Getting legal status in Nha Trang: which documents and statuses Russian speakers need and where to begin.
Vietnam’s visa regime: what to know before relocating to Nha Trang
Vietnam is one of the few Asian countries where it is genuinely possible to obtain long-term legal status without buying property or assembling a complex corporate package. But a “relatively simple” visa regime does not mean an easy-to-understand one: the system is multilayered, local agencies often oversimplify the picture, and document errors are costly. Below is a practical guide for those seriously considering legalization in Nha Trang — not just for a season.

E-visa, tourist visa, and visa runs: the basics
E-visa — the starting point for most people. Apply online through the official portal evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn; it costs 25 USD, is valid for 90 days, and comes in single- or multiple-entry versions. Multiple-entry lets you leave and return without losing your remaining time — important for frequent travellers.
Tourist visa through an agency (letter of approval + stamp on arrival) costs from 500,000–800,000 VND for the agency’s services, plus $25 at the border. The difference from an e-visa lies in flexibility: some agencies can arrange a visa on different terms through the consulate.
Visa run — a trip to a neighboring country (usually Cambodia via Moc Bai, or Thailand) to reset your immigration status. Before 2023 the scheme worked with virtually no restrictions; today border officers track the frequency of entries. After 3–4 consecutive visa runs there is a real risk of questions at the border. Insider note: in Nha Trang, several agencies offer all-inclusive visa run packages — bus, border crossing, return — totalling 2–3 days and around 3,500,000–5,000,000 VND. Convenient, but not a systemic solution.
DN business visa and temporary residence permit
For those planning to stay longer than 90 days without regular border runs, the practical tools are a DN business visa or a TRC (Temporary Residence Card).
The DN visa requires an invitation letter from a Vietnamese company. It is issued for up to 12 months and allows multiple entries. The invitation must come from a Vietnamese company with which you have a genuine business relationship: either your own registered company or an actual employer. Local agencies offer ’sponsorship’ from a third-party firm for 150–300 USD/year — however, if the sponsoring company has no real business dealings with you, the status will be revoked upon inspection. SVOY does not facilitate such arrangements. Important: the DN visa does not grant the right to work as an employee — a separate work permit is required for that.
A residence permit (TRC) — a temporary residence permit — is issued for 1 or 2 years and is the most stable status for long-term residence. Grounds for obtaining one:
- registering your own business (LLC / company with foreign capital)
- long-term employment contract with a Vietnamese employer
- marriage to a Vietnamese national
- having a registered company and the role of director/representative
Obtaining a TRC takes 4–8 weeks at the provincial immigration office (Công an tỉnh Khánh Hòa — the province where Nha Trang is located). The state fee is around 500,000–1,000,000 VND. Agencies on the market charge 200–500 USD for assistance — this typically covers document filing only, and does not include business registration or an employment contract, both of which are required as the legal basis for a TRC. SVOY’s prices for full-service status processing are available on the Vietnam services page.

Comparing statuses for Russian speakers in Nha Trang
| Status | Who it suits | Duration | Market prices (not SVOY) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| E-visa, multiple-entry | Digital nomads, ’first year’ | 90 days | 25 USD | Frequent entries may draw scrutiny |
| Visa run | Those who have not yet obtained a DN visa | one-time exit | 3,500,000–5,000,000 VND | Not scalable; risk of refusal |
| DN Visa | Business owners, freelancers | up to 12 months | 150–300 USD/year for an invitation | A company with actual operations required |
| Residence permit (TRC) | Families, entrepreneurs, long-term stays | 1–2 years | 200–500 USD to apply + government fee, no base required | Requires a business or contract |
Apostille, certified translation, and document legalisation
Legalisation in Nha Trang is a story in itself. For renting, opening a bank account, registering a business, and obtaining a TRC, you will need translated and notarised documents: passport, birth and marriage certificates, diplomas.
The process is as follows:
- An apostille is obtained in Russia before departure (for documents issued by Russian authorities). Retroactive apostilling through representatives in Russia is possible, but takes 4–6 weeks.
- Notarized translation into Vietnamese is done by agencies in Nha Trang. Cost: 200,000–500,000 VND per document, turnaround — 1–3 business days.
- For a TRC, foreign documents must additionally be legalised at the Vietnamese consulate or through the foreign ministry with an apostille.
Several agencies in Nha Trang have Russian-speaking managers specializing in documents for Russians in Nha Trang: they handle the full cycle — from apostille through Russia to submission at the immigration office. This saves time, but it is important to request a contract with clearly stated deadlines.
Common mistakes
- Counting on endless visa runs. Since 2023–2024, border control has been systematically tracking entry frequency. After 3–4 consecutive crossings, a refusal or a reduced permitted stay becomes a real possibility.
- Obtaining a DN visa through a nominal sponsor with no real company. If an inspection reveals the sponsoring company is not actively operating, the status will be revoked — and deportation will cost more than honestly registering a business.
- Putting off the apostille ’for later.’ Apostilling Russian documents from abroad takes at least a month. Without apostilled documents, a TRC cannot be issued.
- Confusing registration of residence (propiska) with visa status. A long-term lease obliges the landlord to register the foreign national with the local police — this is a separate procedure, independent of the visa. If the landlord refuses to register you, that’s a problem: without registration, you cannot obtain a TRC.
- Not vetting the agency. The market in Nha Trang is full of middlemen who charge for ’residence permit processing’ with no real understanding of the procedure. Ask for references and sign a contract that specifies the outcome, not just the ’service’.
- Assuming a DN visa equals the right to work. A business visa legalizes your stay, but not employment. To work as a salaried employee, you need a separate work permit, which must be arranged by your employer.
What to choose and for whom
For the first year in Nha Trang — a multiple-entry e-visa followed by a transition to a DN visa through your own company or employer. If your horizon is 2+ years and you have a business or a stable contract, a TRC resolves most residency issues and opens access to banking products and long-term rentals directly. For families with children, a TRC is especially important: it simplifies enrollment in both local and international schools. It’s best to start preparing documents — including apostilles — 2–3 months before your planned move.
