Russian-speaking expats in Yerevan
2026 Guide — Work, housing, banking, and community in Armenia
Life in Yerevan — through the eyes of those already here
Yerevan is chosen for the easiest possible entry: you can arrive on a Russian internal passport, almost everyone understands Russian, a sole trader registration takes one day, and bank cards work with international systems. The city has a strong IT community, cafés and co-working spaces around every corner, and the mountains and Lake Sevan nearby. It works equally well as a base and as a transit hub — Zvartnots airport has direct flights to Russia, Europe, and the Middle East.

Where fellow expats settle — and where it’s best to avoid
Where to live
- Kentron (Centre)Kaskad, Severni Prospekt, cafés and coworking spaces — all walkable. The priciest rents in the city, but also the most vibrant neighbourhood
- ArabkirA green neighborhood above the center: quieter and more affordable than Kentron, with many expat families and good schools
- Komitas / Kanaker-ZeytunResidential neighborhoods with new developments, reasonable prices, 10–15 minutes from the center
- DavtashenNew residential area: modern housing stock, parking, supermarkets — convenient if you have a car
Where it’s better not to live
- Nubarashen / outskirts of ErebuniFar from the centre, ageing housing stock, weak infrastructure — not the right choice for a first move

Housing and neighbourhoods
1-bedroom rental: $400–800/month depending on the area (Kentron is pricier). Search on list.am, Bars.am, and Telegram chats. A lease agreement is required for residential registration. Find Russian-speaking landlords without markups through the SVOY Yerevan chat.

Documents and status
Entry on a Russian internal passport for up to 180 days. Registration at place of residence, social security number (SSN), residence permit through employment/self-employment/study. Certificates, notary services, and translations — all available in Yerevan. We handle documents and legalization end-to-end through SVOY.

Banking and money
Ardshinbank, Ameriabank, ACBA, Inecobank — Visa/Mastercard cards work abroad. Opening an account as a non-resident is possible, though banks typically ask for supporting documentation (a lease or sole trader registration). Payments and transfers abroad are best handled through legal channels.

Work and business
Key sectors: IT (many relocated companies), services, trade, education. EAEU citizens do not need a work permit. A sole trader registration at a 5% turnover rate takes a day to set up — popular among freelancers. SVOY can help you register as a sole trader and sort out your legal status.

Healthcare
Healthcare is paid but affordable: GP appointment $15–30, many Russian-speaking doctors. Popular clinics include Nairi, Erebuni, and Wigmore. Not everyone gets insurance — costs are manageable. Contacts for trusted doctors are in the SVOY chat.

Schools and children
There are state schools with Russian-language classes, Russian-language schools (at the embassy and the Slavyanskaya school), private and international schools (QSI, UWC Dilijan nearby). Kindergartens: $100–300/month. SVOY can help you prepare the enrollment documents.

Transport and cars
Metro (1 line), buses, and minibuses — fares are very affordable. GG and Yandex Go taxis are cheap. Russian licenses are valid. The city is compact, but summers are hot — many people rent a car. Car search and rental — through SVOY Auto.

Transfers and parcels
Daily direct flights to Moscow and cities across Russia mean parcels move fast. Find trusted fellow travelers through the SVOY Yerevan chat; documents and small items go via community couriers.

Safety and SOS
Emergency services: 911 (unified). A Russian-speaking lawyer, doctor and assistance in a difficult situation — via the SVOY chat and the SVOY Lawyer service. Don’t face a problem abroad on your own.

Questions about life in Yerevan
Is a visa required to enter Armenia?
+
Russian citizens do not need a visa — entry is on a Russian internal passport, with stays of up to 180 days per year. Beyond that, registration and a residence permit based on employment, sole proprietorship, or study are required; SVOY can help you establish the right basis.
Do Russian cards work, and what is the situation with banks?
+
Mir cards are accepted in limited places; the main route is to open an account at an Armenian bank (Ardshinbank, Ameriabank, etc.) and get a Visa or Mastercard that works worldwide. Non-residents will need supporting documentation: a lease, sole trader registration, or employment.
Is Yerevan expensive to live in?
+
Less expensive than Moscow for food, taxis, and services, but rents in the centre have risen since 2022: a one-bedroom in Kentron runs $600–800. Arabkir and Davtashen are noticeably cheaper. A comfortable budget for one person starts at $1,000–1,200/month including rent.
