Lawyers in Berlin

When a Berlin eally need a licensed lawyer, what services cost, and how not to lose money on a transaction or a residence permit rejection.

When you need a lawyer in Berlin

Berlin is a city of renters, freelancers, and startups, so Russian speakers most often turn to a lawyer (Rechtsanwalt) in four situations: tenancy disputes with landlords (Mietrecht), residence permits and Blue Card, employment conflicts, and property purchases.

Price reference: an initial consultation (Erstberatung) is capped by law at €190 + VAT, an hour of legal advice — €150–350; for disputes, fees are often calculated under the RVG tariff based on the value of the claim.

What matters specifically for Russian speakers from the CIS

  • Source of funds (Herkunftsnachweis). German banks scrutinise the origin of funds closely, especially those coming from Russia. Without a transparent paper trail, they will refuse to open an account or grant a mortgage — a lawyer helps prepare the necessary documentation.
  • How to move money. SWIFT from Russia is restricted; people use third countries, USDT, and international transfer services.
  • CIS documents. For a residence permit and Anmeldung, certificates and diplomas from Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine must have an apostille and certified translation (vereidigter Übersetzer) — can be arranged remotely.
  • **Russian / Belarusian passport. Renewing a foreign passport from abroad is difficult — a legal Aufenthaltstitel becomes a priority; a lawyer will identify the right grounds.

Rental law (Mietrecht): where the law actually protects you

Berlin is a tenant’s paradise — but also a minefield of potential disputes. Key things to know:

  • deposit (Kaution) — maximum 3 ’cold’ rents (Kaltmiete), held in a separate account;
  • Mietpreisbremse applies — a cap on rent relative to the Mietspiegel;
  • everything requires an address registration (Anmeldung) — without it you cannot open a bank account or obtain any official status;
  • unlawful extra charges and evictions can be contested — a Mietrecht lawyer often pays for themselves in a single dispute.

Residence permits, Blue Card and self-employment

An immigration lawyer (Aufenthaltsrecht) handles:

  • Blue Card (Blaue Karte EU) — salary threshold around €45,300 (lower for shortage occupations, ~€41,000);
  • §21 — visa for the self-employed and freelancers (Berlin is a hub for freelancers);
  • Niederlassungserlaubnis — permanent residence permit;
  • family reunification, renewals, and appeals against refusals.

How much a lawyer costs and how to choose one

  • Erstberatung — up to €190 + VAT by law;
  • hourly rate — €150–350; dispute work is billed under the RVG scale;
  • low-income clients may qualify for state-funded legal aid — Beratungshilfe / Prozesskostenhilfe;
  • verify the lawyer’s registration with the Rechtsanwaltskammer Berlin;
  • hire a Russian-speaking specialist in the relevant field (Miet-, Aufenthalts-, or Arbeitsrecht).
