How transport in Nha Trang works: what to know before you move

Transport infrastructure is one of the first practical challenges anyone moving to Nha Trang has to face. The city stretches along the coast, expat neighborhoods are scattered between Phuoc Hai and Phuoc Tien, and distances that look modest on a map turn into a serious logistical puzzle during rush-hour traffic. The sooner you understand how local transport actually works, the less money and frustration you’ll waste.

Urban transport in Nha Trang: the real picture

There is no metro in Nha Trang and none is on the horizon — searches for ’Nha Trang metro’ return no results for good reason. This is a resort city with a flat layout and a long-established motorbike culture, not a metropolis with a developed underground system.

City buses exist, but the route network covers mainly central and tourist areas. For Russian-speaking expats living in coastal neighbourhoods, buses are rarely an option: departure times are unpredictable, routes seldom align with where you need to go, and communicating with drivers without Vietnamese is difficult.

Grab — the only civilised taxi option. The app works reliably and offers both GrabCar (car) and GrabBike (motorbike). A ride across town costs 30,000–80,000 VND depending on distance and time of day. Convenient for occasional trips, but the costs add up quickly if used as everyday transport.

Motorbike: the main way to get around Nha Trang

For the vast majority of expats, a motorbike is the primary and most practical form of transport. It handles 90% of daily tasks: the market, cafés, school, the beach, a coworking space.

**Rental starts at 1.5 million VND per month for a basic semi-automatic (Honda Wave or equivalent). Automatic scooters — Honda Vision, Yamaha Jog — run 2–3 million VND/month. For long-term rentals (3 months or more), the price can typically be negotiated down by 15–20%.

Buying a used motorbike costs 8–15 million VND for a working bike in reasonable condition. The upper end gets you a Honda Air Blade or PCX in decent shape. A new mid-range scooter starts at 30–40 million VND. Buying makes sense if you plan to stay at least 6 months: the cost pays off, and when you leave you can resell with minimal loss.

Insider insight: when buying a used motorbike from a private seller, always verify that the frame and engine numbers match the vehicle registration document (Cà vẹt). Some bikes on the market are still registered to previous owners, and if police check, the problem falls on the rider, not the seller.

Driving licence in Nha Trang: what actually works for Russians

The question of driving licences in Nha Trang for Russians is one of the most painful issues for the diaspora. Formally, Vietnam does not recognise Russian driving licences directly: an International Driving Permit (IDP) under the Vienna Convention is theoretically valid, but Vietnam is not a full party to that agreement, and in practice acceptance depends on the individual officer.

To ride a motorcycle with an engine over 50 cc, you need a Vietnamese category A1 licence (up to 175 cc) or A (above). You can obtain one with a valid residence permit or long-term visa: the theory exam is in Vietnamese, though some schools offer preparation with an interpreter.

For a car — category B2. The procedure is the same; processing time is 1.5 to 3 months, including the medical examination and tests.

Most expats ride bikes under 50cc (no licence required) or, in practice, ride more powerful ones — accepting the risk of a fine. The fine for riding without a licence ranges from 800,000 to 2,000,000 VND. Not catastrophic, but it adds up under systematic checks.

Buying a car in Nha Trang: buy, rent or avoid altogether

Buying a car in Nha Trang is the solution for those staying long-term with legal status (residence permit). A foreigner without a residence permit cannot register a vehicle in their own name directly — only through a Vietnamese partner or a legal entity. A used Toyota Vios or Kia Morning starts from 300–450 million VND. Running costs include insurance, vehicle inspection, and parking, which is scarce in central Nha Trang.

For trips out of town — to Da Lat, Mui Ne, Hội An — hiring a car with a driver is the best option. Cost: from 1.2–1.8 million VND per day depending on the route and vehicle class. It’s far safer than driving yourself on unfamiliar mountain roads.

Common mistakes

  1. Riding a powerful motorbike without a Vietnamese licence, hoping for the best. Police checkpoints at city-centre entry points operate on a routine basis, fines are real, and insurance will not pay out in the event of an accident.
  2. Buying a used motorbike without checking the Cà vẹt (vehicle registration document). Mismatched numbers are a direct route to confiscation at a checkpoint.
  3. Treating Grab as cheap everyday transport. Two or three rides a day adds up to costs comparable to renting a motorbike, but without the freedom to go wherever you like.
  4. Planning mountain-road road trips without experience driving in Vietnam. Road markings, right-of-way rules, and local driver behaviour are fundamentally different from what you are used to — for the first few months, hiring a car with a driver is the wiser choice.
  5. Registering a vehicle in a Vietnamese acquaintance’s name without a proper legal agreement. Disputes arising from sales or the owner’s departure are well documented within the expat community.
  6. Ignoring seasonality: during the rainy season (September–November) roads flood, and a motorbike parked in a low-lying area can have its engine submerged — where you park is critical.

Practical takeaway

For most people arriving in Nha Trang, the optimal strategy is to rent a motorbike from the first month, sort out the legal situation in parallel, and — if you are staying 6+ months — consider buying a used scooter. A car is only justified if you have a residence permit and a family with children for whom riding a motorbike is impractical. Grab covers occasional trips and evening outings. Transport in Nha Trang is simple in terms of options, but the legal details demand attention — this is exactly where most expats lose money or run into trouble.
