Russian-speaking lawyers in Madrid
An hour with a lawyer in Madrid costs €120–300; full residence permit support — €1,800–3,500; a property transaction — €1,200–3,000 or around 1% of the amount. Verify a licence by the colegiado number in ICAM. If your income is below €16,800 per year, a courtroom lawyer may be free of charge under justicia gratuita.
When you really do need a lawyer in Madrid
Madrid is Spain’s capital and business hub, and Russian speakers most often turn to a lawyer in four situations: property purchase, residence permit, business setup, and appealing rejections. The largest bar association in Europe (ICAM) operates here, but the abundance of options makes it easy to fall into the hands of a gestor posing as a lawyer.
Price guide: one hour with a lawyer in Madrid — €120–300 (higher than other regions), full residence permit support — €1,800–3,500, the law allows 1 month to appeal a refusal (recurso).

What matters specifically for Russian speakers from the CIS
This is what Spanish websites will never tell you, yet it determines everything:
- Source of funds (origin of funds). When buying property, the bank and notary will ask where the money comes from. Funds from Russia face serious scrutiny — a transparent chain of documentation is required, and banks frequently refuse. A lawyer helps build the evidentiary file and process the payment legally.
- How to move money. Direct SWIFT transfers from Russia are restricted — use third countries, USDT, or an international transfer service. Plan this out before paying a deposit.
- CIS documents. Criminal record certificates, diplomas, and civil records from Russia, Belarus, or Ukraine are only accepted with an apostille and a sworn translation (traductor jurado) — obtainable remotely.
- **Russian / Belarusian passport. Renewing a foreign passport from abroad is difficult, so a residence permit is a way to legalise your stay and live without stress — not just a ’nice bonus.’
Real estate lawyer in Madrid: the tax advantage of the capital
The main insight that can save tens of thousands of euros: in Madrid the property transfer tax (ITP) is 6%, while Catalonia has applied a progressive scale since 27 June 2025 — from 10% to 13% depending on the property price. Madrid has also abolished the wealth tax (impuesto de patrimonio) — a decisive factor for Golden Visa investors. Before signing, a lawyer verifies:
- nota simple — owner, mortgages, liens and encumbrances;
- outstanding IBI debt and comunidad fees that legally transfer to the new owner;
- whether a valid cédula de habitabilidad exists and whether any renovations are legally authorized;
- so that the deposit in the contrato de arras (10%) is refundable (arras penitenciales).
Premium neighborhoods — Salamanca, Chamberí, Chamartín; budget an additional 10–12% on top of the purchase price for taxes, notary fees, and land registry.

Immigration lawyer in Madrid: residence permits and business
Most residence permit rejections stem not from ’policy’ but from technical errors in the file. An immigration lawyer (abogado de extranjería) handles the entire process:
- property transaction support (Madrid is popular with investors following the abolition of the wealth tax — but purchasing property no longer grants a residence permit: the Golden Visa was abolished on 3 April 2025);
- Digital Nomad Visa — for remote workers with an income of at least €2,849/month;
- Arraigo (social, labour, family) — legalisation for those already in the country;
- registering as autónomo or forming an SL company for business.
A rejection came in — you have just one month to file a recurso de reposición; miss the deadline and you start the entire application from scratch.
Residence permit grounds are covered at the country level, not by city — we have compiled the requirements, amounts, and document checklists separately: Residence permit in Spain: all grounds, Non-lucrative residence permit (no lucrativa), family reunification, and student visa. This page covers only what is specific to Madrid: the practices of the local Oficina de Extranjería, processing times, and local prices.

Free legal aid in Madrid: who qualifies for justicia gratuita
Before you pay, check whether you are entitled to a free lawyer. The right to justicia gratuita is established by Ley 1/1996, and the threshold is calculated against the IPREM, which in 2026 is frozen at €600/month (€8,400/year in 14 payments). The gross income of the entire household is assessed:
- **up to €16,800/year — single person (2 IPREM);
- **up to €21,000/year — family of fewer than 4 (2.5 IPREM);
- **up to €25,200/year — family of 4 or more, or large families (3 IPREM).
The key point almost never mentioned in Russian-language sources: the law uses the phrase «los extranjeros que se encuentren en España» — ’foreigners present in Spain.’ There is no requirement of legal residency: without a residence permit, with an expired visa, or in the middle of a legalization process — the right is preserved as long as income is below the threshold.
What it covers: a lawyer and procurador in court, court fees, expert reports, publications, plus an 80% discount on notary and registry fees.
What it does NOT cover: the residence permit application itself — that is an administrative procedure, not a court matter. However, judicial appeal of a refusal (recurso contencioso-administrativo) is a court matter and is covered by justicia gratuita. The law separately lists cases involving denial of entry, return, deportation, and asylum — but income is still assessed there too; «free for everyone» does not exist.
**Where to go: Servicio de Orientación Jurídica (SOJ) at the bar association — in Madrid that is ICAM — Ilustre Colegio de la Abogacía de Madrid.
Let’s be honest: most people reading this page earn more than €16,800 a year and will not qualify for justicia gratuita. Still, it’s worth knowing the threshold — there’s no reason to pay for something you’re entitled to for free.
A Russian-speaking lawyer in Madrid: how to choose and avoid pitfalls
- verify the colegiado number with the Ilustre Colegio de Abogados de Madrid (ICAM) — the largest bar association in Europe;
- a Russian-speaking specialist saves on interpreters and misunderstandings;
- set out the scope and cost of work in a contract (hoja de encargo) before payment;
- avoid gestorías that take on litigation — it is outside their remit.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a Russian-speaking lawyer cost in Madrid?
Hourly rate — €120–300. Full residence permit support — €1,800–3,500 plus government fees. Real estate transaction support — €1,200–3,000 or around 1% of the deal value. Initial consultation with SVOY lawyers — free.
How to verify that a lawyer in Madrid is legitimate?
Every practicing lawyer in Spain has a colegiado number. Verify it with the ICAM (Ilustre Colegio de la Abogacía de Madrid). And confirm the scope of work and price in a written agreement (hoja de encargo) before paying — without it, there will be nothing to dispute.
What to do if your Spanish residence permit is denied?
Deadlines run from the date of notification. Recurso de reposición — 1 month, filed with the same authority, and it is optional. Recurso contencioso-administrativo — 2 months, filed in court, and can be submitted immediately. If the refusal is procedural (a missing document, an expired certificate), it is often faster and cheaper to reapply from scratch.
Who is entitled to a free lawyer in Spain?
The right to justicia gratuita (Ley 1/1996) applies when annual income does not exceed €16,800 for a single person, €21,000 for a family of fewer than 4, and €25,200 for a family of 4 or more — that is 2 / 2.5 / 3 IPREM, and the IPREM is frozen at €600 per month in 2026. The key point: the law refers to ’foreigners present in Spain’ and does not require legal status. It covers court proceedings, but not residence permit applications.
Do you need a lawyer when buying property in Madrid?
Legally, no — only a notary is required. But a lawyer reviews the nota simple, outstanding IBI and community fees, and the deposit terms in the contrato de arras before the transaction. Madrid offers a tax advantage on purchases, and the difference more than covers the cost of legal support.
