Transfers and parcels in Mexico City
Transfers and courier deliveries in Mexico City: how to send important items through fellow community members — documents, medicines, small parcels.
How to send a parcel or handoff from Mexico City in 2026
Logistics between Mexico City and Russia stopped being a simple matter of choosing a courier service after 2022. There are no direct flights, SWIFT transfers are frozen, and most standard routes operate only through third countries. Even so, the Russian-speaking community in Mexico City remains active and continues to send belongings, documents, and money — just by different means. Here is how it works in practice in 2026.

Courier delivery in Mexico City — the community’s go-to tool
Okaziya — sending items via a fellow traveller — remains the most reliable and affordable way to deliver small parcels. In the case of Mexico City, it works like this: someone is flying in the right direction (Istanbul, Dubai, Yerevan, Belgrade) and takes along someone else’s package in exchange for an arrangement or a small fee.
You can find an okazia from Mexico City in Russian-language Telegram chats — search for the keywords «okaziya», «lechu iz CDMX», «vezu». Listings appear regularly, especially before peak travel seasons (November–December, March–April). For routes via Istanbul or Dubai, finding a travel companion from Mexico City is realistic within 1–3 weeks.
What to keep in mind:
- You can send documents, medicines (from the permitted list), small electronics, and clothing via courier
- The average fee for a small package (up to 2 kg) is 500–1,500 MXN, depending on the route and urgency
- Documents — passports, notarized papers — are often carried free of charge; this is standard practice in the community
- A full suitcase of belongings (up to 20 kg) via a courier favour is typically settled by covering part of the baggage fee or 2,000–5,000 MXN
Sending documents from Mexico City via courier is standard practice, but it is important to make sure the carrier is a real person with a known profile in the community. Ask for a profile link, references, and a photo of their passport.
Courier services and parcels via third countries
A classic parcel from Mexico City to Moscow via DHL or FedEx is technically possible, but in practice delivery to Russia through these services is restricted, unreliable, and extremely expensive. Sending a 5 kg box can cost 4,000–8,000 MXN, with unpredictable timelines and a high risk of loss or customs delays.
A more workable route is via Armenia or Kazakhstan:
- You ship a parcel via DHL/FedEx from Mexico City to Yerevan or Almaty
- An intermediary (an individual or small service) receives it there
- The intermediary reroutes the parcel to Russia within CIS logistics (CDEK, Boxberry, Armenian Post → Russian Post)
Total time — 10–21 days, cost including two shipments — 3,500–7,000 MXN per box up to 10 kg. It’s more expensive than a courier hand-carry, but suitable for bulky or fragile items.
Comparing transfer methods
| Method | Best for | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hand-off via fellow traveller | Documents, small parcels up to 3–5 kg | 500–3,000 MXN | Requires trust, depends on flight availability |
| DHL/FedEx direct | Urgent documents to neutral countries | 2,500–6,000 MXN | Unstable to Russia, better to UAE/Armenia |
| Via intermediary (Armenia/Kazakhstan) | Boxes, electronics, clothing | 3,500–7,000 MXN | 2 stages, slower but reliable |
| Mexican Post (Correos de México) | Books, small non-essential items | 800–2 500 MXN | Very slow (30–60 days), no tracking |

How to transfer money from Mexico City to Russia
SWIFT transfers to Russian banks are frozen. Working options in 2026:
- Cryptocurrency (USDT/BTC): the fastest option. Buy on a Mexican exchange (Bitso — the largest local platform), send to the recipient’s wallet. Fee — 1–3%.
- UAE-based schemes: some services (for example, operators in the Roma/Condesa area) offer a Mexico City → Dubai → RU card scheme. The exchange rate is 3–6% below market, but cash in Mexico → rubles on a card does work.
- Carrying cash via courier: technically possible, but carries declaration risks. Amounts exceeding 10,000 USD must be declared at any border.
An insider detail: Mexico City has several Russian-speaking informal currency exchange operators, found through private Telegram chats. Their rates are often better than official ones, but they work by referral only — they do not advertise publicly.
Common mistakes
- Shipping directly via DHL to Russia without monitoring delivery status — there is a high chance the parcel will stall at customs or be returned after 3–4 weeks with part of the value withheld.
- Trusting a delivery favour to a stranger without references — simply ask for 2–3 reviews from the chat or a link to their message history in the community.
- Not packing documents in a waterproof envelope — flights with layovers and long transits through Istanbul or Dubai create a real risk of documents getting wet or damaged.
- Confusing import and export allowances — 500 USD is the franquicia for importing goods for a passenger arriving in Mexico (300 USD by land), not a limit on exports. When leaving Mexico, what must be declared is not electronics but cash and monetary instruments exceeding 10,000 USD.
- Relying on Correos de México for urgent deliveries — Mexico’s state postal service does operate, but delivery times to Russia via third countries run 45–90 days, and tracking is lost once parcels leave Mexico.
- Not clarifying a courier’s route — a person may be flying through Istanbul, but their final destination is Berlin. Make sure the handoff is going exactly where you need it to go.
Who should choose what
For documents and small personal items, a hand-carry through a Telegram community is the optimal choice: cheap, fast, and with human oversight. For boxes of belongings or electronics, a scheme via an intermediary in Armenia or Kazakhstan is more reliable, though pricier. Mexico’s postal service works only for non-urgent shipments with no deadline. The most efficient way to transfer money is via cryptocurrency or trusted operators — SWIFT to Russia is still not a viable option in 2026.
