Schools and children in in Phuket

Children and schools in in Phuket: what options are available to Russian-speaking families, how much it costs and how to apply.

Children’s education in Phuket: how the system works and what to choose

Choosing a school is one of the first and most painful questions when moving abroad with children. In Phuket, the options are broader than in most other cities popular with expats in Southeast Asia: there are international campuses offering British and American curricula, Russian-language private schools, Thai state institutions, and hybrid formats. Making sense of this market matters before signing a rental agreement — where you live should account for the commute to school.

International schools in Phuket: programmes, costs, areas

The international segment on the island is represented by several well-established players. HeadStart International School (campuses near Chalong and Bang Tao) follows the British curriculum and is popular with British, Scandinavian, and Russian-speaking families. QSI Phuket (Quality Schools International) is oriented toward American standards and has historically been strong at the primary level. British International School Phuket (BISP) — one of the island’s best-known campuses, located in the Kap area closer to Bang Tao — offers strong sports facilities and a solid IB programme.

Tuition at international schools starts at 300,000 THB per year and goes higher. BISP and major IB programmes can reach 450,000–650,000 THB/year, including registration and mandatory fees. One detail often buried in price lists: the capital levy — a one-time enrolment fee ranging from 50,000 to 150,000 THB depending on the school. It is non-refundable if the student leaves early.

School transport is a separate expense. A school bus at most international schools costs an additional 25,000–45,000 THB per year, depending on your area.

Russian-language schools and kindergartens in Phuket

Since 2022, the Russian-language educational infrastructure on the island has grown considerably. Today, Phuket has several Russian-language private schools and kindergartens — mainly in the Patong, Chalong, Rawai, and Bang Tao areas. Many follow Russian federal curricula with the option of remote assessment through Russian schools — important for families planning to return.

Cost: 15,000–40,000 THB per month depending on the format (full-day, nursery, primary, secondary). Full-day nursery typically falls within 15,000–22,000 THB/month; school programmes run 25,000–40,000 THB/month.

Insider tip: some of these institutions operate legally as a language school or hobby centre — not as a licensed school. This affects which visa a child can obtain (student visa or not). When choosing, ask directly: does the school hold a Thai Ministry of Education licence, and does it issue an ED visa for the child.

Thai public schools: the reality

State schools in Phuket are formally accessible to foreign children — Thailand does not deny basic education. Costs are minimal: uniform, stationery, small fees. However, instruction is conducted exclusively in Thai, and even with good language adaptation the academic curriculum will be fundamentally different. Quality varies considerably from school to school: state schools in the Thalang and Phuket Town areas are generally considered more organised than those in tourist zones.

A realistic language adaptation timeline for a child aged 7–10 is 6–12 months with full immersion. The process is faster for preschoolers, but parents still need parallel support for Russian or English.

Common mistakes

  1. Booking a school place after arrival. Good international schools fill their cohorts well in advance — especially BISP and QSI. At peak season (November–February) there may be no places available at all.

  2. Not including the enrolment fee in the budget. A capital levy of 50,000–150,000 THB comes on top of the annual tuition and is non-refundable. Many families only learn this when they are already signing.

  3. Choosing a school without verifying its license. Some Russian-language educational centers do not hold an official license from Thailand’s Ministry of Education. This means it is impossible to obtain an ED visa for the child, and there are potential legal risks.

  4. Renting housing without considering the route to school. Phuket is a long, narrow island with no metro. The journey from Rawai to Bang Tao during rush hour can take 50–70 minutes. The school commute should be the first criterion when choosing a neighbourhood.

  5. Ignoring the certification question. If the family plans to return to Russia or move to a third country, the child’s diploma and academic record matter. Not all private Russian-language schools provide official certification — check this in advance.

  6. Underestimating the adjustment period. Children moving from a Russian-language environment into an English-language school often have a very difficult first semester. In-school language support (ESL programmes) is as important a selection criterion as rankings and curriculum.

What suits whom

If the relocation horizon is more than 3 years and your child is school-age, an international school with an IB programme (BISP or HeadStart) ensures academic continuity regardless of your next move. If the family has come for 1–2 years with plans to return or move on — a Russian-language private school with parallel Russian accreditation is the pragmatic choice. For pre-schoolers, it is worth visiting any shortlisted kindergarten in person: daily routine, teacher qualifications, and group sizes matter more than the name above the door.

Children’s education in Phuket is a fast-growing and uneven market. Information goes out of date within a season: prices, availability, and the status of institutions all change. A personal visit and direct questions to the administration are a mandatory step, not an option.

School to in Phuket starts with the neighbourhood

The neighbourhood where you rent will determine your school: in some areas a place at a state school is assigned directly tied to the registered address; in some cases it all comes down to the morning commute. Both take weeks, and application windows are short.
