Banks and transfers in Valencia

Finances in Valencia: where to open an account, which banks are foreigner-friendly, and how to transfer money across borders.

Banks and transfers in Valencia: how to open an account and manage your money in 2026

Banking is one of the first things anyone who moves to Valencia has to deal with. Without an account it is impossible to rent a flat, set up utilities, or receive a salary from a Spanish employer. At the same time, the logic of the local banking system differs noticeably from what people relocating from Russia, Ukraine, or Belarus are used to. We cover everything: from choosing a bank to workable schemes for international transfers.

Opening an account in Valencia: with and without NIE

Most transactions in Spain require a NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero) — the foreigner identification number. It is what unlocks access to a standard current account (cuenta corriente).

The largest Spanish banks with branches throughout Valencia:

  • Sabadell — historically welcoming to foreigners, with English-speaking managers; popular among relocating expats
  • CaixaBank — Spain’s largest retail bank, an extensive ATM network, and a solid mobile app
  • Santander — an international structure, well suited for those working with European or Latin American counterparts

Standard document package for opening an account with an NIE:

  • valid foreign passport
  • original NIE (or TIE — resident card)
  • proof of address in Spain (contrato de alquiler, padrón, or a utility bill)

**Without an NIE you can open a non-resident account — cuenta de no residente. The same three banks offer this, but functionality is limited: you generally cannot set up direct debit (domiciliación), which prevents you from paying rent and utilities through the account.

Insider note: in certain branches of Sabadell and CaixaBank in central Valencia neighbourhoods (Russafa, El Carmen), managers are used to a steady flow of foreigners and tend to open accounts faster. In peripheral branches you may be asked to book an appointment in advance and bring additional documents — in practice this can stretch the process by one to two weeks.

Online banks and cards for digital nomads

Digital banks are the first choice for most digital nomads and those who arrived recently and have not yet obtained an NIE.

  • N26 is a German neobank: online registration with a passport, a European IBAN, and a free basic plan. Suitable for receiving payments and everyday expenses.
  • Revolut — a multi-currency wallet with convenient conversion, peer-to-peer transfers, and spending controls. It holds a banking licence in Spain, which matters for deposit protection.
  • Wise — not a bank in the full sense, but provides a European IBAN and highly competitive conversion rates. Popular among those who earn income in multiple currencies.

Worth knowing: neither N26 nor Revolut replaces a full Spanish bank account when renting an apartment or taking out insurance. Most landlords and utility providers require a Spanish IBAN and domiciliación — which is only possible through a local bank.

Transfers to and from Russia: the real picture

Since 2022, SWIFT transfers from Spain to Russia have been effectively blocked — Spanish banks do not process such transactions. This creates a real problem for those supporting relatives or receiving money from Russia.

Workable arrangements in 2026:

  • UnionPay cards — cards issued by Russian banks on UnionPay are in some cases accepted at Spanish ATMs, but this is becoming an increasingly unreliable option
  • **Crypto exchanges — a popular tool, especially USDT via P2P platforms; requires an understanding of the risks and counterparty verification
  • Intermediaries and money transfer services — certain specialised operators (for example, those working through third countries such as Armenia, Georgia, or the UAE) provide an EUR → RUB chain
  • Wise / Remitly — transfers to Ukraine via these services work reliably; options for Russia are limited

Insider insight: within Valencia’s Russian-speaking community (particularly in Russafa and Benimaclet), trusted intermediaries can often be found through local chats — frequently faster and cheaper than official channels, though it does require trusting a specific individual.

Common mistakes

  1. Relying on an online-only bank and assuming it is enough. N26 or Revolut will not work for setting up rent payments and utilities — you will end up having to find a traditional bank in a hurry.

  2. Walking into the nearest branch without an appointment. Queues at major banks in Valencia are real, and some operations are only possible with a prior booking through the app or website. Expect to lose half a day.

  3. Not clarifying the account type when opening one. A cuenta de no residente and a regular current account are different products with different features. Some managers default to opening a non-resident account if you haven’t yet received your TIE.

  4. Attempting to transfer money to Russia via standard SWIFT without checking current restrictions. Such attempts not only fail, but can result in the transaction being frozen and additional questions from the bank’s compliance team.

  5. Ignoring service fees. Many plans are ’free’ provided you top up regularly or maintain a minimum balance (typically 1,000–3,000 €). If that condition is not met, a monthly fee kicks in.

  6. Using a Russian bank card as your primary financial tool. Acceptance of such cards is unstable and can stop without warning — it is better to treat it as a backup rather than a working instrument.

Bottom line: what to choose

If you are relocating to Valencia for the long term — open an account with Sabadell or CaixaBank as soon as you receive your NIE, and use Revolut or Wise in parallel for currency conversion and international payments. For a digital nomad on a short stay, N26 plus Wise is sufficient. The question of transfers to Russia is handled through trusted community channels and crypto tools — there is no universal official route in 2026.
