Work and business in London

Work and income in London: which fields are genuinely hiring Russian speakers, what the visa situation looks like and how to start your own business.

The London job market for Russian speakers: structure and reality

London is one of the few megacities where a Russian-speaking professional with relevant experience can reach a competitive salary within the first few months. But the market here works differently from continental Europe: formal qualifications matter less than a portfolio and references, and visa status determines not only your right to work but also how willing an employer will be to invest in hiring you. Understanding this logic is precisely what separates those who find a good job in London within a month from those who spend six months looking.

Visa routes: Skilled Worker and Graduate Route

For most Russian speakers moving to London for work, two paths are relevant.

Skilled Worker Visa — the primary route for employment. The employer must be a licensed sponsor, the role must appear on the list of eligible occupations, and the offered salary must meet the minimum threshold. Since 2024, that threshold has been significantly raised: for most positions it stands at £38,700 per year. Exceptions remain for certain shortage occupations (healthcare, select engineering roles).

Graduate Route is open to those who have graduated from a UK university. It gives two years of work without being tied to a specific employer — a real competitive advantage: you can change jobs, explore industries, and move into a startup. For Master’s graduates, the period is three years.

Insider moment: many employers in London look at visa status before the interview stage. If you have a Graduate Route visa or ILR — mention it explicitly in your CV or cover letter. This addresses a recruiter’s unspoken concern at the very first screening stage.

Salaries in London: by sector and level

Salaries in London are notably higher than the UK average, but the cost of living absorbs a significant portion of that advantage. Below is a realistic range of gross salaries for 2026 across the sectors where Russian-speaking professionals tend to be concentrated.

Note: the UK tax burden is progressive. On a £60,000 salary, the effective income tax rate (Income Tax + National Insurance) will be around 32–35%. Plan your budget based on the net figure.

How to start a business in London: a practical roadmap

Starting a business in London as a non-resident is technically straightforward — Companies House registers a Private Limited Company (Ltd) online for £50 within 24 hours. The operational reality, however, is more complex.

Key steps:

  • Registration with Companies House — online; a UK address is required (a registered office service can be used, from £50/year)
  • Opening a business account — traditional banks (Barclays, HSBC) require an in-person visit and a lengthy verification process. A practical starting point is Tide, Revolut Business, or Monzo Business — accounts open in 1–3 days
  • Registration with HMRC — for tax purposes and VAT (mandatory when annual turnover exceeds £90,000)
  • Choosing an accountant is not an optional step. The London market for small-business accounting services starts at £100–150/month.

Insider insight: if you plan to run a business in London but need a visa yourself — the Innovator Founder Visa or Global Talent Visa are the relevant routes, but both require approval from an endorsing body. Simply registering a Ltd company does not grant the right to work or reside.

The Russian-speaking business scene in London is most visible in Kensington and Chelsea (consulting, real estate, private banking), in Canary Wharf (finance, fintech), and — perhaps surprisingly — in Wembley, where small and medium-sized businesses cluster: restaurants, beauty, retail.

Common mistakes

  1. Counting on the fellow-expat network. The Russian-speaking community in London is large, but closed referrals within it rarely lead to quality positions. The London market requires active work on LinkedIn, direct applications and participation in professional events.

  2. Underestimating the salary threshold for the Skilled Worker visa. Many candidates secure a job offer only to discover the employer isn’t a licensed sponsor or the salary falls short of £38,700. Clarify this before the final interview round.

  3. Opening a Ltd without understanding how taxation works. Corporation Tax, PAYE, VAT, Self Assessment — four separate obligations with different deadlines. HMRC penalties accrue automatically, even on zero turnover, if returns aren’t filed.

  4. Translating your degree and assuming that is enough. In medicine, law, and engineering, professional recognition from a regulator (GMC, SRA, Engineering Council) is required. A translated diploma is only the first step in a lengthy process.

  5. Ignoring the difference between gross and net when planning a move. An offer of £70,000 sounds impressive, but after tax and National Insurance you take home around £48,000–50,000 a year, or roughly £4,000 a month. In London that is comfortable, but far from lavish.

  6. Not clarifying the sponsorship conditions upon dismissal. A Skilled Worker Visa is tied to the employer. If you are let go, you have 60 days to find a new sponsor or change your status — a critically short window for a calm job search.

Who should choose what

London’s job market is most rewarding for IT professionals, finance specialists, and medical practitioners with strong English and international experience — this is where the highest concentration of relevant employers and vacancies is found. For entrepreneurs, the city offers access to capital, clients, and infrastructure, but requires a clear understanding of tax and visa logic from day one. For those testing the market, the Graduate Route or temporary agency contracts are a sensible way to enter without long-term commitments.
