Working with China in Istanbul
How to set up supplies from China for those living in Istanbul: where to find factories, how to vet a supplier, and how to avoid losing money on advance payments.
Working with China from Istanbul: where to start
Istanbul is a bridge between Asia and Europe and a major trading hub. Turkey is doubly convenient for CIS businesses: it is a place from which to pay Chinese suppliers and re-export goods to Russia. Supplier sourcing, quality control, and logistics all in one place.

What matters specifically for Russian speakers from the CIS
Turkey as a working bridge for paying in China when Russian cards are not accepted:
- a Turkish bank account/card and USDT are the primary ways to pay suppliers; a payment agent in China or Hong Kong is also an option;
- international transfers — for regular purchasing;
- Turkey is a convenient hub for re-exporting goods to Russia and the CIS;
- factor commission and exchange rate costs (1–3%) into your cost price.
Supplier search and vetting
- platforms: Alibaba, 1688 (China’s domestic, cheaper), Global Sources, Canton Fair;
- verify the factory’s business licence, request samples, and arrange a video audit;
- payment on a 30% / 70% basis, never 100% upfront; Trade Assurance and pre-shipment inspection.

Logistics
- sea via the ports of Mersin and Ambarlı (Istanbul), ~25–35 days from China;
- **rail via the Middle Corridor (China–Kazakhstan–Caspian–Turkey) — an alternative to sea freight;
- air freight — for urgent lightweight consignments.
Customs and taxes
- imports are cleared through Turkish customs; on entry — KDV (VAT) 20% plus duty based on the commodity code;
- special regimes and warehouses exist for re-export to Russia.
Common mistakes and how to choose the right partner
- ordering without a sample and QC is the primary source of defects;
- a suspiciously cheap ’supplier’ often turns out to be a middleman;
- calculate the full landed cost including logistics and duties;
- it is safer to work through a partner in China who will source and vet the factory and arrange shipping or re-export on a turnkey basis.
