Working with China in New York
How to set up supplies from China for those living in New York: where to find factories, how to vet a supplier, and how to avoid losing money on advance payments.
Working with China from New York: where to start
New York is the largest consumer market in the US and a major port (NY/NJ). However, importing from China to the US comes with one feature absent in Europe: high Section 301 tariffs. You need a supplier, quality control, and customs clearance.

What matters specifically for Russian speakers from the CIS
- Paying the supplier. Paying China from a US LLC account is straightforward, but opening that account is difficult for a Russian national; common solutions include USDT, a payment agent in China or Hong Kong, and international wire transfers;
- US banking compliance is strict regarding funds from Russia — keep a transparent paper trail;
- factor commission and exchange rate costs (1–3%) into your cost price.
Section 301 tariffs — the key nuance for the US
Many Chinese goods exported to the US are subject to additional Section 301 tariffs (often +25% or more) on top of the standard rate. This dramatically changes the cost price — calculate it BEFORE placing an order using the product’s HTS code.

Supplier search and vetting
- platforms: Alibaba, 1688 (domestic, cheaper), Global Sources, Canton Fair;
- verify the business licence, request samples, and arrange a video audit;
- payment 30/70, never 100% upfront; Trade Assurance and pre-shipment inspection.
Logistics and customs clearance
- sea via Port of New York/New Jersey, ~30–40 days (East Coast);
- a customs broker, customs bond, and payment of duty + Section 301 are required;
- air freight via JFK — for urgent shipments.
Common mistakes and how to choose the right partner
- overlooked Section 301 — entire margin gone;
- ordering without a sample and QC leads to defects;
- calculate the full landed cost including duties;
- it is safer to work through a turnkey partner in China.
