Schools and children in Barcelona
Children and schools in Barcelona: what options are available to Russian-speaking families, how much it costs and how to apply.
The education system in Barcelona: what to know before you move
Choosing a school is one of the first decisions a family makes when relocating. In Barcelona it is more complex than it appears: three types of schools operate in parallel, with two languages of instruction — Spanish and Catalan — and neither of them is Russian. That said, the state system genuinely works, international schools award diplomas recognized worldwide, and the Russian school in Barcelona is a living community rather than a formality. It is worth understanding how the system works before submitting your residence permit application.

Public and semi-public schools: free, but in Catalan
**State schools (colegios públicos) in Barcelona are free for all children with a residence permit or emigration status — including children of Digital Nomad Visa holders and other residence permit types. Lunch and textbooks are paid separately; budget around €500–900 per year for all associated costs.
A key point that is often overlooked: the primary language of instruction in Catalan state schools is Catalan, not Spanish. Spanish is taught as a subject, but history, mathematics, and science classes are conducted in Catalan. For a child arriving without knowledge of the language, this means a double adjustment.
There are also concertadas — semi-state schools partially funded by the government. Tuition runs €100–400/month, and programs vary. Some teach primarily in Spanish, making them a useful alternative for families planning to relocate to another region of Spain.
State school enrolment goes through the Educació portal of the Catalan government. The catchment-area system is real: a school is assigned based on your registered address (empadronamiento). Without registration, there is no place at the nearest school.
International schools in Barcelona: costs, languages, neighbourhoods
Children’s education in Barcelona through an international school is the choice of families who plan to stay mobile or are aiming for an English-language university education. Costs range from €5,000 to €20,000 per year depending on the programme and the school’s reputation.
A few benchmarks:
- IB (International Baccalaureate) — the most widely recognised programme for applications to European and American universities. Available at schools in Pedralbes, Sarrià, and Esplugues de Llobregat.
- British curriculum — a structure that children with a Russian mathematical school background tend to adapt to more easily.
- American curriculum — less common; relevant if a move to the US is possible.
An insider detail: the majority of top international schools are located not in the centre but in the Sarrià-Sant Gervasi and Les Corts districts — and in the suburbs (Esplugues, Sant Cugat). Families renting in Eixample for convenience often find themselves spending 40–60 minutes getting to school. The ’school first, then housing’ approach is exactly the right order of priorities.
| School type | Language of instruction | Cost/year | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public (pública) | Catalan | Free (+€500–900) | Long-term integration, budget-friendly |
| State-subsidised (concertada) | Spanish / Catalan | €1,200–4,800 | A compromise between price and quality |
| International (IB / British) | English | €5,000–20,000 | Mobility, expats |
| Russian weekend school | Russian | €50–150/month | Language support, supplementary |

Kindergartens in Barcelona and Russian-language schooling: the practicalities
Kindergartens in Barcelona are divided into two stages: llar d'infants (0–3 years) and parvulari (3–6 years). The first stage is private or municipal with a waiting list — municipal cost is €200–500/month, private up to €800. From age 3, state pre-school education is free and part of the primaria system.
For enrolment in a municipal kindergarten, empadronamiento — local registration — is required. The waiting list for nurseries (ages 0–3) is real: you need to submit your application 6–12 months before your desired start date.
Russian schools in Barcelona run on a weekend format. They are not an alternative to mainstream school but a supplement: Russian language, literature, and math following the Russian curriculum. Several centers operate consistently, with classes held on Saturdays. Cost — in the range of €50–150 per month. For children who arrived at age 7–10 and can already read in Russian, these schools deliver real results — they preserve literacy and keep the language from slipping to a purely conversational level.
Children’s education in Barcelona for Russian-speaking families is often built on a combination model: an international or state school plus a Russian school on weekends. This works well if the child is psychologically ready for the double load.
Common mistakes
-
Renting in the centre without checking the school’s location. Most good international schools are in the north-west of the city or in the suburbs. Central Eixample is not a school district.
-
Counting on quick enrollment in a state school without a registered address. Without empadronamiento, a child will not be admitted to the nearest school — only to one with available places, often in a different neighbourhood.
-
Underestimating Catalan. Parents focus on Spanish, study it themselves and with their children, then discover the school operates entirely in Catalan. Language adaptation takes 6–18 months.
-
Delaying nursery applications. There are waiting lists for municipal daycare (ages 0–3). Submit paperwork well in advance — sometimes even before you relocate.
-
Treating Russian-language schooling as an optional extra. Children lose literacy quickly — especially spelling. If the family plans to return or stay connected to Russian-language education, even a 1–2 year gap is costly to recover from.
-
Not verifying an international school’s accreditation. Some schools present themselves as ’international’ but hold no IB or Cambridge accreditation. A diploma from such a school may not be accepted directly by European universities.
Bottom line: how to choose
For families with long-term integration plans and a modest budget — a state school plus a Russian school on weekends. For mobile expats and families with children over 8 who already have a school background — an international school with IB or the British curriculum, in the Sarrià or Sant Cugat area. For the youngest children — a municipal kindergarten (register well in advance) alongside a parallel Russian-language environment through community groups.
The most important decision — one that determines everything else — is to choose the school first, then the neighbourhood and housing.

Formats, fees, and enrolmentSchool in Barcelona starts with the neighbourhood
