The Vancouver job market: what to know before you move
Vancouver is one of the few cities in North America where high tech-sector salaries combine with real immigration pathways for professionals without a US green card. That is precisely why working in Vancouver has become a practical topic rather than an abstract one: thousands of Russian-speaking professionals from IT, healthcare, construction, and finance are already working in Greater Vancouver — in Richmond, Burnaby, and North Vancouver. But the market here is competitive and has its own rules. Below is what actually matters.

Top sectors and salaries in Vancouver
Vancouver is Canada’s second most important tech hub after Toronto. Major offices of Amazon, Microsoft, Electronic Arts, Hootsuite, and Slack (now Salesforce) are based here, alongside hundreds of startups and game development studios. Beyond IT, steady demand persists in construction, healthcare, and the financial sector.
**Realistic salary expectations for 2026:
| Position | Sector | Salary (CAD/year) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Junior Developer | IT | from 70,000 | Market has cooled — competition is high |
| Senior Developer | IT | 120,000–160,000 | 5+ years of experience + portfolio |
| Project Manager (construction) | Construction | 85,000–110,000 | PMP or Red Seal certification required |
| Registered Nurse | Healthcare | 80,000–100,000 | NCLEX + CRNBC required |
| Financial Analyst | Finance | 75,000–105,000 | CFA/CPA speeds up hiring |
| Trades (electrician, plumber) | Construction | 70,000–95,000 | Labour shortage — quick hiring |
Insider: In skilled trades (plumbing, electrical, mechanical) the shortage of specialists is noticeably more acute than in IT — especially since 2023. If you hold a recognised trade qualification, the path to employment here is shorter than in software development.
Jobs in Vancouver: where to look and how the market works
Jobs in Vancouver are posted primarily on Indeed.ca, LinkedIn, Glassdoor, and WorkBC (the provincial government portal). For tech roles, Levels.fyi (for understanding market salaries) and direct company applications are also relevant.
A few details that speed up the process:
- Internal referrals work in Vancouver. The Russian-speaking communities in Richmond and Burnaby are tight-knit — a recommendation from an acquaintance genuinely shortens the path to an interview.
- WorkBC Centres — free government career centres. They help with adapting your CV to the Canadian format, interview preparation, and foreign credential recognition. Few newcomers take advantage of this, which is a missed opportunity.
- The Canadian résumé format differs from the Russian one: no photo, no age, no marital status. A résumé longer than one page for a junior specialist is an immediate red flag for recruiters.
- Most corporate positions require either a Work Permit or PR (permanent residency). Without one of these, most large employers won’t even consider a candidate.

The employment immigration route: BC PNP and Work Permit
For those looking not just for temporary work but for a path to PR, the BC Provincial Nominee Program (BC PNP) remains the main provincial tool — but as of April 2026, it works quite differently from what most guides describe.
BC PNP Tech Pilot is closed — dedicated draws for tech occupations are no longer held (the last one took place in December 2024). Streams for international graduates and Entry Level and Semi-Skilled workers have also been closed. From April 23, 2026, the province issues invitations under three priorities only:
- Care — healthcare and personal care: 31 medical professions (doctors, nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists, paramedics, care aides), plus early childhood educators, French-language K–12 teachers, and veterinarians.
- Build — nine construction trades (welders, electricians, plumbers, carpenters, HVAC mechanics) with a valid SkilledTradesBC certificate.
- Innovate — for highly skilled, well-paid roles with a demonstrable economic impact. IT specialists can qualify, but there is no longer a dedicated fast-track channel for the tech sector.
The Skilled Worker and Health Authority streams have been retained, but selection has become targeted: meeting the criteria no longer guarantees an invitation. The province’s 2026 quota is 5,254 nominations, with 35% reserved for candidates outside Greater Vancouver.
The practical takeaway for Russian speakers: if you work in healthcare or the construction trades, your chances right now are objectively better than those of the average developer. If you’re in IT — don’t build your plan around BC PNP: look at federal category-based Express Entry draws (STEM, French language) and other provinces.
Typical pathway: job offer from an employer → Work Permit (LMIA or LMIA-exempt) → work in Vancouver → BC PNP nomination → PR through Express Entry.
Insider: Some employers in Vancouver are willing to sponsor a Work Permit via LMIA but don’t always state this publicly. This is especially true of construction companies and healthcare providers. Raising the question of sponsorship directly during hiring negotiations is perfectly acceptable — the key is to ask after the employer has shown genuine interest.
How to start a business in Vancouver
Starting a business in Vancouver is technically straightforward: company registration through the BC Registry portal takes as little as one day and costs around CAD 350–450 for a provincial Incorporation.
Main formats:
- Sole Proprietorship — the simplest structure, with no personal asset protection. Works for freelancers and small consulting practices.
- BC Corporation is the most common business structure. It offers asset protection and tax flexibility. The corporate income tax rate in BC for small businesses is 11% (on the first CAD 500,000 of active income under the Small Business Deduction).
- Federal Corporation — if you plan to operate outside BC or pursue federal contracts.
Worth keeping in mind: GST/HST registration is mandatory once annual income exceeds CAD 30,000. Payroll in Canada is fairly complex — most small businesses bring in an accounting service like Bench or a local CPA from year one.
An important note for recent arrivals: registering a business does not grant the right to work and does not substitute immigration status. Business immigration in BC follows a separate stream — Entrepreneur Immigration under BC PNP.
Common mistakes
- Ignoring Work Authorization status. Applying for jobs without a valid Work Permit or PR is a waste of time. Most large employers automatically screen out candidates who don’t have the right to work in Canada.
- Copying a Russian-style CV format. A photo, a two-page list of every skill, personal details like marital status — all of this reduces your chances before you even reach the interview stage.
- Overestimating starting salaries. Senior-level pay in Vancouver is real, but it requires a verified local or internationally recognised portfolio. The first 6–12 months after relocating are a period of adjustment and building local connections.
- Treating company incorporation as an immigration shortcut. A BC Corporation does not grant residency. Without a proper immigration pathway, the business exists legally, but the owner has no right to live or work in Canada.
- Underestimating the cost of living when evaluating a job offer. A salary of CAD 80,000 in Vancouver is not the same as CAD 80,000 in Calgary. Rent, provincial income tax (BC Income Tax), and parking or transit costs eat into the difference considerably.
- Ignoring free resources. WorkBC Centres, Settlement Services, immigrant professional networks — all of these genuinely work, but newly arrived professionals often assume these services aren’t meant for them.
What works for whom
Vancouver is a strong choice for mid- and senior-level IT specialists who are ready for a competitive market and understand that, after the BC PNP reform, their immigration pathway runs more through federal Express Entry than through the province. For trades professionals with recognised qualifications, the market is currently softer than it looks from the outside. For entrepreneurs, the province is open, but business immigration requires separate planning and a genuine business plan with local investment. What works in Vancouver: a specific specialisation, local connections, and the understanding that status and employment are two parallel tasks to be solved simultaneously.
