Work and business in Hong Kong
Work and income in Hong Kong: which fields are genuinely hiring Russian speakers, what the visa situation looks like and how to start your own business.
Why Hong Kong is more than just an ’Asian offshore’
Hong Kong holds its place as one of the world’s three main financial hubs — alongside New York and London. For a Russian-speaking professional or entrepreneur, this translates into concrete opportunities: access to Asian markets, relatively transparent corporate law of British origin, and — crucially — no tax on income from foreign sources. The territorial tax system applies to both individuals and companies. If your business or employment generates income outside Hong Kong, it is not subject to local profit tax.
That said, the job market is tough, competitive, and English-language. Coming here just to ’give it a try’ won’t work: an Employment Visa is issued only for a specific employer, and without a job offer the process cannot even begin.

The job market: vacancies in Hong Kong for Russian-speaking professionals
Demand for foreign specialists is concentrated in a few sectors:
- Finance and trading — investment banks (HSBC, Goldman Sachs, UBS), hedge funds, brokers, and private banking. Russian-speaking qualified traders and analysts find strong opportunities here, especially with prior experience at European or Russian firms.
- Law — international corporate law, M&A, arbitration. Qualification recognised in Hong Kong or via conversion exams required.
- Tech and fintech — development, data science, product management. Local startups and divisions of global companies are actively hiring.
- Trade and logistics — Hong Kong remains the largest transit hub for Chinese goods. Procurement and foreign trade managers are in demand.
The key resource for job hunting is JobsDB (jobsdb.com), LinkedIn, and specialist agencies such as Michael Page, Robert Walters, and Hays. Hong Kong vacancies are almost never posted on Russian-language job boards — active searching happens entirely through English-language LinkedIn.
Salaries in Hong Kong: realistic benchmarks for 2026
| Position | Level | Salary (HKD/month) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Junior analyst (finance) | Entry | 25,000–35,000 | Before MPF deductions |
| Senior Financial Analyst | Mid | 60,000–100,000 | Bonus up to 30–50% annually |
| IT developer (backend, 3+ years) | Mid | 40,000–70,000 | Varies by stack |
| Lawyer (corporate law) | Senior | 80,000–150,000+ | Recognised qualification required |
| Product Manager (tech/fintech) | Mid-Senior | 50 000–90 000 | |
| Logistics / foreign trade manager | Mid | 30,000–50,000 |
MPF (Mandatory Provident Fund) contributions are mandatory — 5% from the employee (the employer pays another 5%). Income tax (Salaries Tax) is progressive, with a maximum effective rate of around 15%, which is exceptionally low by international standards.
Employment Visa: how to obtain the right to work in Hong Kong
For most Russians, the only path to legal employment in Hong Kong is the Employment Visa, applied for jointly by the employer and candidate at the Immigration Department. The visa is not issued for a future job search — a signed offer is required.
Key requirements:
- Relevant qualifications (degree, professional certificates)
- A position that ’cannot be filled by a local specialist’ is a formal criterion, and the employer must substantiate this
- Competitive, market-rate salary
Processing time is typically 4–8 weeks. An Employment Visa is issued for the duration of the contract — usually 1–2 years — with the option to renew. After 7 years of continuous residence, you may apply for Right of Abode (permanent residency).
Insider tip: professionals arriving under the IANG scheme (graduates of Hong Kong universities) or QMAS (a points-based quality migrant admission scheme) receive status without needing a job offer upfront. QMAS is a realistic option for experienced finance professionals, IT specialists, and doctors with an international track record.

Starting a business in Hong Kong: what you need to know
Registering a company in Hong Kong is one of the fastest processes in the world. A Private Limited Company (Ltd.) is incorporated in 1–3 business days through the Companies Registry, with a government fee of around 1,720 HKD. Requirements are minimal: one individual director (any nationality), one shareholder, and a registered address in Hong Kong.
What a working business actually requires:
- Registered address — a local legal address (from 500 HKD/month at company secretarial firms)
- Company secretary — required by law; typically outsourced (from 3,000–5,000 HKD/year).
- Business Registration Certificate — annual fee of 2,000 HKD + an additional levy depending on turnover
Profits Tax: the first 2 million HKD of profit is taxed at 8.25%, anything above that at 16.5%. If profit is generated outside Hong Kong, the territorial principle applies — it may be fully exempt from tax (an offshore claim must be obtained).
The most pressing practical challenge for Russian-speaking entrepreneurs in 2025–2026 is opening a corporate bank account. Major banks (HSBC, Standard Chartered, Hang Seng) require in-person visits, years of business history, and demonstrable ties to Hong Kong. The realistic starting point is neobanks and fintech platforms: Airwallex, Statrys, Currenxie — all built for international businesses and fully online. Accounts there open in 3–10 business days.
Common mistakes
-
Arriving without a job offer and hoping to find work on the ground. An Employment Visa is not issued without a signed contract. A tourist visa carries no right to work, and breaching your immigration status results in an entry ban.
-
Underestimating the cost of living when evaluating a salary. A salary of 40,000 HKD, with rent starting at 15,000–20,000 HKD for a one-bedroom in a convenient area, leaves a very modest lifestyle.
-
Registering a company and assuming that is enough. Without a real bank account, Business Registration, and a local secretary, the company exists on paper only. Getting operations up and running takes 1–3 months.
-
Expecting full tax exemption without filing an offshore claim. The territorial principle does not apply automatically: you must submit a justified application to the Inland Revenue Department and prove that profits were earned outside Hong Kong. Without this, Profits Tax is assessed on your entire turnover.
-
Ignoring annual reporting requirements. Hong Kong companies must submit audited financial statements every year, even with zero activity. The cost of an audit for a small business starts at 8,000–15,000 HKD/year. This is a mandatory expense that is often overlooked when planning.
-
Overestimating the Russian-speaking diaspora as a hiring network. The community is active but small. Professional opportunities open up through English-language connections, not Russian-language chats.
Who Hong Kong makes sense for, and when
For a salaried specialist: realistic if you have 5+ years of experience in finance, tech, or law, fluent English, and a readiness to compete in a global market. Salaries are high, the tax burden is minimal by global standards, and the career track is international.
For entrepreneurs: Hong Kong works as an operational base for Asia trade, fintech projects, and international business structuring. Territorial taxation is a real advantage when structured correctly. The main barrier today is banking — budget both time and money to resolve it before you launch.
