Universities in Thailand and Phuket for Russian speakers
Universities in Thailand for Russian speakers: which universities are available in Phuket and across the country, whether you can study in English, how much a year of study costs, what is required to apply from Russia, and how to obtain a student visa.
Universities and higher education in Phuket: applying for Russian speakers
Phuket is not a classic student city, but the situation is changing. In recent years, several Thai university campuses focused on tourism, business, and technology have opened here. For Russian speakers already living on the island or planning to relocate, this is a real path to a Thai degree without moving to Bangkok or Chiang Mai.

Universities in Phuket: the real options
The island’s academic infrastructure is centred around a handful of public and private universities. English-language international programmes are limited — those that exist are deliberate and well-targeted.
Comparison table of universities
| University / programme | Field of study | Language of instruction | Cost / year (2026) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Prince of Songkla University, Phuket Campus | Tourism, IT, business, engineering | Thai / partially English | 45,000–90,000 THB | Public university; the oldest in southern Thailand |
| Phuket Rajabhat University (PKRU) | Tourism, hospitality management, education | Thai | 30,000–60,000 THB | Budget-friendly option; most programs taught in Thai only |
| Stamford International University, Phuket | Business, tourism, communications | English | 150,000–220,000 THB | Private, accredited in Thailand, international-facing |
| International Hotel & Tourism Industry Management School (ITHIM) at PSU | Hospitality Management | English | 80,000–120,000 THB | Joint PSU programme, high demand among expats |
| Walailak University, Phuket International Health Innovation Center | Healthcare, wellness | English / Thai | 60,000–100,000 THB | Niche field, developing campus |
Requirements for international applicants
Enrolling in a Thai university as a foreign student is formally simpler than in Europe, but preparation is still required.
- **Secondary school certificate — required. A Russian certificate is accepted, but a notarized translation into English or Thai will be needed.
- Credential recognition — Thailand is not part of any automatic degree recognition system. For state universities, your school certificate is verified through the Ministry of Education Thailand. The process takes 4–8 weeks; it is best to start it well in advance.
- Language tests: for English-language programmes — IELTS 5.5–6.5 or TOEFL iBT 60–79 (depending on programme and institution). For Thai-language programmes — CU-TFL certificate or the institution’s internal Thai-language test.
- Entrance exams: state universities (PSU, PKRU) run their own admissions tests. Private institutions (Stamford) typically require only an interview and documents.
Document submission deadlines
- First semester (August–September): document submission — February–May.
- Second semester (January–February): applications open September–November (not available for all programmes).

Student visa and residence permit
Studying at an accredited Thai university entitles you to a Non-Immigrant ED student visa.
- Issued for 1 year, renewable annually for the duration of your studies.
- Requires a confirmation of enrolment from the university (acceptance letter + dean’s signature).
- Every 90 days you must check in at the immigration office (Phuket Immigration, Chalong) to report your place of stay.
- The visa does not automatically grant the right to work — a separate Work Permit is required for part-time employment, which in practice is difficult for a student to obtain.
- Family members may enter on a tourist visa or Non-O; one family member’s student status does not automatically extend to relatives.
Cost of living for a student in Phuket
Phuket is more expensive than mainland student cities in Thailand.
- **Rental (studio / condo room): 10,000–20,000 THB/month depending on the neighborhood.
- Food: cooking at home — 8,000–12,000 THB/month; eating at cafés and food courts — 12,000–18,000 THB/month.
- Transport: a personal motorbike is the optimal choice; rental from 2,500–4,000 THB/month.
- Overall budget (excluding education): 25,000–45,000 THB/month.
On-campus dormitories at Phuket universities are underdeveloped — most students find their own accommodation.
Scholarships and financial support
Options are limited, but they exist.
- ASEAN Scholarship and Thai Government Scholarship — competitive programs for international students, administered through the Office of the Higher Education Commission (OHEC). Primarily cover master’s and doctoral programs.
- PSU internal grants — partial tuition coverage for international students with a high GPA; check with the campus International Affairs Office.
- Stamford International periodically offers merit-based scholarships of up to 20–30% off tuition — worth asking about when submitting your application.
- Russian state scholarships (Rossotrudnichestvo) do not cover Thailand.
Recognition of a Russian university degree
If you are transferring from a Russian university or planning to apply for a master’s programme:
- Thai universities assess Russian degrees on a case-by-case basis. There is no unified registry of recognised foreign institutions.
- Required: an apostille on the diploma and transcript, a notarised translation, and an academic transcript.
- For credit transfer of subjects — the decision rests with the receiving faculty; there are no universal rules. Realistically, expect no more than 30–40% of subjects to be recognised, and only when transferring to a closely related programme.
Common mistakes
- Submitting documents without having your diploma recognised. The university may accept the application, but enrolment will be put on hold until the Ministry of Education confirms — you could miss the intake.
- **Planning to work on a student visa. A Non-ED visa does not grant the right to work. Working without a permit violates visa terms and risks deportation.
- Enrolling in a Thai-language programme without a foundation in the language. Thai is one of the most complex languages in the region. Completing a PSU or PKRU programme without a solid B1–B2 level in Thai is virtually impossible.
- Underestimating the cost of living. Phuket is a resort island, and prices are higher than in Chiang Mai or Khon Kaen. A ’Bangkok-level’ budget won’t stretch here.
- Missing the 90-day check-in. Overstaying incurs a fine of 2,000 THB per missed day, cumulative. The immigration office in Chalong is busy; it’s better to apply online via the Immigration Bureau website at least 15 days before the deadline.
- Enrolling through agents without verifying university accreditation. The market includes offerings from institutions not accredited by the Office of the Higher Education Commission — a diploma from such a ’university’ will not be recognised in Thailand or abroad.
