Working with China in Barcelona
How to set up supplies from China for those living in Barcelona: where to find factories, how to vet a supplier, and how to avoid losing money on advance payments.
Working with China from Barcelona: where to start
Barcelona is the Mediterranean’s trade and fashion hub, home to a major port, making it a natural base for building import operations from China — clothing and textiles, accessories, electronics, and e-commerce goods. Three things are essential for any business doing this: a reliable supplier, quality control, and a clear customs process.

What matters specifically for Russian speakers from the CIS
The main pain point for importers from the CIS is how to pay a Chinese supplier when Russian cards and SWIFT no longer work:
- practical options — USDT, payment via a payment agent in China or Hong Kong, or a transfer from a third-country account (UAE, Kazakhstan);
- many factories on 1688 only accept domestic RMB payments — you need an agent to pay and oversee the shipment;
- for regular orders, it is more practical to route payments through an international transfer service or a trusted contact in China;
- factor commission and exchange rate costs (1–3%) into your cost price — these are the items most often overlooked.
Supplier search and vetting
- platforms: Alibaba and 1688 (China’s domestic marketplace, cheaper but no English), Global Sources, Canton Fair;
- verify the factory’s business licence, request samples, and arrange a video audit of the production facility;
- never pay 100% upfront — the standard is a 30% deposit / 70% after inspection;
- use Trade Assurance/escrow and an independent pre-shipment inspection (QC).

Logistics to Barcelona
- sea (FCL/LCL) — the main route, ~35–45 days, FOB/CIF terms (Incoterms);
- the Port of Barcelona is well connected to Catalonia’s textile and e-commerce warehouses;
- air freight — for urgent, lightweight consignments (5–10× more expensive);
- LCL is cost-effective for consolidated cargo; an FCL container makes more sense at volume.
Customs clearance and taxes in Spain
- an EORI number and customs clearance (despacho de aduanas) through a broker are required;
- on import: customs duty (arancel) by commodity code + import VAT 21%;
- Import VAT is then recoverable if you are registered for IVA (autónomo/SL).
Common mistakes and how to choose the right partner
- ordering without a sample and inspection is the primary source of defects;
- a ’suspiciously cheap’ supplier often turns out to be a middleman;
- calculate the landed cost including delivery, duty, and VAT — not just the unit price;
- it is safer to work through a trusted partner in China who will find the factory, verify it, and arrange delivery on a turnkey basis.
