Working in Phuket: the real market for Russian speakers
Phuket is not a conventional job market — there is no industry, no large corporations with local offices, and no strong hiring scene in the Western sense. But that does not mean there is nothing to do here. Since 2022, the island has become a fully fledged hub of Russian-speaking employment: freelancers, entrepreneurs, real-estate agents, online teachers, and crypto specialists work here at a scale that simply did not exist before. The question is not ’is there work here’ but ’in what form do you want and are able to work.’

What work is realistically available in Phuket
Remote work for a foreign client — the dominant model among Russian speakers. IT, marketing, design, consulting, and online education are all done physically on the island, while payments arrive from Russia, Europe, or international clients. In practice this is the norm; legally it is a grey area: Thai law formally requires a Work Permit even for remote work carried out on Thai soil, but no mass prosecutions of freelancers have been recorded.
Local niches for Russian speakers:
- Real estate is the most active niche. Agents earn commissions of 3–5% per deal, with large sales bringing 150,000–500,000 THB per transaction. The entry bar is market knowledge and a contact network, not a degree.
- Tourism services — guides, tour organisers, transfers. Competition with locals is stiff here, and margins are lower.
- Online education — teaching Russian, English, school subjects, coaching. Fully remote.
- Crypto and fintech — there is no formal job market, but Phuket is a magnet for traders, Web3 developers, and fund managers.
Jobs in Phuket in the conventional sense (office-based employment) are virtually non-existent for foreigners: Thai labour law protects the local market, and most positions in hotels, restaurants, and tourism are closed to non-residents without a special work permit.
Salaries and income: benchmarks by niche
Talking about ’Phuket salaries’ in relation to Russian speakers is only loosely accurate — most are self-employed. That said, earnings in specific niches are possible to estimate.
| Niche | Income type | Range (THB/month) | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| IT development (remote) | Contract/freelance | 100,000–300,000+ | Paid in USD/EUR, favorable exchange rate |
| Real estate agent | Commission | 50,000–300,000 | Unstable, season-dependent |
| Online tutor | Freelance | 30,000–80,000 | Ceiling limited by hours |
| Guide / tour service | Employment/self-employment | 25,000–60,000 | Competition with Thai locals |
| Crypto / trading | Personal P&L | Uncapped | No guarantees, high risk |
| Manager at a Russian business | Employment (with WP) | 40,000–80,000 | Rare, Work Permit required |
**The cost of living in Phuket for a single person including rent is 35,000–60,000 THB per month, depending on the area and lifestyle. This sets the minimum income threshold for a comfortable life here.

Starting a business in Phuket: structures and reality
**Opening a business in Phuket is a popular request that conceals a complex Thai corporate structure. Foreigners cannot own a Thai company outright in most industries — a restriction under the Foreign Business Act. Workarounds exist, but they carry risks.
Main legal formats:
- Thai Limited Company (Co., Ltd.) — the standard structure. A foreigner may hold a maximum of 49%, with the remaining 51% held by Thai shareholders (nominees). Registration costs: 15,000–30,000 THB through a lawyer; minimum registered capital of 2,000,000 THB to obtain a Work Permit.
- BOI company — a preferential regime for technology and innovation businesses. A foreigner may own 100%, benefits from tax holidays, and receives a simplified Work Permit. Requirements: an approved business activity, minimum capital, and a business plan.
- SMART Visa / LTR Visa — do not grant the right to employment, but legally cover the stay of entrepreneurs, investors, and specialists.
Popular business models in Phuket:
- Real estate agency (operating through a Thai legal entity)
- Café or restaurant (high entry threshold — rent + FBA licence)
- Digital agency or IT studio (fits well under BOI)
- School or educational centre
Insider tip: Many people set up a Thai company not to run an actual business, but to obtain a Work Permit and legitimise remote work. Formally, the company must have 4 Thai employees for each foreign director holding a WP — a requirement that is met in different ways in practice and is often subject to negotiation with auditors.
Employment legalization: Work Permits and visa schemes
Work Permit — the key document for formal employment. Without it, any paid activity on Thai soil is technically illegal. A WP can be obtained:
- Via a Thai employer (hotel, agency, school)
- Through your own Thai company, meeting capital and staffing requirements
- Through a BOI-approved company — the cleanest option
Thailand SMART Visa (for tech specialists, investors, and startups) grants the right to work without a separate Work Permit within the scope of the approved activity. Valid for up to 4 years; qualification and confirmed income requirements apply.
LTR Visa (Long-Term Resident) — for high-net-worth remote workers with an income of at least $80,000/year and verifiable assets. Tax benefits included; no Work Permit required for employment with a foreign employer.
Common mistakes
-
Working without a Work Permit, assuming «everyone does it». The risk of deportation during an inspection or a dispute with an employer is real — and so is a complaint from a competitor or neighbour.
-
Setting up a Thai company with nominee shareholders and no legal protection. If a nominee decides to exercise their stake, the law is on their side. You need a properly drafted lawyer agreement — not just a handwritten note.
-
Counting on office-based employment with a Thai employer. Most positions are closed to foreigners, and the salary offers where a WP is actually possible are lower than typical freelance income.
-
Ignoring tax residency status. If you have spent more than 180 days in Thailand in a calendar year, you are a tax resident. Since 2024, Thailand has changed its rules and may tax foreign income transferred into the country within the same year.
-
Underestimating seasonality in business. Restaurants, travel agencies, and short-term rentals can lose 30–60% of revenue in low season (May–October). Any business model here must account for this.
-
Not verifying the reputation of law firms. The legal services market in Phuket is saturated, and some players operate dishonestly — especially when it comes to company registration and Work Permits. Check recommendations in the community; don’t choose based on price alone.
What works for whom
If you’re an IT professional or digital freelancer — the minimum path is to live in Phuket on a tourist or METV visa, work remotely, and legalize through an LTR visa or BOI company if desired. If you’re an entrepreneur looking to work with the Thai market, you’ll need a Co., Ltd. with a real operational structure and legal support. If the goal is real estate — you can enter as an agent through a partner Thai agency without your own legal entity. Phuket offers opportunities, but it doesn’t forgive a casual attitude toward the legal side.
