How it works in Spain
The NIE is issued by the foreign nationals police; the empadronamiento (local registration) — the district city hall (ayuntamiento), and a digital signature (certificado digital), without which half of all applications can only be submitted in person — FNMT.
What we need from you to get started
- Passport and the address where you will be registered
- Lease agreement or landlord’s consent — for empadronamiento
- Russian or other documents requiring legalisation — in original
Where things most often go wrong
- —The landlord is not willing to provide a document for registration — without it, the permit won’t be issued neither the NIE card, nor health insurance, nor a school place
- —Documents legalized for one country but needed in Spain: apostille country of issue and a sworn translation are required here
- —A digital signature is obtained at the last moment, when an appointment is already needed
