Schools and children in Dubai
Children and schools in Dubai: what options are available to Russian-speaking families, how much it costs and how to apply.
How education for children works in Dubai: what to know before you move
Choosing a school in Dubai is one of the first decisions families make when relocating — and one of the most costly. Dubai offers a broad network of international private schools, state Arabic schools, and early-years institutions, but the logic of this market differs significantly from what people are used to in Russia or Europe. Getting it wrong at the selection stage can cost tens of thousands of dirhams and a lost school year.

International schools in Dubai: system and costs
All private schools in Dubai are licensed and regularly inspected by KHDA (Knowledge and Human Development Authority) — the local education regulator. Each school receives a rating: Outstanding / Good / Acceptable / Weak. The rating is published on the KHDA website and genuinely affects waiting lists and fees.
Main study programs:
- British Curriculum (GCSE / A-Levels) — the most widely available; well regarded for university admission across Europe
- American Curriculum (AP / SAT) — popular among families planning to study in the US or Canada
- IB (International Baccalaureate) — universally recognised, accepted worldwide, but more expensive and academically demanding
- Indian CBSE / ICSE — budget segment, from AED 15,000–20,000 per year, popular with cost-conscious families
Annual tuition cost range:
| Programme | School level | Annual cost (AED) | Best suited for |
|---|---|---|---|
| British Curriculum | Mid-range | 35,000 – 55,000 | Families with a 3–5 year horizon in the UAE |
| American Curriculum | Mid / high | 40,000 – 70,000 | Future move to the US / Canada in mind |
| IB | High | 60,000 – 95,000 | Top universities in Europe, demanding academic workload |
| Indian CBSE | Budget | 12,000–22,000 | Short-term relocation, cost savings |
| Russian school | Niche | from 30,000 | Language preservation and Russian curriculum |
On top of those figures, there is almost always a registration fee (AED 1,000–3,000, non-refundable), a registration form (AED 500–1,500), and sometimes transport (AED 5,000–10,000 per year).
Russian school in Dubai and Russian-language education
Russian School of Dubai exists and is actively running — it is a genuine option for families planning to return to Russia or wanting their child to maintain full command of the language and alignment with the Russian national curriculum. Tuition starts at AED 30,000 per year; in recent years the format has been partially hybrid.
Key insight: most Russian-speaking families in Dubai do not choose a Russian school as their primary option — children attend a British or American school, while Russian language and maths following the Russian curriculum are covered by tutors or Saturday schools. The tutoring market in Dubai is very well developed: AED 150–300 per academic hour with a qualified native-speaking teacher. This makes it possible to combine an international qualification with maintaining the Russian language.
Saturday schools run by Russian-speaking communities — informal clubs and online classes with teachers from Russia — cost AED 300–600 per month and solve the language-continuity question without a full switch to the Russian curriculum.

Kindergartens in Dubai: what you need to know
Kindergartens in Dubai are also entirely private — there are no state kindergartens for foreigners. Licensed nurseries follow the British EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) curriculum or its variations.
Price range:
- Standard nursery (full day): AED 2,000–4,000 per month
- Premium nursery (Jumeirah, Downtown): AED 4,500–7,000 per month
- Private nannies (full-time, live-in): AED 2,500–4,500 per month + accommodation and meals
Spots at good nurseries fill up 3–6 months in advance. Applications should be submitted before you even move, especially in Jumeirah, Arabian Ranches, and The Springs — competition for places there is fierce.
A practical point: when choosing a nursery, check the current KHDA rating — it is updated annually. An Outstanding rating is no guarantee of the best experience for your particular child, but it is a safeguard against basic safety and methodology issues.
Neighbourhoods and logistics: where to live so you are not driving your child an hour each way every day
Dubai is a large city, and transport logistics shape your choice of home just as much as price does. Most families follow the same principle: school first, then apartment.
Clusters with a high concentration of good schools:
- Jumeirah / Umm Suqeim — British curriculum, walking distance to several top schools
- Mirdif — more affordable schools, family-friendly neighborhood
- Motor City / Sports City — good schools at relatively affordable rents
- Arabian Ranches / Damac Hills — villas, family-friendly atmosphere, schools within the community
- Al Barsha — proximity to several large campuses, good transport links
School buses in Dubai are standard practice. But many families skip them: routes are long, and a child can spend 60–90 minutes on the bus. When choosing a home, factor in realistic commute times from the start.
Common mistakes when choosing a school in Dubai
-
Booking accommodation before choosing a school. A family rents an apartment in Downtown, then discovers that the nearest suitable school is a 40-minute drive away.
-
Focusing only on KHDA ratings. An Outstanding school with 500 people on the waiting list is, in practice, out of reach. The real question is whether a place is available right now, for the year you need.
-
Overlooking additional expenses. Uniform, textbooks, trips, extracurricular activities, transport — these realistically add AED 8,000–15,000 per year on top of the advertised tuition.
-
Treating a Russian-language school as the only option. For long-term residents, an international qualification matters more for the child. Russian can be maintained alongside it.
-
Not checking availability in person. School websites are often outdated. Call directly to confirm waitlist status — ideally in March–April of the year before the September you need.
-
Ignoring a trial adaptation period. Some schools allow a trial visit before enrolment. This is a valuable opportunity — children react to new environments in very different ways, and a parent’s résumé is no guide.
What works for whom
British or American curriculum — the default choice for most families planning to stay in Dubai for 3 years or more. IB — if the child is academically strong and the target is a European university. Russian school or Saturday-school format — if the family plans to return or it is essential to stay aligned with the Russian curriculum. Indian CBSE — if the budget is tight and the priority is functional English without aiming for top universities.
The market’s key rule: good schools in Dubai do not wait — waiting lists are real, and the enrolment process starts 6–12 months in advance. Planning your children’s education needs to happen alongside your housing search, not after it.

Formats, fees, and enrolmentSchool in Dubai starts with the neighbourhood
The neighbourhood where you rent will determine your school: in some areas a place at a state school is assigned directly tied to the registered address; in some cases it all comes down to the morning commute.
