How it works in Spain
Schools are divided into public, semi-public (concertado), and private; enrollment in the first two goes through the regional education authority within the designated period, not at your convenience. Recognition of certificates and grades (homologación) — a separate procedure handled by the Ministry of Education.
What we need from you to get started
- Birth certificate and school diploma or transcripts with apostille
- Registered address — it determines which school your child will attend
- Child’s age and the grade you are enrolling in
Where things most often go wrong
- —Arrived in summer expecting a September start: the enrollment window for public schools are usually closed by this point
- —The diploma recognition process was started after submitting documents to the school rather than before
- —The school place is tied to the registration address, but the flat was found in a different area
Spain is not Turkey or the UAE: a private school is not the only a fast entry option, but the state route requires hitting the application window.
