Schools and children in Madrid

Children and schools in Madrid: what options are available to Russian-speaking families, how much it costs and how to apply.

How education for children works in Madrid

Choosing a school is one of the first decisions that determines the quality of a family’s relocation. In Madrid, the education system has three tiers: state, concertado (semi-state), and private. Each format has its own enrollment rules, language of instruction, and hidden costs that official sources rarely mention.

Children’s education in Madrid comes down to three key decisions: language of instruction, type of funding, and neighborhood. The last one is critical — enrollment in a state school is tied to the padrón municipal (registered address), and your choice of apartment effectively determines which school your child will attend.

Public and concertada schools: free, but with their own logic

State schools in Madrid are free for all children, including foreign nationals without Spanish citizenship. The right to enrol arises from the moment of registration in the municipal register (empadronamiento). Age — from 3 years (education is compulsory from age 6, but most families enrol children from age 3).

Concerted schools — privately managed but state-subsidised. Formally free, but in practice schools request ’voluntary contributions’ of €30 to €150/month for materials, extracurricular activities, and school funds. Declining is technically possible, but socially awkward.

Key insider note: zoning in Madrid is strictly enforced. If you are renting in Salamanca or Chamartín and have a specific school in mind, make sure your address falls within its catchment zone before signing the lease. Zones can be checked via the educamadrid.org portal.

Language immersion: most state schools in Madrid follow the bilingual education program (Spanish + English) introduced by the Community of Madrid. Around 30% of subjects are taught in English. For children with no Spanish, aulas de enlace — bridging classes lasting up to 9 months — provide basic Spanish instruction separately.

International and private schools: from €5,000 per year

For families for whom academic continuity or English-language instruction matters, Madrid offers a wide selection of international schools.

School / typeLanguage of instructionCost per yearBest for
British Council School (Pozuelo)English (British curriculum)from €14,000Families planning to return to the UK or move on elsewhere
American School of MadridEnglish (American curriculum)from €18,000Focused on US college admissions
Liceo EuropeoSpanish + English trackfrom €8,000Integration + European diploma
International IB schools (various)English / Spanishfrom €10,000Flexibility, recognised across the EU and beyond
Private Spanish (laico/religioso)Spanishfrom €5,000Full integration, lower language barrier

Insider insight: many international schools in Madrid charge a registration fee (€500–€1,500) when you apply — non-refundable. If you are applying to several schools simultaneously, budget for this in advance. Waiting lists at top schools run from one to two years, especially at British Council schools.

Russian schools and kindergartens in Madrid

Russian Saturday school is an informal yet well-established institution. Several Russian-language Saturday schools operate in Madrid, where children study Russian language, literature, and mathematics following the Russian curriculum. Classes meet once a week and are supplementary — not a substitute for mainstream schooling.

The best-known option is the Russian School in Madrid (operating with the support of diaspora organisations). Fees are nominal — from €50–€80/month. Beyond classes, it serves as an entry point into the Russian-speaking community: word spreads here about tutors, doctors, and notaries.

Kindergartens (guarderías / escuelas infantiles) for children aged 0–3 are mostly fee-paying. Municipal places exist but are scarce and highly competitive. Private kindergartens in Madrid cost €400–€800/month depending on the neighbourhood — closer to the upper end in Chamartín and Salamanca, and to the lower end in Vallecas or Carabanchel.

Russian-speaking nannies and private childcare providers are sought through diaspora chats and platforms such as Canguro.es and Sitly. The hourly rate for a native-speaker caregiver is €12–€18/hour.

Common mistakes

  1. Registering on the empadronamiento at one address and then trying to enrol a child in a school in a different district. Administrators cross-check the addresses — enrolment will be refused or revoked after the fact.

  2. They expect quick enrollment in an international school with no waiting list. Some schools require registration 12–18 months before the academic year begins.

  3. Underestimating the hidden costs of concerted schools. A “free” school can cost €100–€120/month once you factor in fees, canteen, bus, and extracurricular activities.

  4. Overlooking aulas de enlace and expecting immediate integration. The transition class is a resource, not a stigma. Skipping it in hopes of throwing a child straight into a Spanish-language environment often leads to serious academic stress in the first year.

  5. Underestimating the importance of neighbourhood when choosing an apartment. Renting in Madrid without checking which schools fall within the zone is a systemic mistake that proves costly when you need to move.

  6. Mistaking a Russian Saturday school for a fully accredited programme. Diplomas from Russian Saturday schools in Spain have no legal standing — they are a supplement, not a substitute for mainstream education.

What works for whom

If the family is relocating long-term and wants full integration, a state bilingual school in a good neighbourhood (Chamartín, Salamanca, Moncloa) delivers strong results at zero direct cost. Pair it with a Russian Saturday school to maintain the language.

If the horizon is 2–4 years or a further move is planned, an international school with an IB or British curriculum preserves the child’s academic mobility. Budget from €10,000–€18,000/year plus additional fees.

Kindergarten in Madrid is almost always fee-paying and private: budget €400–€700/month as a baseline expense from the moment you arrive.

Formats, fees, and enrolment

School in Madrid starts with the neighbourhood

The neighbourhood where you rent will determine your school: in some areas a place at a state school is assigned directly tied to the registered address; in some cases it all comes down to the morning commute. We’ll find housing with an eye on to the school and will prepare your child’s documents from Russia, Belarus, or Ukraine — with apostille and sworn translation. Both take weeks, and application windows are short.
