Schools and children in Los Angeles
Children and schools in Los Angeles: what options are available to Russian-speaking families, how much it costs and how to apply.
The education system in Los Angeles: what to know before you move
Choosing a school in Los Angeles is one of the first decisions that shapes the neighbourhood you live in, the family budget, and your children’s social circle for years to come. The city is vast: more than 4 million people, dozens of municipalities, and dramatically different school standards between neighbouring blocks. For Russian-speaking families, there is an additional question — how to preserve the language and maintain academic grounding during the transition period.

LAUSD public schools: how the system works
LAUSD (Los Angeles Unified School District) — the second-largest school district in the US, serving more than 600,000 students. Enrollment in a public school is tied to your residential address: a child is automatically assigned to the school within their attendance zone.
School quality within LAUSD varies enormously. The GreatSchools rating site scores schools from 1 to 10 — the difference between a school in Bel Air (8–9/10) and one in South LA (2–3/10) is real and tangible.
An alternative within the free system — Magnet Schools. These are specialized tracks (STEM, arts, dual language) open to the entire district through a competitive selection process. Applications are submitted via the LAUSD portal each year in December–January for the following school year. Competition is fierce, but it is a real way to get into a strong school outside your own zone.
Another tool to be aware of is intradistrict and interdistrict transfers. If your preferred school has available spots, a transfer is possible — but not guaranteed.
Private schools and Russian-language options
Private education in Los Angeles spans a wide range: from small religious schools at $8,000–12,000 per year to prestigious academic institutions such as Harvard-Westlake or Crossroads School, where fees reach $45,000–55,000 per year. Most mid-tier private schools cost $18,000–30,000 per year.
For families for whom their children’s education in Los Angeles with Russian language preservation matters, there are several specific options:
- Russian Saturday schools in West Hollywood operate as a supplement to mainstream schooling, typically on Saturdays. Curriculum: Russian language, literature, history, and math following Russian standards. Cost — around $200–400 per month.
- Jewish day schools with a Russian-speaking student body — part of the Russian-speaking community has traditionally gravitated toward schools such as Valley Beth Shalom or Harkham Hillel Hebrew Academy.
- Homeschool + Russian school — a popular combination among digital nomads and entrepreneurs: an accredited state online program (via LAUSD Virtual Academy or private providers) paired with in-person Russian-language classes.
Kindergarten in Los Angeles
Kindergarten (preschool/daycare) in Los Angeles is a significant expense in its own right. State Pre-K programmes exist but have limited capacity and are geared toward low-income families (the Head Start programme). A private preschool in a good neighbourhood costs $1,500–3,500 per month for full-time care. Russian-language groups do exist — look through local Facebook groups and Telegram channels for the West Hollywood / Brentwood / Sherman Oaks community.

Comparing school education options
| Option | Best for | Annual cost | Key note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public LAUSD (strong district) | Budget-conscious families who have moved into a good district | Free | Must live within the required attendance zone |
| Magnet School LAUSD | Motivated children with a competitive academic profile | Free | Competitive selection, long waiting list |
| Private mid-range | Families wanting consistent quality without a top-tier price tag | $18,000–30,000 | No university guarantees |
| Top-tier private | Families with the budget and a long-term Ivy League plan | $45,000–55,000 | Competitive admissions, donations expected |
| Russian Saturday school | For anyone wishing to preserve language and culture | $2,400–5,000 | Supplementary only, not a replacement |
| Homeschool + online | Digital nomads, flexible schedules, bilingual curriculum | $3,000–10,000 | Requires significant parental involvement |
Russian schools in Los Angeles: what actually works
Russian schools in Los Angeles are primarily a Saturday format. Historically, the main venues have been concentrated in West Hollywood, where the Russian-speaking community has been established since the 1970s. Today, some classes have moved to Woodland Hills, Encino, and Santa Monica.
Insider tip: Saturday schools in LA are about more than studying. They provide a community for children who would otherwise grow up in an entirely English-speaking environment. Many families choose a particular school not for its curriculum but for the ’chemistry’ — whether parents and children feel they’ve found their people there. It’s worth attending an open day in person before enrolling.
Second nuance: unlike New York or Miami, Los Angeles has no single large Russian-language day school with a full academic day in Russian. Bilingual academic education here is assembled from separate pieces.
Common mistakes
- Choosing a neighbourhood before studying the school map. A two-block difference can mean falling into a different attendance zone with a fundamentally different school rating. Start with GreatSchools and the LAUSD map — then look for a rental.
- Waiting until after you move to apply to Magnet. Deadlines fall in December–January, and waiting lists stretch for years. Apply in advance while still abroad, provided you have an SSN and address.
- Assuming a private school automatically guarantees quality. Many private schools in LA trade on brand name and location rather than actual academic results. Ask for college placement stats for the past 3 years.
- Ignoring the hidden costs of a public school. LAUSD is technically free, but the real tab — school supplies, extracurricular activities, field trips, uniforms, and fundraising — comes to $1 000–3 000 per year per child.
- Enrolling a child in Russian Saturday school and then not attending. Without regular attendance and support at home, the language won’t stick — especially for children under 10, who switch to English quickly.
- Underestimating the transition period. Children without English often end up in an ELL (English Language Learner) programme, which slows academic progress. Starting basic English 6–12 months before the move is well worth it.
Who should choose what
For families with a long-term horizon and budget — moving to a strong district (Brentwood, Hancock Park, Sherman Oaks) plus a Saturday Russian school. This is the formula that works for most people.
For those who arrived temporarily or want to stay flexible — homeschooling with an online curriculum plus a Russian school.
For those considering admission to top US universities — a private school with strong college counseling is worth looking at from grades 8–9 onward, not earlier: in lower grades the advantage is minimal while the costs are at their highest.
