Transfers and parcels in Cancún
Transfers and courier deliveries in Cancún: how to send important items through fellow community members — documents, medicines, small parcels.
How to send a parcel to Cancún and arrange a handoff
Cancún is one of the fastest-growing hubs for Russian-speaking digital nomads in Latin America. Proximity to the US, visa-free entry for 180 days, and direct (or one-stop) routes from Russia and the CIS mean a constant flow of people back and forth. That flow is the backbone of all Cancún hand-delivery logistics: sending packages via a trusted person travelling that route is cheaper and more reliable than international courier services, and documents, medications, and small personal items are the most common cargo.

Hand-carry delivery as the primary channel: how it works
Hand-carry — an informal but well-established way to send items through a fellow traveler flying the same route. For Cancún this is especially relevant: there are no direct flights, and most connections go through Mexico City (MEX), Madrid (MAD), Istanbul (IST), or Dubai (DXB), so finding someone with the right itinerary is not difficult — the traffic is high enough.
The standard process:
- The sender finds a carrier through themed chats (primarily the SVOY Cancún city chat).
- Compensation is agreed in advance — typically 200–500 MXN for a small package up to 1–2 kg; larger loads are negotiated individually.
- Items are handed over in person before departure; the recipient meets the courier at Cancún International Airport (CUN) or in the city.
- No customs declarations are required for personal belongings within reasonable limits — the law allows importing personal items worth up to 500 USD duty-free.
Insider insight: courier hand-delivery in Cancún works not only along the Russia/CIS → Mexico axis, but also within Latin America — via Bogotá, Lima, and Buenos Aires. This is handy if you are waiting for items from friends already living in the region.
International parcel delivery services to Cancún
If an informal courier arrangement doesn’t work, you’ll need an official channel — and it’s worth understanding how Mexican customs actually operates.
| Method | Best for | Cost (approximate) | Timeline | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DHL / FedEx | Documents, urgent shipments | from 3,500 MXN from Russia | 5–10 business days | Operating, but trickier from Russia — transit via a third country required |
| Correos de México | Small parcels, non-sensitive goods | from 800 MXN | 3–6 weeks | High rate of customs delays; tracking is unreliable |
| CDEK (via partner) | Documents and personal items | from 5,000 MXN | 14–25 days | Operates via a hub in LatAm or Mexico City; verify route availability |
| Courier traveler (private) | Documents, medicine, personal items | 200–800 MXN | 1–14 days (subject to flight) | Most flexible option; requires trust and coordination |
| Freight agent in Mexico City | Oversized or high-value cargo | from 8,000 MXN | 3–5 weeks | Customs clearance billed separately; recipient’s RFC or CURP required |
Prices in the table are market reference points: government fees and third-party rates at the time of publication. These are not SVOY prices — our service fees are provided on request and in the ’Services’ section.
Note: Mexican customs (SAT / Aduana) periodically holds packages containing medicines, supplements, and electronics that lack proper documentation. If you are sending documents to Cancún via an official courier service, include an itemised list and copies.

Sending documents to Cancún: what you need to know
Documents — the most common request among those who have just relocated. Passports, notarized copies, medical certificates, registry extracts.
A few important details:
- Original documents are best handed over in person only — directly to the recipient. A courier service provides tracking, but if documents are held at customs or lost, they are practically impossible to recover within any reasonable timeframe.
- If the document needs an apostille before it is sent — arrange this in advance: an apostille cannot be placed on a Russian document in Mexico, but the Russian Consulate in Mexico City can certify certain copies.
- Medications — imported for personal use in quantities not exceeding a three-month course; prescription drugs require a prescription in Spanish or with a notarized translation. Keep this in mind when sending items via a carrier — the person carrying the bag bears legal responsibility for its contents.
Common mistakes
- Passing valuable documents through an unknown person without any verification. In SVOY chats it is standard practice to ask for reviews and verification — do not skip this step.
- Confusing the passenger exemption with the parcel threshold. $500 is the franquicia for passengers arriving in Mexico with luggage; it does not apply to postal shipments. Parcels have their own thresholds: up to $50 — duty-free, up to $117 — tariff-free, and only for goods from the US and Canada under USMCA. The tax in Mexico is called IVA (16%), not IGV — IGV is a Peruvian tax.
- Sending medication without documentation via an official postal service. SAT may seize the entire parcel, even if it contains nothing more than vitamin D.
- Relying on Correos de México as the main channel for urgent shipments — delivery times are unreliable, especially during peak tourist season (December–January, July).
- Not confirming your delivery address in advance. Addressing in Cancún works by SM (Super Manzana) and Manzana — without the full address, a courier will not find you.
- Forgetting about the EST time zone (UTC-5) when coordinating with a sender in Russia or Europe — a difference of 8–10 hours makes synchronization harder, especially for urgent transfers.
Who should choose what
For most tasks facing a nomad or relocator in Cancún, a community courier via a trusted chat is the optimal solution: cheaper, faster, and more reliable than official services for documents and medication. International couriers (DHL, FedEx) are justified when you need legally verifiable tracking or insured cargo. Large shipments should only go through a freight agent with a customs broker in Mexico City. The golden rule: do not confuse ’convenient’ with ’safe’ — especially when original documents are involved.
