten. A child placed in a fully Chinese-language environment without preparation can experience severe adaptation stress. Bilingual options (YCIS and several private kindergartens) reduce that risk.
- Overlooking transport logistics. Shanghai is vast. A school in Pudong with an apartment in Hongqiao means 40–60 minutes each way, every day. Many families choose the school before choosing the neighbourhood — not the other way around.
- Not budgeting time for apostille and document translation. Enrollment requires translated and notarized educational documents plus a vaccination record in the Chinese format. Preparing the package takes 2–4 weeks.
Practical takeaway
For families with school-age children arriving in Shanghai for 2–3 years or more, the optimal choice remains YCIS or Concordia — combining reputation, relative affordability compared to SAS, and a strong language environment. For preschoolers on a limited budget, it is worth considering private Chinese kindergartens with an English stream in Hongqiao, supplemented by Russian-language classes online. Applications need to be planned at least six months before the move — this is not a recommendation but a practical necessity.

Formats, fees, and enrolmentSchool in Shanghai starts with the neighbourhood
The neighbourhood where you rent will determine your school: in some areas a place at a state school is assigned directly tied to the registered address; in some cases it all comes down to the morning commute. We’ll find housing with an eye on to the school and will prepare your child’s documents from Russia, Belarus, or Ukraine — with apostille and sworn translation. Both take weeks, and application windows are short.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a Russian school in Shanghai?
There is no Russian school in Shanghai. Some families teach their children Russian-curriculum subjects remotely; others combine an international school with private Russian lessons — tutors are found through diaspora chats. School-age children are mainly enrolled in international schools and study in English.
How much do international schools in Shanghai cost?
Shanghai American School (Pudong and Hongqiao campuses) — around 230,000–250,000 CNY per year, Concordia International School — 180,000–200,000 CNY, Yew Chung (YCIS) with a bilingual programme — 150,000–180,000 CNY. British schools Dulwich College, Nord Anglia, and Wellington College — 160,000–230,000 CNY per year.
What is the entry fee and why do people warn you about it?
Enrollment or capital fee — a one-time non-refundable payment that at some schools exceeds a semester’s tuition (at SAS it can reach CNY 30,000–60,000). It typically doesn’t appear in a school’s early marketing materials, so ask about it at your very first contact.
Can you enrol your child in a Chinese state school?
The state school system is effectively closed to non-residents. Some families choose private Chinese schools with strong English-language streams as a compromise, but the main route for foreigners in Shanghai is accredited international schools.
