Study grants in Hong Kong
Hong Kong competes for strong doctoral candidates with money: the local PhD stipend is one of the most generous in Asia, covering not only the monthly payment but also conference travel for several years.
How education financing works here
The primary route is the government doctoral scholarship scheme, shared across state-funded universities. Applications are submitted through a central system and then confirmed directly with the university — skipping that second step is the most common mistake. For undergraduate and master’s programmes, government scholarships and internal university funds are available.
English is the working language
Almost all programmes for international students are taught in English; Cantonese is needed for everyday life, not for studying. This makes Hong Kong one of the most accessible entry points into Asian higher education for Russian speakers.
What to prepare in advance
An international language certificate, a research proposal for postgraduate study, and references from academic supervisors. Deadlines under the general scheme fall earlier than university deadlines — plan accordingly.
