London universities for Russians: studying, prices, admissions

London universities for Russians: what studying at UCL, Imperial, LSE, and King’s really costs's and Queen Mary, why a Foundation year is needed after a Russian school, how much money to show for a student visa, the Chevening scholarship, and the closing window of the Graduate route.

London universities for Russian speakers: the real picture

London is the most expensive entry point into European education — and simultaneously the most transparent: there are no connections to cultivate, no entrance exams to pass; everything comes down to grades, English proficiency, and an application through the unified UCAS system. There are no free programs for international students, but Chevening scholarships, university grants, and legal part-time work up to 20 hours a week are available. The most important thing to understand from the start: a Russian school certificate is not accepted directly into a British undergraduate program — between secondary school and university there is always either A-levels or a Foundation Year. That means one extra year and one extra budget, and it is precisely this hurdle where most plans fall apart.

The second thing to know in 2026: the Graduate route window is closing. Those who apply for the graduate work visa before 31 December 2026 get 2 years to find a job. Those applying from 1 January 2027 get only 18 months. For doctoral graduates, 3 years remain.

UniversityFields of studyCost for international students / yearNotes
UCLFull range: medicine, engineering, humanities, economicsDepends on the programme — exact figures via the fee finder on the UCL websiteTuition is fixed for the entire course (cohort guarantee)
Imperial College LondonEngineering, IT, natural sciences, medicinefrom £45,500The most expensive on the list, with almost no humanities programs
LSEEconomics, law, social sciences, politics£28,000–35,000Narrow focus, extremely competitive entry for economics
King's College London (KCL)Medicine, law, humanities, business£27,100–35,800Strong medical school, campuses in the centre
Queen Mary (QMUL)Law, medicine, engineering, business£29,450–53,950Upper end is medicine; part of the Russell Group

For comparison: a British national pays £9,790 per year for the same thing. The gap between the ’home’ and ’overseas’ rate is the true cost of the matter, and there is no way around it: status is determined not by citizenship, but by years of legal residence in the United Kingdom.

Prices are a guide for 2026/27 and depend on the specific programme. Always check the exact rate on your course page: within a single university the range can be twofold.

How to apply: a step-by-step logic

1. Bridging the gap after a Russian school. A Russian school certificate does not grant direct entry to a bachelor’s programme. Two options:

  • A-levels — 2 years, maximum flexibility, accepted by all universities including top-ranked ones;
  • International Foundation Year — 1 year at a university, faster and cheaper, but some Foundation programmes are only recognised by their own affiliated universities. Before paying, check exactly which institutions the programme gives access to.

2. English. IELTS Academic 6.0–7.0 depending on the university and programme (LSE and medicine lean toward 7.0). The visa requires a UKVI-approved test — a standard IELTS Academic is not accepted for the Student route, and this is a common and costly mistake.

3. Application. Undergraduate — only through UCAS, up to 5 programmes per application, fee £28.95. Postgraduate — directly to the university, no UCAS.

4. Timeline (applying for 2027).

  • October 15, 2026, 18:00 UK — Oxford, Cambridge, medicine, dentistry, veterinary science. The deadline is firm, no extensions.
  • mid-January 2027 (usually 14 January, 18:00 UK time) — all other programmes, the ’equal consideration’ deadline: everything submitted on time must be considered equally by universities. Check the exact date at ucas.com.

5. Postgraduate application package: degree with translation, 2 references, motivation letter, transcript. Once you receive an offer, the university issues a CAS — without it you cannot apply for a visa.

Student visa and money: exact figures

Student route, applying from abroad:

ItemAmount
Visa fee£558
IHS healthcare surcharge£776 per year of study
Proof of funds (London)£1,529 × 9 months = £13,761
Plus payment for the first year of tuitionper the university invoice

The 28-day rule is where most people slip up. The funds must sit in the account for 28 consecutive days without dropping below the required amount, and the last day of that period must be no more than 31 days before the date of application. It’s not enough to ’have the money’ — it must have stayed there untouched. A single transfer in and out during the period resets the clock.

Work during studies: up to 20 hours per week during term time for degree-level programmes, with no restrictions during holidays.

Education costs in London: how to realistically bring them down

Chevening — a full master’s package: tuition, living stipend, and flights. An important note for Russian citizens: for the 2026/27 cycle, Chevening accepted applications from Russian nationals only if they were residing outside Russia — meaning if you have already relocated, the door is open; if not, it is not. The 2026/27 cycle is closed; the next one typically opens in late summer. Eligibility criteria are reviewed annually — check chevening.org before you begin preparing.

University scholarships. UCL, Imperial, LSE, and KCL offer their own scholarships — typically partial coverage, applied for separately from the programme application and often with an earlier deadline.

Location. Universities in zones 3–6 are cheaper to live near while offering the same degree. A separate option is University of London Worldwide: distance-learning programs with a British degree, no visa required, no £13,761 in the bank needed.

Recognition of Russian documents

Certificates and diplomas are assessed by the university itself, often through UK ENIC. Formally, nostrification as a separate state procedure is not required — but a proper translation and apostille are needed, and the university may request an equivalency assessment at your expense. A Russian school-leaving certificate is typically equated to a level requiring a Foundation Year before undergraduate study; a Russian bachelor’s degree is generally recognized for entry into a master’s program.

Documents with an apostille and sworn translation can conveniently be prepared remotely — Enjoy Freedom handles this.

Common mistakes

  • Taking the wrong IELTS. The visa requires the UKVI version. A standard Academic result means retaking the entire test.
  • Using last year’s figures. The financial requirement has risen to £1,529/month and the visa fee to £558. Calculations from the previous year will result in a refusal.
  • Moving money within 28 days. Formally the funds exist, but by the rules — they don’t.
  • Enrolling in a Foundation without checking where it leads. Some programmes feed only into their own institution.
  • Delaying the Graduate route. Applying from 1 January 2027 means 18 months instead of 2 years.
  • Ignoring the exchange rate. Tuition and IHS are charged in pounds: a 10% rate swing on a £35,000 balance adds another £3,500.

What comes next

Paying tuition is a separate challenge: transferring £30,000+ from Russia to a UK university by conventional means is no longer possible, and the university accepts payment only in its own name and on time — miss the deadline and the offer lapses. This kind of transfer requires advance planning, with the route chosen to match the amount and the bank.

Housing

Housing in London is sought before applying for a visa: an address is needed for the CAS, and a deposit plus rental history are a separate hurdle for newcomers without a UK credit profile. Search and verification — home.svoy.io.

Frequently asked questions

Can you apply to a British university straight after a Russian school?

No. A Russian secondary school certificate does not give direct entry into an undergraduate programme: between school and university, you need either A-levels (2 years) or an International Foundation Year (1 year) at a university. Before paying for a Foundation programme, check which universities it actually feeds into — some programmes only count towards their own institution.

How much does education in London cost for Russians in 2026?

There are no free programmes. Reference figures for 2026/27: LSE — £28,000–35,000 per year, King's — £27,100–35,800, Queen Mary — £29,450–53,950 (the upper end is medicine), Imperial — from £45,500. A UK student pays £9,790 for the same degree: the rate depends not on citizenship, but on years of legal residence in the United Kingdom.

Where should Russian speakers start when it comes to studying in London?

Start with two checks, not with choosing a university. The first: how to bridge the gap between a Russian school certificate and a bachelor’s degree — A-levels or a Foundation Year, and which universities each pathway gives you access to. The second: money — the full annual tuition cost plus £13,761 held in your account for 28 consecutive days. Applications go through the UCAS system; there are no entrance exams or personal connections that matter here — it comes down to grades and English.

How much money do you need to show in your account for a student visa to London?

£1,529 per month for up to 9 months — a total of £13,761 — plus the first year of tuition. Visa fee £558, IHS healthcare surcharge £776 per year. The key rule: funds must remain in the account for 28 consecutive days with no dips, and the last day of that period must be no earlier than 31 days before the application date.

Can you stay in the UK after studying?

Yes, under the Graduate route visa — and a window is closing: those who apply by 31 December 2026 will receive 2 years to find work; from 1 January 2027 that drops to 18 months. Doctoral graduates retain 3 years. The fee is £937 plus £1,035 per year for the IHS.

Is the Chevening scholarship available to Russian citizens?

For the 2026/27 cycle, Chevening accepted applications from Russian citizens only if they were residing outside Russia — the path is open for those who have already relocated. The scholarship covers tuition, living costs, and flights. The 2026/27 cycle is closed; the next one usually opens in late summer. Terms are reviewed annually — check chevening.org for updates.

How to pay for a British university from Russia?

Sending £30,000+ by a standard transfer to a UK university is no longer straightforward today, and the institution only accepts payment in its own name and strictly on time — otherwise the offer lapses. We help you complete such a payment legally and on schedule, finding the right route for your amount and bank.
