How it works in Spain
Licenses and vehicle registration are handled by the DGT. Exchange of a foreign license is possible t only with countries that have a mutual recognition agreement; with many post-Soviet it doesn’t exist, and licenses are obtained through exams. The car undergoes technical inspection ITV and requires insurance.

- Status or registration — they determine what is available to you at all
Where things most often go wrong
- —They drive on a foreign licence for six months, assuming that’s fine indefinitely
- —They buy a car before getting their NIE — and there’s no one to register it under
- —Didn’t check for fines and encumbrances from the previous owner before the transaction
