When you need a solicitor in Hong Kong
Hong Kong is the classic base for a trading company and China settlements: common law, straightforward incorporation. But since 2022 the main challenge for Russian speakers has been banking. A lawyer (solicitor) is needed for: company incorporation, banking and compliance, contracts and disputes.
Typical rates: solicitor — $200–450/hr. General questions are answered free of charge, and a specialist will personally review your case.

What matters specifically for Russian speakers from the CIS
The main headache in Hong Kong is not the company — it’s the bank:
- HK Ltd is easy and cheap to open, but getting a bank account as a Russian national is difficult: banks have tightened compliance and close accounts without substance. Workable options include an account with local presence, licensed payment systems, a link to a mainland account and USDT, plus international transfers.
- Territorial taxation makes Hong Kong attractive (see accounting), but the benefit is lost without a working bank account.
- Contracts — common law, in English, with arbitration in Hong Kong.
- CIS documents — apostille/legalization and translation; can be arranged remotely.
A company in Hong Kong
- HK Limited — quick to set up, inexpensive, and prestigious for trade with China;
- a local secretary and registered address are required; annual audit is mandatory;
- A solicitor or company secretarial firm handles registration and renewal.

Banking and compliance — the bottleneck
- budget time and substance (genuine activity, contracts, justification);
- an alternative to a bank — licensed payment providers;
- for payments to China — an HK company paired with a mainland partner is the go-to setup.
How to choose
- hire a solicitor or consultant with experience serving CIS clients and navigating banking;
- prepare your compliance documents in advance;
- agree on services and fees.
