Banks and transfers in Cancún
Finances in Cancún: where to open an account, which banks are foreigner-friendly, and how to transfer money across borders.
Cancún’s banking system: what to understand right away
Cancún is not a financial center but a tourism and relocation hub. Local banks cater to residents with a tax history in Mexico, and opening an account in Cancún for a foreigner without preparation is harder than it looks. At the same time, the city is growing rapidly as a base for digital nomads and families who have relocated from the CIS — and the banking infrastructure is gradually adapting to that demand.
A key point: in Mexico, a bank account is effectively tied to the RFC (Registro Federal de Contribuyentes) — the equivalent of a tax ID number. Without it, you will at best receive a basic account with limits, or at worst a polite refusal. Foreigners can obtain an RFC through SAT (Mexico’s tax authority) with any immigration status, including a tourist FMM visa — but in practice the Cancún office is busy, and an in-person appointment can take 2–4 weeks.

Cancún banks for foreigners: an honest comparison
The three main banks with enough branches and ATMs in Cancún are BBVA México, Banorte, and Santander México. Each has its own approach to working with non-residents.
| Bank | Best for | Minimum deposit | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| BBVA México | Wide audience, English-language interface available | from 500 MXN (Cuenta Azul) | Frequent rejections without an RFC; debit card is the standard product |
| Banorte | Residents, employees with a contrato de trabajo | from 0 MXN (Banorte Fácil) | Most accommodating for temporary residents with an RFC |
| Santander México | Freelancers, entrepreneurs with LLC/S.A. | from 1,000 MXN | Better suited for international SWIFT transfers |
| HSBC México | Business clients, corporate accounts | from 5,000 MXN | Opens accounts with an ITIN/EIN for those with a US entity |
Insider tip: BBVA has the widest ATM coverage in the Hotel Zone and city centre — this matters because using another bank’s ATM costs 30–60 MXN per transaction, and the fees add up quickly. Many expats open a BBVA account specifically for ATM access, while using Santander for incoming international transfers.
Transfers in Cancún: how to receive money from abroad
The question of money transfers in Cancún is one of the most practical for those working remotely or receiving income from Russia, Europe, or the US.
Wise (formerly TransferWise) — the go-to tool for receiving EUR and USD with minimal conversion costs. A Wise account with EUR/USD/GBP details can be opened online without a Mexican address and acts as a buffer: funds arrive in Wise, then move to BBVA or Santander via SPEI (Mexico’s interbank transfer system) in MXN. Conversion fee — 0.4–1.2% depending on the currency pair.
Payoneer — well suited for freelancers working with international platforms (Upwork, Fiverr, Amazon). The Payoneer card is accepted at most Cancún terminals as a Mastercard. ATM withdrawal fee is around 2 USD per transaction.
Crypto is noticeably more widely used in Cancún than in Mexico on average. Several exchange offices in the Centro and Puerto Cancún areas handle USDT/BTC without KYC up to certain amounts. Some landlords and small service providers accept stablecoins directly. This is not a legal standard, but it is not a prosecuted practice either — Mexico de facto tolerates crypto as a means of settlement between private individuals.
Transfers from Russia in 2025–2026 remain difficult due to sanctions restrictions. Working channels include crypto exchanges, Wise via a third country (if you have an account in the EU or Georgia), and systems such as Zolotaya Korona through Latin American partners — but the last option is unreliable.

Payment cards in Cancún for Russians: everyday spending
A separate scenario is living in Cancún without a local bank account, using only foreign cards. UnionPay cards work at some HSBC and Santander ATMs — this is the main channel for those holding a Russian bank card. Visa and Mastercard issued by Russian banks have largely stopped working since 2022.
For Russian speakers, a map of Cancún most often means one of three scenarios:
- **Armenian or Kazakhstani Visa/Mastercard — accepted everywhere, can be opened remotely (Ameria Bank, Kaspi, etc.)
- Payoneer or Wise card — linked to a USD or EUR balance
- Local BBVA/Banorte debit card after opening an account with an RFC
Payments in Cancún are predominantly cashless in the hotel zone and shopping centres (La Isla, Las Américas), but markets, small cafés, and transport require cash in MXN.
Common mistakes
-
Going to the bank without an RFC. Most banks will refuse or offer only a restricted product without a taxpayer ID. Apply for your RFC through SAT in advance — it can take anywhere from a few days to a month.
-
Rely solely on a Russian card. Visa/Mastercard cards from Russian banks do not work in Mexico. Arriving without a backup option (Wise, Payoneer, UnionPay, or cash in USD) is a serious risk.
-
Withdrawing cash from tourist ATMs near shopping centres. Third-party (non-bank) ATMs charge a fee of 80–150 MXN per transaction and offer an unfavourable conversion rate.
-
Ignoring incoming transfer limits. Mexican banks are required to report transactions above certain thresholds to the CNBV. Regular large incoming transfers without a tax history can trigger a request to confirm the source of funds.
-
Trying to open an account on your very first day. Some branches in tourist areas serve only customers with a Mexican residential address (comprobante de domicilio). It is better to sign a rental agreement first — it serves as proof of address.
-
Confusing SPEI with SWIFT. SPEI is a domestic Mexican transfer in MXN — instant and free between local accounts. SWIFT is international, takes 1–3 days, and carries correspondent fees. For regular international income, using Wise as an intermediary buffer makes more sense.
What to choose and for whom
If you have settled in Cancún for the long term, start by obtaining your RFC and opening an account with BBVA (for its ATM network) or Santander (for international transfers). Use Wise as an intermediary wallet for incoming payments from abroad. If your status is still tourist — a Payoneer account or an Armenian/Kazakhstani Visa card will cover 90% of everyday needs. Crypto is a working tool for those dealing with unstable currency corridors, but it is not a substitute for a proper bank account.
