How transport in Cancún works

Cancún is a sprawling, decentralized city. The tourist zone (Zona Hotelera), the business center (Centro), and residential neighborhoods (Supermanzanas) are separated by several kilometers, and how you get around directly determines your quality of life and monthly budget. Cancún has no metro and none is planned anytime soon — searches for ’Cancún metro’ rightly return nothing. Urban mobility rests on three pillars: buses, taxis/Uber, and personal transport.

Buses, taxis, and Uber: everyday transport in Cancún

City buses (R-1, R-2) — the cheapest option: a fare costs 13–15 MXN (around 0.7–0.8 USD). The R-1 route runs the full length of the Zona Hotelera to Centro and operates around the clock. Cash only; change is not always given. Air-conditioned, but sometimes freezing cold — bring a light layer.

ADO — premium intercity bus service. Connects Cancún with Playa del Carmen (~70 MXN), Tulum (~120 MXN), Mérida (~350 MXN), and Mexico City (overnight, ~1,200 MXN). For short trips along the Riviera Maya, ADO is more practical than renting a car.

Uber operates reliably in Cancún. A trip from Centro to Zona Hotelera costs 80–130 MXN. To the international airport (CUN) from Centro — 180–250 MXN; from Zona Hotelera — 120–180 MXN. Note: Uber cannot be requested from inside the airport terminal — you need to walk to the car park and wait 3–5 minutes.

Taxis have no meters — fares are negotiated. Local drivers automatically quote the tourist rate. Approximate fares: Centro to Zona Hotelera 200–300 MXN. If you’re staying long-term, arrange a fixed rate with a regular driver.

Buying a car in Cancún: buy or rent

**Car rental from local agencies starts at 400 USD/month for a basic model (Nissan Versa, VW Gol). Major international brands (Hertz, Alamo, National) at the airport are more expensive — from 600 USD/month — but come with more transparent insurance. One insider note: local agencies often do not include CDW (collision damage waiver) in the base price — it is added on the spot, and the final bill can be 30–50% higher.

Buying a car in Cancún is a real option for those staying longer than 6 months. The used-car market is active: Nissan Tsuru, Versa, VW Jetta — from 80,000–120,000 MXN (4,000–6,000 USD) in decent condition. Platforms: Mercado Libre, Segundamano, and offline lots along Avenida Tulum. Transfer of ownership (cambio de propietario) takes 2–4 weeks and costs around 3,000–5,000 MXN, including the notary and tramites at the Secretaría de Finanzas Quintana Roo.

**Fuel (gasolina Magna) costs around 22–24 MXN/liter in 2025–2026. Pemex stations are everywhere; cards aren’t always accepted, so it’s best to carry cash.

Motorcycles and scooters are a popular choice among digital nomads. Scooter rental starts at 2,500–3,500 MXN/month; buying second-hand starts at 15,000 MXN. Insurance is often not included in the rental — that detail matters.

Driving licences and documents: Russian licences in Cancún

Mexico recognises foreign driving licences for short-term use. Russian licences are formally valid for the duration of the tourist permit (up to 180 days) with a translation or international driving permit (IDP). In practice, police in Cancún rarely check for an IDP, but in the event of an accident or serious inspection, the absence of a translation can cause problems.

If you plan to stay longer and are applying for residency, you’ll need a Mexican licencia de conducir. It’s issued at SEMOVI (Servicios de Movilidad) offices or through the Tenencia de Cancún. You’ll need: a CURP (or FMM for temporary residents), proof of address (comprobante de domicilio), a medical certificate (obtained on site), and payment of a fee of approximately 500–700 MXN. Processing time: 1–2 business days.

Common mistakes

  1. Counting on a metro or urban rail network. Neither exists. Cancún’s transport infrastructure is deliberately built around the car and the tourist bus — accept this as a given when choosing a neighbourhood.

  2. Renting a car without checking the insurance. The base rate from many local agencies does not include damage protection. Read the contract before signing: CDW, liability, and theft protection are three separate line items.

  3. Going to the airport without leaving extra time for Uber. During peak hours (6:00–9:00 and 17:00–20:00), wait times can be 10–20 minutes, and traffic on Boulevard Kukulcán is unpredictable. Allow 2.5 hours before your flight.

  4. Ignoring the translation of your driving licence. A Russian licence without a notarised Spanish translation or an International Driving Permit is technically invalid during a traffic stop. In the event of an accident, this becomes a serious problem with your insurer.

  5. Buying a car in an individual’s name without checking the historial vehicular. Mexico’s used-car market is full of vehicles carrying unpaid tenencia (vehicle tax) or outstanding fines — all of which pass to the new owner. Check through the Repuve portal and the Secretaría de Finanzas QR before completing the transaction.

  6. Underestimating parking costs in Zona Hotelera. Paid car parks near malls and beaches charge 50–100 MXN/hour. For daily drivers, this becomes a significant budget line that is easy to overlook when calculating the cost of owning a car.

Practical takeaway

For your first 1–3 months in Cancún, Uber plus ADO covers 90% of your needs without unnecessary expense. If you’re settling in for six months or more, a scooter or used car gives you freedom and pays for itself quickly. Families with children and those who travel frequently around the Yucatán Peninsula will find a personal vehicle worthwhile from day one. As for a licence — get your Mexican one as soon as you have your CURP: the process is straightforward, and the peace of mind on the road is worth a day of your time.
