How it works in Mexico
Driver’s licences are issued by the state, not the country: rules and requirements vary in Quintana Roo and Mexico City differ. Foreign licences may be used limited, whereas renting and insurance almost always require a local card.

- Determining whether you need to own a car or renting is enough
Where things most often go wrong
- —An international driving permit was accepted as a substitute for a local licence — this is a translation, not a driving licence
- —Rented a car without full local insurance: in an accident, the difference is on you
- —Bought a car registered in the previous owner’s name under a power of attorney — in Mexico this regularly ends with the loss of the car
