Banks and transfers in Nha Trang
Finances in Nha Trang: where to open an account, which banks are foreigner-friendly, and how to transfer money across borders.
Nha Trang’s banking system: what foreigners need to know before arriving
Banking is one of the first practical hurdles every Russian-speaking expat in Nha Trang faces. Cash runs out quickly, Russian cards do not work, and opening an account as a foreigner is a task full of nuances not covered in any travel guide. Yet the banking setup you choose determines how comfortably you receive income, pay rent, and send money home or abroad.

Which banks in Nha Trang open accounts for foreigners
Opening an account in Nha Trang is possible — but not at every bank and not with just any set of documents. In practice, three banks tend to be the most accommodating to foreigners:
- Techcombank — the most popular choice among expats. Branches are available downtown and in the Phuoc Hai area. An account can be opened with a passport and a valid visa (a tourist E-visa is accepted). The app is in English and fully functional; a Visa or Mastercard is issued within 3–7 business days.
- VPBank — an alternative with a simpler verification process. A passport is sometimes sufficient, with no additional documents required. Mastercard, with a stable online banking platform.
- BIDV (Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam) — a state-owned bank, more conservative in its procedures but reliable. Some branches require proof of temporary residence registration (a notarized lease agreement).
Insider tip: Branch staff rarely speak English beyond a basic level. Bring a Vietnamese-speaking acquaintance or use a phone translator — it will save you an hour and prevent a refusal ’due to miscommunication.’ At branches in the tourist zone (Trần Phú avenue, the waterfront), staff are somewhat more accustomed to foreigners.
Cards, ATMs, and everyday payments
Mir cards do not work in Vietnamese ATMs — this is a system-wide restriction, not a Nha Trang-specific quirk. ATMs accept internationally issued Visa and Mastercard. The cash withdrawal fee at a third-party ATM is typically 20,000–55,000 VND per transaction, plus any fee charged by your issuing bank.
ATMs at VPBank and Techcombank typically allow withdrawals of up to 5,000,000–10,000,000 VND per transaction (roughly 200–400 USD at 2026 exchange rates). If you need a larger sum in cash, it is better to go directly to a branch teller.
Card payments are accepted at major supermarkets (BigC, Vinmart), shopping malls, and mid-range restaurants. Street cafés, markets, and small service providers accept cash or QR payments via Vietnamese apps only (VietQR, MoMo). MoMo is not available to foreigners without a local phone number and verification.

Transfers to and from Nha Trang
This is the most painful topic for Russian-speaking expats. Direct bank transfers between Russian and Vietnamese banks are effectively non-existent in 2026 — SWIFT transactions from Russia are blocked or highly unpredictable.
Workable arrangements:
| Method | Best for | Approximate costs | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Western Union | One-time transfers, small amounts | 1–5% of the amount | Branches available, but not at all banks in Nha Trang |
| Zolotaya Korona | From Russia to countries with a partner network | Fee from 1.5% | Cash pickup at partner locations |
| Cryptocurrency (USDT/TRC-20) | Freelancers, entrepreneurs | 0.5–2% on exchange | Not legalised in Vietnam, but widely used in practice |
| Cash exchange | Those bringing or receiving cash | Depends on the exchange rate | Typical chain: rubles → USD → VND |
| Wise / Revolut | Recipients with non-Russian cards | 0.4–1.5% | Do not work with Russian accounts |
Prices in the table are market reference points: government fees and third-party rates at the time of publication. These are not SVOY prices — our service fees are provided on request and in the ’Services’ section.
Insider tip: in Nha Trang there is an informal currency-exchange market within the Russian-speaking diaspora — peer-to-peer exchanges via Telegram channels. Rates there are often 1–2% better than bank rates, but the risks of in-person meetings and lack of guarantees are real. Works well for amounts up to 500–700 USD; for larger sums, use verified services.
Exchanging cash rubles → USD → VND is the standard working method. The dollar exchange rate in Nha Trang is stable; exchanging rubles for VND directly is significantly less favorable — very few exchange offices handle that pair, and the spread is high.
Common mistakes
-
Arriving without cash dollars. Your first days in Nha Trang will almost certainly pass without a working card. Keep a minimum of 500–1,000 USD in cash for the first two weeks.
-
Count on a Russian bank card. Cards from Tinkoff, Sber, and other Russian banks — including co-badged Mastercards — will in all likelihood fail to process transactions. Don’t rely on them as your primary payment tool.
-
Opening an account without a valid visa. An expired visa or a visa used for exit — and the bank will refuse. Accounts are only opened with valid proof of legal stay in the country.
-
Ignoring ATM fees. Withdrawing cash 5–6 times a month in small amounts can cost you up to 15–20 USD in fees alone. Plan fewer, larger withdrawals instead.
-
Transferring money through unfamiliar intermediaries without due diligence. Exchange fraud exists within diaspora communities. Only work with people recommended by trusted community members.
-
Underestimating the tax risks of crypto exchange. Vietnam has not legalised cryptocurrency as a means of payment. Large transactions through local exchangers can theoretically attract scrutiny. For consistently large sums, consult a local lawyer.
Practical takeaway
For most Russian-speaking expats in Nha Trang, the practical setup looks like this: a Techcombank or VPBank account for everyday expenses and rent payments, cash USD as a reserve and primary exchange tool, USDT or Zolotaya Korona for incoming transfers from Russia. It’s not ideal, but it works — and it’s exactly how most people in the Phuoc Hai and Phuoc Tien neighborhoods get by right now.
