Healthcare in Nha Trang

Health and medicine in Nha Trang: how insurance works, where to go and how to find a Russian-speaking doctor.

Healthcare in Nha Trang: what to know before you move

Healthcare is one of the first questions that families and freelancers relocating to Nha Trang have to resolve. The city has grown into a fully-fledged expat hub since 2022, and along with the diaspora, a Russian-language medical infrastructure has developed — though it is uneven. Understanding the difference between the public and private systems, choosing the right insurance, and finding the specialist you need in advance means avoiding a panicked search at the moment when you feel unwell.

Public and private healthcare: the quality gap

Nha Trang’s public hospitals — primarily Bệnh viện Đa khoa tỉnh Khánh Hòa (the provincial general hospital) — are adequately equipped for basic care. A visit costs 100,000–300,000 VND, and some procedures are nearly free. However, the language barrier is a real obstacle: staff speak only Vietnamese, queues are long, and even explaining basic symptoms becomes a challenge. For a tourist with a fracture or acute food poisoning — manageable. For routine treatment or paediatric care with young children — not suitable.

Private clinics operate differently. The Vinmec and Thu Cuc networks maintain standards comparable to a mid-range European facility: English-speaking staff, modern equipment, and clear paperwork. A GP consultation runs 400,000–800,000 VND, an ultrasound from 300,000 VND, blood tests 200,000–600,000 VND depending on the panel. The nearest Vinmec branches are in Ho Chi Minh City and Nha Trang — check the network’s official website for current addresses, as the clinic list is updated regularly.

Russian-speaking doctors and specialists: how to find them

This is the kind of insight you will not find in tourist guides. Several Russian-speaking practitioners work in Nha Trang — paediatricians, dentists, gynaecologists — but they generally do not have their own clinics with a sign outside. Most see patients in rented consulting rooms, by appointment, via messaging apps. Up-to-date contacts can only be found through diaspora Telegram chats (groups such as “Russians in Nha Trang” (Русские в Нячанге) or “Nha Trang for Our Own” (Нячанг для своих)): that is where live discussions and reviews happen, and where the list is kept current.

Dentistry is a chapter of its own. Private dental practices in the Phuoc Hai and Phuoc Tien districts offer quality treatment at prices that feel remarkably low to those arriving from Russia: filling from 300,000 VND, professional cleaning 500,000–800,000 VND, implant from 15,000,000 VND. Within the Russian-speaking diaspora, a handful of specific practices with a steady Russian-speaking clientele are passed around by word of mouth through community chats.

Health insurance in Nha Trang: not an option, but an obligation

Healthcare in Nha Trang — Russian speakers — a common search by those who have already broken something or caught a tropical infection and are not sure how to pay. Emergency hospitalisation without insurance at a private clinic means bills starting from 5,000,000 to 50,000,000 VND and above, depending on the severity. Treatment for dengue or a severe intestinal infection with drips and tests can easily exceed 10,000,000 VND.

Main insurance options for those living long-term in Nha Trang:

OptionBest forAnnual costKey note
SafetyWing NomadFreelancers, solo travellers~$56–70/monthDoes not cover routine treatment; stay in one country is time-limited
SafetyWing Remote HealthFamilies, long-term expatsfrom ~$150/monthCovers routine care; broader coverage scope
Cigna GlobalThose wanting full coveragefrom $200–400/monthLonger to set up, but genuinely works at private clinics in its network
AXA / Allianz TravelShort-term visitsfrom $30–60 / tripNot for long-term residents

Prices in the table are market reference points: government fees and third-party rates at the time of publication. These are not SVOY prices — our service fees are provided on request and in the ’Services’ section.

An insider detail: SafetyWing Nomad limits continuous stays in a single country — if you remain in Vietnam for more than 90 days out of 180, coverage is suspended. This is critical for those living permanently in Nha Trang. In that case, Remote Health or Cigna is the better option.

Tropical risks: what travel blogs don’t tell you

Vietnam is a dengue fever endemic zone. The peak season runs August–October, but cases occur year-round. Early symptoms resemble the flu, yet a blood test (platelet count and NS1 antigen) should be done at the first sign of suspicion — it costs 300,000–500,000 VND at a private lab. Taking ibuprofen during dengue is dangerous, as it thins the blood. Every local knows this; not every newcomer does.

Other common concerns include: intestinal infections during the rainy season, heatstroke in children, and insect bites causing allergic reactions. Nha Trang’s pharmacy network is well developed — Long Châu and Pharmacity branches can be found in most neighbourhoods, and basic antibiotics are available without a prescription, which is both convenient and a genuine risk.

Common mistakes

  1. Counting on a public hospital without an interpreter. Without a Vietnamese–Russian or at least Vietnamese–English intermediary, getting adequate care is nearly impossible — even taking a medical history becomes a challenge.

  2. Buying travel insurance for long-term residence. SafetyWing Nomad and most travel policies lapse once you’ve been in a single country beyond a set period. You typically discover this at the moment you need to make a claim.

  3. Ignoring the first symptoms of dengue. Resting at home ’like with the flu’ is a strategy that sometimes ends in intensive care. A dengue test costs less than the equivalent of 500 roubles.

  4. Searching for a Russian-speaking doctor on Google. Most of them aren’t there — they work through diaspora networks. Google will return tourist aggregators or long-outdated contact details.

  5. Taking antibiotics without a diagnosis. The availability of antibiotics without a prescription encourages self-treatment. With tropical infections, this is at best ineffective and at worst masks symptoms until complications develop.

  6. Not checking insurance coverage before visiting a clinic. Not all private clinics in Nha Trang operate on direct billing with insurers — you often have to pay out of pocket and then seek reimbursement. Find out the process in advance.

Who should choose what

For families with children — priority goes to finding a Russian-speaking paediatrician through diaspora chats, plus insurance covering routine care (SafetyWing Remote Health or Cigna). For solo freelancers — SafetyWing Nomad as a minimum safety net, but with a clear understanding of its time limits. For those relocating long-term — Cigna Global from the outset: it is the only option that works properly in a ’living here, not travelling’ format. Russian-speaking healthcare in Nha Trang exists, but requires being embedded in the diaspora — without that, you are effectively in the same position as a regular tourist.
