Bookkeeping in Barcelona
How taxes and accounting work in Barcelona: when you need an accountant, how much ongoing support costs and how to optimise taxes legally.
When you need an accountant in Barcelona
In Barcelona, an accountant (asesor fiscal / gestor) is needed by Russian speakers in four situations: registering as autónomo, setting up a company, the Beckham regime for new arrivals, and declaring foreign assets. Catalonia is one of Spain’s highest-tax regions, so smart planning can save thousands of euros a year.
Price reference: bookkeeping for an autónomo — €50–120/mo, bookkeeping for a company (SL) — €150–350/mo, one-off tax consultation — €80–200. Initial consultation with SVOY accountants — free.

What matters specifically for Russian speakers from the CIS
- Income from clients in Russia/CIS. An accountant can legally structure your earnings (invoices, foreign currency, autónomo status) — and this doubles as proof of income for your residence permit and Digital Nomad Visa.
- How to bring money in. SWIFT from Russia is restricted — people use third countries and USDT, then legitimize funds through international transfers. An accountant can advise on how to record this correctly in your books.
- Assets in Russia — modelo 720. If you hold accounts or property in Russia worth more than €50,000, you must file a modelo 720 declaration (modelo 721 for crypto). This is a frequently overlooked obligation among Russian speakers, and the fines are real.
- CIS documents. To register as autónomo and claim deductions, you need properly certified documents — apostille and sworn translation, remotely.
Personal taxes and the Beckham regime
In Catalonia the progressive IRPF reaches ~50% (one of the highest rates in Spain), and a wealth tax (impuesto de patrimonio) applies — unlike in Madrid and Andalusia, where it has been set to zero.
The key tool for newcomers is the Beckham Regime (régimen de impatriados): a flat rate of 24% on income up to €600,000 for 6 years. It is available to those who recently became tax residents (including Digital Nomad Visa holders), but the application must be submitted within 6 months of registration — miss the deadline and the benefit is lost.

Autónomo: what you’ll actually pay
- the cuota de autónomos contribution ranges from ~€230 to €590/month depending on actual income (the new system introduced in 2023);
- tarifa plana — €80/month in the first year (relief for new autónomo registrants);
- quarterly: modelo 303 (IVA, usually 21%) and modelo 130 (IRPF advance payment);
- annual tax return — modelo 100 (Renta).
Company (SL) and foreign assets
SL makes sense with stable profits: corporate income tax 25% (15% for new companies in the first two years). An accountant handles bookkeeping, nominal VAT, and reporting.
Important for Russian speakers: if you hold assets abroad exceeding €50,000, you must file modelo 720 (accounts, real estate, shares) and, for crypto, modelo 721. Penalties were reduced following the 2022 EU court ruling, but the filing requirement remains in force.
How to choose an accountant without overpaying
- hire an asesor fiscal with hands-on experience working with expats and the Beckham regime;
- a Russian-speaking specialist will handle your status and deductions more precisely;
- calculate autónomo vs SL in advance — at the start, autónomo is almost always more advantageous;
- agree on the scope of services and fees before work begins.
