Schools and children in Mexico City

Children and schools in Mexico City: what options are available to Russian-speaking families, how much it costs and how to apply.

How education for children works in Mexico City

Choosing a school in Mexico City is one of the first decisions that determines how smoothly a family settles into the city. Getting it wrong is costly — not only financially but in terms of adaptation: a child placed in the wrong environment loses a year. The education market in Mexico City is diverse: from free state schools to expensive international programmes with waiting lists for enrolment. Understanding the structure helps you make the right decision before you move, not after.

International schools in Mexico City: IB, American and British programmes

For families relocating without Spanish or with a 2–3 year horizon, international schools are the most logical option. International education in Mexico City is concentrated in a few districts: Las Lomas, Santa Fe, Polanco, and to some extent Condesa.

Key names in the market:

  • Colegio Americano de México — one of the oldest and most prestigious American schools, offering a US Curriculum + IB program, from 180,000 MXN/year and up.
  • Peterson Schools — a network of several campuses with broad city coverage; tuition ranges from 120,000 to 200,000 MXN/year depending on level.
  • Edron Academy — British curriculum, GCSE and A-levels, catering to children of diplomats and international business families, from 200,000 MXN/year.
  • Greengates School — another long-established British option, located in the north of the city in the Ciudad Satélite district.

Insider tip: enrolment at top international schools closes 6–10 months before the academic year begins. If you’re planning a September move, applications need to be submitted no later than November–December of the previous year. Those who apply in July typically come away empty-handed or end up on a waiting list.

Spanish-language private schools: a price-quality compromise

If the family is planning a long-term stay and is open to immersion in the language, Spanish-language private schools offer solid academic education at significantly lower costs. The range is 30,000–80,000 MXN/year. Areas with the strongest options: Coyoacán, Benito Juárez, Naucalpan.

State schools in Mexico are free and formally open to children of any immigration status. However, without a basic command of Spanish a child will find themselves isolated: teachers generally do not speak English and there is no individual support. Real integration in a state school takes 6–12 months and requires parallel Spanish lessons — an additional expense.

Kindergartens and early childhood education in Mexico City

There are no formal Russian-language kindergartens in Mexico City in any institutional sense. Russian-speaking families solve the problem differently: through expat communities, private nanny groups form — 3 to 6 children, a Russian-speaking nanny or educator, a rented space for a few hours. You can find this format through Telegram chats for Russian-speaking expats in Mexico City and themed Facebook groups.

International preschools affiliated with major schools — Peterson, Colegio Americano — accept children from age 2–3, but fees are proportional to school tuition.

Local private jardines de niños cost 8,000–20,000 MXN/month depending on the neighbourhood and programme. In the Roma and Condesa areas there are several bilingual preschools offering English and Spanish, which is convenient for families who have not yet settled on a long-term plan.

Common mistakes

  1. Delaying school selection until after the move. Applications to international schools are submitted six months to a year in advance. Families who arrive without an enrollment in place are forced to choose from whatever remains.

  2. Overestimating a child’s readiness for Spanish immersion. Even a motivated child with no language foundation can lose an academic year in a Spanish-speaking environment at ages 8–10. Language support is needed from day one, running alongside regular schooling.

  3. Looking only at the tuition fee. On top of the advertised cost come: inscripción (enrolment fee — sometimes up to 30,000 MXN), uniform, learning materials, transport, and meals. The real budget can be 20–40% higher than the stated figure.

  4. Ignoring the school’s location. Mexico City is a vast metropolis with unpredictable traffic. A daily 40-minute school run can quickly turn into 1.5 hours each way. The school’s neighbourhood should match the neighbourhood where you rent.

  5. Expecting a Russian school in Mexico City to function as a formal institution. There is no official Russian school in Mexico City. What exists are community groups and private initiatives — the language is maintained through tutors and online programmes from Russian schools (external study).

  6. Not checking a school’s accreditation. Some private bilingual schools in Mexico operate without international accreditation, which causes problems when transferring a child to another country. Before enrolling, it is worth confirming whether the diploma is recognized outside Mexico.

What to choose and for whom

Families with a horizon of up to 2–3 years and school-age children — international schools with IB or an American curriculum, provided applications are submitted early. Families with long-term plans and preschool-age children — bilingual preschool in Roma or Condesa as a gentle start, transitioning to a Spanish-language private school. The budget scenario of a state school is viable but requires serious language preparation for the child — ideally before the move.

Formats, fees, and enrolment

School in Mexico City starts with the neighbourhood

The neighbourhood where you rent will determine your school: in some areas a place at a state school is assigned directly tied to the registered address; in some cases it all comes down to the morning commute. We’ll find housing with an eye on to the school and will prepare your child’s documents from Russia, Belarus, or Ukraine — with apostille and sworn translation. Both take weeks, and application windows are short.
