Banks and transfers in in Phuket

The banking reality in Phuket: what has changed and how the system works

Financial infrastructure is the first thing a newcomer in Phuket runs into after finding a place to live. Without a local account many payments simply don’t work: agency rentals, utility bills, and cash transfers to landlords are all fading as the island grows. Since 2022, Thai banks have tightened their requirements for non-residents considerably, and the old route of ’walk in with a passport, open an account’ no longer applies.

Opening a bank account in Phuket: requirements and reality in 2026

Every major Thai bank sets its own account-opening policy — both at the head-office level and at the level of individual branches. This creates a situation where the same bank may refuse you at one branch and open an account at another on the very same day.

Kasikorn Bank (KBank) and Bangkok Bank — the most popular among expats, yet since 2023 they have also become the strictest: they require a Non-Immigrant visa (a tourist visa is not sufficient), proof of address — typically a lease agreement with verified landlord details — and often an informal referral from an existing client or a real estate agency.

SCB (Siam Commercial Bank) and Krungsri (Bank of Ayudhya) are operating somewhat more flexibly in 2025–2026: at certain branches in Phuket — particularly in Phuket Town and Patong — accounts have been opened for holders of an LTR visa, Thailand Elite, SMART Visa, and even long-term student visas. The minimum opening deposit is generally THB 1,000–5,000.

Insider tip. Branches inside major shopping malls (Central Phuket, Porto de Phuket) tend to have a less stringent compliance filter than standalone offices: staff there are accustomed to tourist traffic and foreign clients. Your chances of opening an account are noticeably higher at those locations.

What you must bring in any case:

  • Original passport
  • Visa with a minimum validity of 3 months
  • Rental agreement or letter from landlord
  • Thai phone number (local SIM card)
  • Sometimes: TM30 form with an immigration office stamp

Transfers to Phuket: working methods in 2026

A direct SWIFT transfer from a Russian bank to a Thai one is effectively blocked. A working route is built through intermediary jurisdictions or alternative instruments.

Main schemes:

  • Wise — works for transfers from Kazakhstan, Armenia, Georgia, the UAE, and Europe. The Wise card is accepted at most shops and ATMs. Conversion fee — around 0.5–1.5%; ATM withdrawals — the first ~$50 per month are free.
  • Hub-bank cards — Kaspi (Kazakhstan), TBC / Bank of Georgia (Georgia), Evocabank / Ameriabank (Armenia). Work at Thai ATMs, which charge 150–200 THB plus the issuing bank’s exchange rate margin.
  • USDT route — informal but widely used: crypto exchanges in Kata, Rawai, and Patong convert crypto to THB with minimal paperwork. The legal status of these transactions is a grey area under Thai law.
  • P2P transfers via exchange networks — Russian-speaking exchange offices on the island operate on a ’send roubles/tenge to an account — receive THB in cash’ scheme. The rate is usually 2–4% worse than the interbank rate, but transfers are same-day.

Insider tip. KBank and Bangkok Bank ATMs accept foreign cards more reliably than Krungsri and SCB during peak season — this has been observed empirically by the community. The cash withdrawal limit per transaction is typically 20,000–30,000 THB.

Common mistakes

  1. Going to open a bank account on a tourist visa. Most banks will refuse outright, or reject the application at the compliance stage after an initial approval. Get your visa first — then open a bank account.

  2. Walking into the nearest branch without a plan. Account-opening policy depends on the individual manager and branch. A refusal in one place doesn’t mean a refusal everywhere — it’s worth trying 2–3 branches of the same bank.

  3. Relying on a single tool for storing money. Thai banks can freeze an account on suspicion of currency control violations. A backup card (Wise, Kaspi) is essential.

  4. Not factoring in ATM fees when budgeting. 150–220 THB per withdrawal — with frequent small withdrawals, this adds up to a noticeable amount. It’s better to withdraw less often and in larger sums.

  5. Transferring large sums in THB without explaining the source. Thai banks are entitled to request a source of funds declaration for incoming transfers of 800,000 THB or more. Without supporting documents, the transfer may be delayed or returned.

  6. Ignoring the exchange-rate trap of Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC). Many ATMs and payment terminals offer ’conversion at the ATM rate’ — it is always unfavourable. Choose ’charge in THB’ instead of converting to your card’s currency.

Practical takeaway

For most Russian-speaking expats in Phuket, the practical financial setup in 2026 looks like this: a Wise card or hub-bank card (Kaspi, TBC) for daily expenses and ATM withdrawals — plus a local Thai account at SCB or Krungsri, opened after receiving a Non-Immigrant visa, for rent and large local payments. Those who have just arrived on a tourist visa should start with Wise and work on their visa status in parallel — that unlocks most banking options.
