How it works in Hong Kong
Traffic is left-hand. Licences from a number of countries can be exchanged for local ones without exam; everyone else must take it. Car ownership is expensive here because of registration fees and parking, and public transport covers almost every task.
What we need from you to get started
- National driving licence and HKID
- Proof that the licence is valid and was not issued for tourists
- Determining whether you need a car at all
Where things most often go wrong
- —Expected a licence exchange without an exam, but the country isn’t on the list
- —Bought a car without factoring in fees and parking — those often cost more than the car itself
- —Forgot about left-hand traffic when renting a car for the first few days
Fees, processing times, and institutional requirements change several times per year, which is why they are not listed here: we verify and quote them as of the date of submission.
